Gareth Arenar

"Even if you do have those skills, none of that is needed right now!" Came Gareth's exasperated retort as he finally snapped. His voice had raised only slightly, but he was now sitting up even straighter and the frustration was evident on his face. Bridgett herself would have never seen his temper so heated.

He had been shot at and put at risk, he fell thousands of feet through the sky, his ship had crashed, he trudged through rain and mud to reach this destination, had nearly stumbled into a battle, and now he was about to embark on a highly dangerous mission. The last thing he wanted to do was put up with some reckless child incapable of taking a simple hint.

"We have warmth. We have shelter. We have food for days. Hunting might be a possibility, but not for you - you have no weapons and the monsters will tear you to shreds. The place could be more secure, but there's nothing you can add to that. If we need work done, there are dozens of other able-bodied adults we could turn to before you. At this point you're only repeating yourself and interrupting a vital discussion. Quiet down or leave, and if you do leave, stay inside the ship or within sight of it."

He was practically leaning out of his chair now. At this point he didn't care what the others thought about his words. Sugarcoating clearly wasn't working, and if someone needed to look like the bad guy and say what needed to be said, it might as well be him. He slumped back into his chair, clearly stressed out by the day's events.
Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.

Bridgett

Unlike the rest of the room, Bridgett watched with a hint of amusement as the little girl Annie regaled the room with childhood delusions mixed in with a little Girl Guide wisdom. While the girl meant well by interrupting the fight, whether it was her age or her incoherent thoughts, she failed to provide a swaying argument. The Captain, The Woman named “Talia”, Gareth and Travis all dismissed the obstinate girl, but still she persisted.

Meanwhile, the conversation seemed to continue, with Bridgett contemplating the course of the conversation. Could anyone in this rowdy roster of boarding crew members fly an airship? It was unlikely; though she herself had been in pilothouses before, those didn’t really count since she had only ever touched the controls on fine days. Taking off in a storm of this magnitude would be suicidal, let alone landing. Even if they could land, the clearing was already occupied by the wreckage of one ship; would it be safe to land in these winds?

It was a situation she would like to avoid, if at all possible. A slower but safer idea would be to transfer the injured through stretchers – but could they do so within the time limit provided by the Princess? They could also try taking a member of the crew; though she doubted the Captain was the sort to let his crew walk blindly to their deaths when an utter stranger could take their place.

Before she could put her thoughts into words, Gareth pretty much voiced her thoughts – and a little more. Could the captain be trusted? Certainly not with such straightforward questions like that.

“Don’t be rude, Gareth” Bridgett growled, though her comment was drowned out by Annie’s smart alec response. Whether he was in a foul mood, or perhaps it was his bad day, Gareth exploded in a way she had never seen before.

“Captain” Bridgett said in a tranquil fury, “I’d like to request Gareth and Annie be excused. Both of them are wet, cold and exhausted, and have nothing further to add.”

The hopeless wisdom of the child went on undeterred, much to the chagrin of Gareth as it turned out. Not even the comments of both the Captain and Silvandros, the people most knowledgable about the situation, could stop her from insisting that they go and find supplies - not to mention repeating her thoughts that they should not search for the ship in this weather. It was as if she wasn't listening to a word any of them were saying while expecting them to listen to her ideas and follow them explicitly.

Actually... Yeah, that sounded like a kid to Travis.

To be honest he was feeling pretty irritated himself, keeping himself from exploding like Gareth did was a measure of his self-discipline. As a member of the Guild he had to deal with all sorts of people when he took on requests, many of which were utterly insufferable to be around, so a persistent (and annoying) child was something he'd dealt with before. Having said that... Yeah, he wasn't fond of kids.

" Look... " He began, raising his voice a few octaves to cut through the heat that was building in the room between certain people. Even Bridgett had a simmering anger hidden in her tone of voice when she asked for both Gareth and Annie to be excused. Not that Travis could strictly disagree with her on that front, but it was besides the point. " Tensions are high, folk are gettin' emotional, that ain't any surprise with things like they are. Take a sec here - breathe, cool your heads, whatever ya' need to do. Shoutin' ain't helpin' anyone. "

That was directed between Gareth and Annie primarily, though a flickered gaze to Bridgett meant it was intended for her as well even if she hadn't raised her tone. Setting that aside Travis looked at the Captain.

" Afraid I ain't gonna be any help with airships, that hasn't been somethin' I've picked up in my line of work, " He sighed, taking a moment's pause to consider what he should touch upon next. There was a lot to say, it was just figuring what order

to say it in that was the issue. There was something he wanted to ask the captain about, much like Gareth had done, although he wanted to ask something a bit more specific. But, first...

