Ben and Ridley

Ridley just chuckled, but did not seem to care about anything. "He ain't gonna make me do 'im a favour." he mumbled.

"Not what I would've done... I have a feelin' he's here for a reason he ain't sharin'. I would've just been like, 'Yo, I challenge ya. I win, ya leave us alone. I lose, ya can come over and do whatever it was ya has ta do, and we won't do nothin' about it.' I'd bet he'd spill the beans." Ben said. Having not had the helmet on, he had no idea about whatever clues he had missed.

Annie listened to what everyone comments. She asked calmly," so what's the plan? Who is going to do this duel?" She knows they won't let her do it but there has to be something she can do to help. -Dances-

Bridgett

Bridgett caught Gareth’s gaze as he glanced about the room, particularly his lingering stares at Chloe and Talia. What was the story there, she thought idly, kicking herself for not having a look herself. It was easy to forget that even after the events that had transpired, she was in a room of strangers, many of whom she met just 15 minutes ago.

Gareth’s pointed comment about there being no lore struck a sore spot with Bridgett, who had been for all intents and purposes a military brat. She didn’t much like the idea of negotiating under the guise of a personal vendetta; she wasn’t so naive to believe laws solved everything, but they sure made situations like these simpler and much more impersonal. In her mind, laws seperated soldiers from killers.

Despite her misgivings towards the sentiment, she remained quiet until Gareth disconnected and placed the helmet on his knee.

I don’t see any other options. ” Bridgett replied, her arms crossed. The ‘favour’ obviously bothered her – one wouldn’t make that deal to just anyone, and several people here in this room might make such a verbal agreement lightly. Unfortunately, she suspected she and Gareth were not among them.

Negotiations - Discussion

Unless he had something to gain by telling you, it is very unlikely you’d get him to say much of anything.
” the Captain told Ben, sighing. He had looked unsurprised at the terms that Gareth had described, and offered the comment, “
He’ll mean what he says, at the least, but you still need to be cautious. What he might request down the line might not be extremely dangerous to you in terms of the request itself, but the consequences of the action might be much more serious. And if you decline to assist when he calls it in...well, that will be a whole other set of problems.

You’re not getting anything else, though. Bridgett is correct: you have no choice in this matter if you want to take this avenue.
” Talia spoke up. If she noticed the extended look in her direction or the involuntary step back, she made no mention of it. “
Still...if his demand is a favor, then it’s reasonable to assume that, as we figured, his objective is already complete. That’s assuming he’s not using it as a deception of some sort, but that’s not something I can really see him doing in this scenario. Am I wrong?

The question was directed at the Captain, who shook his head and said, “
Unfortunately not, at least not from my perspective. It would benefit us more if his objective was not complete, since then we might at least get some idea of what it is. I don’t think he would care if he told us what he wanted, though, because I find it more likely he would taunt us with that knowledge somehow. We have the disadvantageous position here, and he knows it. If there was really something he wanted from us, it’s likely he would come get it.

That means you lot have to answer Annie’s question and decide who’s fighting, as well as what the rest of you are going to do.
” Talia said as she turned back to face the group. “
I stand by my opinion that the Princess, Annie, and Chloe should remain here, and given the assessment now I believe Bridgett is likely the best combatant, but I will not attempt to force that onto any of you should you believe otherwise. It is your lives that are in the most danger here, after all.

I think it would be best if I remained behind as well.

Princess Alicia spoke up once Talia was finished, and despite the situation she was back to her royal bearing, or at least as much as could be accomplished when covered with mud and soaked to the skin. Her expression was one of at least mild confidence, but every so often the real look - worry - broke through momentarily. It was plain she knew what was at stake here, but also that she’d accepted the fact that she could do nothing at this point in time.

I...I want to go. I know I shouldn’t. but...I don’t just want to sit here. Not when I might actually be able to do something before you need me to fly. All I need is a weapon, and I’m not the worst shot.

Chloe’s voice sounded surprisingly calm as she wiped her eyes, but there was an undertone to her words: anger. It wasn’t surprising, but it was rather clear what her primary motivation was to want to go with them. Whether that was a good idea or not would remain to be seen, at least should they decide it was a good idea.

Annie replied in a calm voice," I understand you guys want me stay here to stay safe. But, I want to go because, I just can't stay here and do nothing. I need to do something to help. Please there has to be something I can do to help." -Dances-

Gareth Arenar

Should I tell them? Gareth wondered. Might as well. "His objective has already been completed, or so he thinks." Gareth told the room. He looked towards Alicia. "The Princess was never their main objective... in fact, they consider her expendable. No, their main priority..." He turned to face Chloe. "...was to kill you."

