There is no meta for a totally brand new content like Woodcutter's Grove. It is the first ever content of this type, so absolutely no meta.

You have your choice to go for xp or rewards in all kinds of content. If you want better chance of bird's nest you chop other trees, regardless what level they are NOW too. No difference with Woodcutter's Grove.

But with current birds nests, you can find them all across the game, not just at Fort Forinthry. This allows you to hop from one Elder tree to the next in a cycle and by the time you get back to the first tree it has regrown. It's not an either or choice here, because you can just have it both ways. That's a significant difference, actually.

By having the nests be a completely new item that only shows up in the grove, coupled with the fact that there is only one elder tree in said grove, you get a situation where you are forced to chop other, less expensive, and lesser in experience gain, trees in the grove to keep hunting for the axe pieces.

If the nests can be found across Gielinor, woodcutters would get the extra satisfaction of killing three birds with one stone, building up some nice cash with a highly in demand tree that supplies a brand new plank, getting a consistent source of good xp, while continuing the spin the RNG wheel for the bird's nests that would eventually source their best in slot hatchet. That would be a true win-win-win.

Again, this is nothing new. We were only able to get Crystal Hatchet in Priffdinas in 2013. That's the meta then, why wasn't it an issue then and all of a sudden H I L D A found it a big new problem in 2023 RS3?

There are still a lot of other items we can only obtain from doing specific things in specific locations in RS3 and OSRS. So?

Interesting arguments.
What I am not seeing mentioned here is the main power of the hatchet to come...and what its capacity will be with Honed 6.
If we can get THAT LUCKY and roll Honed 6 (given a lot of people are just going to say F it and dismantle their item lvl 12 hatchet (troll face) and rock their gizmos.

But what about those who didn't do that and slotted their hatchet? The list goes on and on here, but lets face facts...if Honed 6 doesn't make a difference in our cutting speeds with this new hatchet, we need a more viable perk to utilize on our hatchets besides imp souled.

Rambling? Always.
Making sense? Not Always.

Getting a crystal hatchet doesn't involve RNG. You do your time in Priff (you know, like a prisoner, one could argue "HubScape" has been a problem since 2013.) and you get your harmonic dust, then you move on. You could potentially be stuck standing in the Woodcutting Grove for a very long time if you happen to be particularly unlucky.

I don't have a problem with stupidly unnecessary grinds though, Dilbert. I'm a RuneScape player.

What I do think we have, is a largely missed opportunity to have integrated efficient gameplay with RNG to provide an enjoyable second-screen experience that wouldn't frustrate players as much as having to actively hunt for the birds nests may players who care about playing efficiently. And for what appears to be no good reason at all other than Jagex playing the part of the single-streetlight town sheriff who pulls anyone passing through town over just to tell the driver "don't miss us."

Crystal Hatchet requires Harmonic Dusts, and all sources of them involve RNG, and don't tell us chopping Elder logs aren't heavily RNG related. Sometimes I got 1 or 2 logs from an Elder tree, sometimes I got 15.

Why do they want to dismantle their items when they can use an equipment separator?

You get dust pretty regularly by playing the harps. Even if the harps do have a chance the player doesn't play the instrument correctly, tuning the instrument regularly is going to result in a steady stream of dust. There's also no 5 to 15 minute delay between harp actions in any case, making it not comparable to waiting for a singular Elder tree to regrow.

Priffdinas, while certainly a part of the issue I have with the game feeling less willing to have the player explore over time, doesn't have content that actively encourages the player to engage with content inefficiently, at least not without some kind of equal payoff.

> The Agility Course has a whole-screen click-radius and a velocity bar that automatically sends the next action when filled.

> Harps, Ivy, Waterfall fishing reasonably eschew great xp drops for consistent afk experience that doesn't invasively force the player to wait for a quarter of an hour at a time.

> Prayer can be trained much more passively than ever before through the use of cleansing crystals.

None of those updates actively make any of those skills cumbersome to train if they did have a cost in efficiency. Woodcutting requires a genuine sacrifice, on two probability rolls. 1, that you roll a bird's nest, and 2, that said nest contains an axe piece.

This isn't going to feel good if you go particularly dry on the axe pieces, but you wouldn't feel the sting as much if you could still go after the best log in the game nonstop while doing it. You can't if there is only one tree affected.

Most content in all Runescape games have RNG dependencies. Woodcutting is RNG dependent too, and Elder trees are the most RNG dependent one. Elder trees are not good for xp and bird's nests rate, and you insist on choosing it, it is your personal problem. Don't tell us you feel good when you are dry on choppig elders and only get 5 to 10 logs per hour. This actually happened to me.

All Runescape games have certain degrees of diversities of content. RS3 is exceptionally good at that, so not all locations is just reskinned Lumbridge, not all mobs are reskinned cows, and not all tress are reskinned oaks. This is intended and work exceptionally well and make the game a standout from cookie cutter MMORPGs on their last leg.

The best thing about Woodcutter's Grove is it is just the foundations for a whole series of updates leading to not just a WC work but also remastering of other skills like fletching, firemaking and construction. That's what the RS3 community has asked for. They want more balance, diversities and choices, and that's what the RS3 team is giving them.

Did you not notice that the chopping speed of Elder trees will get buffed in this update too, as did the experience of pretty much every core tree? You simply can't speak for experience rates for content you haven't even played yourself yet that is due for change.

Also, anyone that needs a T3 command center in the future is going to need a large quantity of Elder Planks in the future, which means that there's a whole new demand for the log that wasn't there previously. Even if isn't the fastest log you can cut, it's due for a rise in price to make up for it.

Protoxx's video on the update does a great job of explaining that the winds may be changing for Elder trees.
"It would seem Jagex is aiming to make players choose which core tree to cut based on what resource it offers as opposed to what gives the best XP."

I'm sorry you didn't feel good chopping Elder trees. I did them for cape shards. They were relaxing, and I'm going to make a little extra coin on my logs for doing so.

As for finding bird's nests, that skillcape is going to see some more use to help with that.
