In today's (13/03/2023) Patch Notes,
The safes found in the Rogue Castle have had the cooldown period increased from 5 minutes to 10 minutes.

My question is, why?

I understand that the threat system has been removed, and balancing of everything in the Wilderness is required.

However, aside from the Volcano hitting you every 20 minutes or so, the Safes were unaffected by the threat level. So long as we took a Trail-be-gone, we could leave the castle and not be affected by the monsters that would usually appear after being there for so long.

As I have explained on multiple occasions on this forum, Thieving is a broken skill, and I feel that this update only makes the user experience worse.

If an increase in wait time is absolutely necessary based on data collected, then perhaps an increase from 5 to 7 minutes would be more fitting. 10 minutes is complete overkill, and risks making these difficult to reach safes dead content.

5 years too late, safecracking has always been OP with everything else not even coming close.
Hence my comment regarding Thieving being broken.

With this update, it is no longer AFK-able, pickpocket mechanics remain so clunky that it's not enjoyable, and alternative methods such as Flash Powder Factory are far too slow to be fairly competitive.

Jagex really need to investigate Thieving as soon as possible as I fear it has very little going for it right now.

"Active" safecracking (which already required players to teleport to other safes while the Wilderness safes were on cooldown) doesn't seem to be affected to much by this in my experience.

My route prior to the update was Rogues' Castle > Zemouregal's Fortress > back to Rogues' > Zanaris > Yanille > Repeat.

This does affect "AFK" Wilderness safes more noticeably however, as there is twice as much downtime. On my homeworld there are people who are still okay with waiting there however.

The only downside I have found with "active" safecracking is that it's only possible once you've completed the Wilderness tasks. For skillers, this is impossible.

Personally, I have found it more beneficial to stay at the Rogues Den and wait as the randomness of the obelisks is too much for me. I suppose now skillers will be forced to use this randomised mechanic.

For what it's worth, I feel like the nerf to Wilderness safes was a bit heavyhanded- and I don't know if it was balanced around PvP being enabled all the time, or altered when the Wilderness was changed last year before today - but since the change it was more dangerous to active safecrack due to the possibility of the Chaos Elemental to wonder east or encountering a spawn when traveling to the obelisk/gate. AFKing the safes generally only left players to contend with the volcano.

Downtime? Just because there is a longer cooldown solely to the safe cracking in the Rogue Castle doesn't mean there aren't other places to crack safes as well as gaining thieving xp.

I used a small cooldown window to do safecracking in Yanille as well as pickpocketing Rogue Captains. There is no downtime for me and really there isn't a big drop in xp/hr.

But it's a massive drop in XP/hr for skillers.

Given that this is one of the only feasible methods of training Thieving as a skiller, it's a massive hit.