Feeling the need to explain his line of reasoning, Gareth continued speaking. "The helmet has data readings on each one of us." He stated matter-of-factly. "In fact, out of everyone in this room, Bridgett is the only one they are explicitly told not to kill. I could not see my own reading, but I would assume it is something similar."

Then he pointed to Ridley. "You are expendable to them, but only if necessary." He looked to the Captain. "They are to prevent you from entering combat, and engage you only if necessary. Everyone else in this room is expendable. In summary: aside from the Princess most of the people they are in any way reluctant to kill are those involved in either the Nalis aristocracy or military. Except for one."

Finally, he looked to Talia, crossing his arms and staring her directly in the eye. "Your reading only said: 'DO NOT ENGAGE', with everything capitalized. You are more than just a writer, and I think we deserve some answers."

Negotiations - Discussion

Chloe’s expression went from sad and angry to shocked, and she managed a “
What…?
” before Talia stepped in and commented, “
It was probably her whole family. It seems likely to me that they needed someone else to blame as the instigators, but found it much easier to blame them if there was nobody to give an opposing viewpoint. It didn’t help that their agency operates all over the continent, making it easy to come up with a story of some kind about them being hired by an opposing nation.

It seemed like she was going to comment on what he said after as well, but instead waited for him to continue. When he got to the database entry about her, however, Talia’s eyes got cold and dark, and she leaned back and stared at the ceiling for a moment in silence, taking several deep breaths before looking back down from it. As she did, the Captain went to say something, but Talia held up a hand and he stopped. Although she didn’t - and hadn’t at the start - met the glare at her, choosing not to lock eyes with the accuser, she didn’t face away. Her posture was not one of someone that felt threatened, nor of someone that was nervous or trying to hide something.

There’s one main reason why an entry for me says that, although I would like to preface this by saying that I am most definitely a writer. That is my chosen profession, and that is how I make my living.
” she told Gareth. The tone of her voice indicated that this wasn’t something she really wanted to be sharing, and she almost sounded a little sad to be doing so.

Taking a deep breath, she continued, “
Although I said there’s one reason, it’s a little complex. To begin, Harbinger is extremely wary of me, and I know this because he told me himself. While the actual quote was, ‘You’re the most terrifying student I’ve ever seen’ and it was said partially in jest, I was good enough at reading people that I could tell he meant more than he was trying to let on. The reason for it is that I was the top student in my class at the Royal Academy in the Nalis Capital City of Organis...or I would have been had I wanted to. I purposefully dropped my grades so I wouldn’t have to speak at the ceremonies. I am an excellent tactical analyst, and my ability to understand and utilize Crystallis Matrix theory is one of the best in the country. I assume at least some of you noticed the dual utilization I employed during the fight earlier, and any of you that understand matrix theory will understand how difficult it is to do that successfully.

Gareth in particular would know that what she was saying, should she be telling the truth, was true: very few people could use multiple combat matrices at the same time. Many people could alternate between using them, such as having multiple matrix units with different functions and alternating between them to achieve a large range of desired effects, but using two at once required a much greater mechanical skill than most people could possess. The reason for this was a major topic for debate among many researchers and research groups, but they did agree that, regardless of the reason, very few people could actually accomplish it.

I’m explaining this because I want you to understand why he actually cares.
” she told them. “
It’s important because, regardless of what my skillset is, combat with other humans is not something I want to be involved in or do well in. I can, and will, fight if threatened, as my life is too important to me to simply let it go, but if that does not happen I will generally not join the fight. There are a few possible exceptions...but if Harbinger is in charge of the database, or at least has input towards any of the entries, what is written there makes sense. He knows that I will not join a fight if I am not put in a position where I have no choice. In a situation like this, where your forces are a small contingent, involving someone that doesn't need to be involved is a bad tactical choice, particularly when the individual in question has any combat skill or experience.

That’s the only reason I can think of that would merit such an entry.
” she finished with a shrug. “
If you want the unrelated details of my service record, ask my commanding officer.

With the last words, she gestured towards the Captain, who simply nodded gravely, and she added the last sentence, “
Despite your thinking that every detail of my life needs to be laid bare to you, it's not a subject I really want to talk about.