" Hey, Annie, " He looked back at the young girl, walking over to where she was and crouching slightly so that he was at her level. So far they'd all been talking down to her, maybe this approach would work out better. " You see where we're comin' from, yeah? He's a bit of a loudmouth sayin' it that way but mud-man over there has some good points. I'm sure you know how ta' do a buncha stuff, but after hearin' about the situation you're smart enough to see why those things ain't needed right now, ain't ya'? " Travis smiled at her but pressed on. " I guess your dad taught you those survival skills? Well, you know we've got warmth an' shelter already. There's plenty of rain so water ain't an issue, an' there's still enough supplies in the ship - plus after those monsters get butchered - ta' feed everyone for at least a week, so those huntin' skills ain't gonna be needed right now. "

" An' be honest with me, yeah? You know how ta' hunt, ya' say, but that's huntin' critters like rabbits - settin' snares and traps for 'em. Thing is, in a forest fulla monsters like this one, there ain't gonna be any rabbits or ordinary critters around - just more monsters. You already know just one of those four-legged monsters out there woulda killed you, they ain't any joke. I spent years trainin' ta' be able to fight and kill even small monsters like them. Those military guys who attacked the ship are a lot tougher, an' everyone in this room, 'cept you, knows how ta' fight. " He went quiet for a moment, letting that sink in. " Those things you know? They'll come in more use here at the ship, where people are hurt, scared and need help. You'll help out a lot more around here than ya' will out there. You're smart enough ta' understand that, yeah? "

Annie repiled trying to stay calm,”I do understand where we're you guys are coming from. I just think it’s not a good idea to leave when there is monsters might attack again the ones who can’t fight back that’s it. That’s true we do have Shelter, water, and enough food from the monsters. I know how to hunt by using snares, traps, and tracking.” She thought about everything that happened and know what he said was it’s true. Then she said,” I can do that. I am not a stupid 12-year-old. All I want to do is help and be able to defend the ones who can’t. Then please teach me.” She really like Travis because he respects her and was listening to her. -Dances-

Alright, so this approach was working more effectively - the kid was listening at least. Travis listened - albeit inwardly sighing at some of the same stuff he heard - and nodded along until she was finished speaking. He seemed to pause in thought for a moment, scratching his beard idly.

" I get that. Really, I do, " He replied honestly. After all, if he didn't want to help people who couldn't help themselves he wouldn't be a Guild member! Travis gestured down at the combat knife she must've scavenged from one of the fallen soldiers back on the airship, recognizing it as being the same type as the one he'd stolen from its owner before killing the bastard. That blade was probably on the other side of the forest now given he'd lost it before jumping. " Even got yourself a lil' blade. Thing is, a blade that size ain't really much of a weapon - more of a holdout, gets used for cuttin' ropes an' sh- stuff. "

" Like mud-man said only around a half dozen of folk are headin' out ta' find the ship, everyone else is stayin' here, an' they've got enough weapons between 'em to defend the injured from any straggling monsters. " He reached up and tapped the emblem over his heart, the stylized gauntlet still managing to shine despite the flicks of mud and gore. " This right here means I know what I'm talkin' about when it comes to Monsters, so trust me on that - you saw me an' Bridgett bring down the big guy, after all! " He laughed.

" Now, as for teachin'... Ya' already know I can't do that, don'tcha? I went an' said when you asked earlier, there ain't anythin' I can teach you in a day or two that'd help - an' we don't have that time anyway even if there was. See, if we don't get her- " Travis pointed across at Alicia. " Back to civilization in a lil' over a day, there could be another war on - an' that's somethin' I don't think any of us want. "

Annie said in a calm voice because she was being listen to,” Fine. When you come back with a ship can you start teaching me how to fight?” She thought for a few minutes asked,”What do you want me to do here? You know I can climb trees. Maybe we could build something in the trees for looks outs or something like that and build fires outside to keep the monsters.” She was shivering from the cold and wet. -Dances-

Ben and Ridley

Neither did much past while. Ridley did chuckle now and then at the girl’s attempted bossiness, but Ben simply did not care about anything.

“So, we done talkin’, or what? I’d rather get mah clothes dry in dem heaters and be off. If the only other airship might be goin’ away pretty soon, we better get a movin’. As I says, dem bad guys might’ve been attacked by beasts, too, and if so, we might be able to catch ‘em off-guard. The animals are scared of fire; as long as there’s a few goin’, they ain’t comin’ back, though the rainy weather’ll make it pretty hard to keep a decent fire going.” Ben said. “If there’s any oil, maybe soak some cloth in it, tie the oiled cloth on the end of a stick, make a dozen ready torches and keep 'em dry indoors. Better than nothing’ if guns fail. Though, animals tend not ta be huntin' during rain, I think."

Crash Site - Ship Interior: Bridge

I think I could fly one, but I’ve only flown ours before.

Chloe spoke up, her voice remaining a bit tentative as she did so. She didn’t sound incredibly confident in her abilities, but given that they didn’t know what the configuration of the attacker’s vessel was this was understandable. Airship configurations could be tricky, as any pilot knew, and although once that was figured out the basics were the same it could mean the difference between a smooth flight and the inability to take off.

At that point, the argument began to flare up. The Captain looked as though he was about to say something, but after a momentary glance over in Talia’s direction did not do so. It seemed that they both thought letting this run its course was best for the moment, and it seemed that they were correct in that reasoning. Although tensions ran very high momentarily between Annie, Gareth, and Bridgett, Travis was able to move in and diffuse quite a bit of the anger and irritation.

At some point in the conversation, Talia’s grip on her matrix tightened again, and the faint shimmer that it was being used appeared once more. As with before, when operating the screen, a faint breeze could be felt by most of the people in the room, but the one who would feel it most was Annie. The air around her seemed to warm, just slightly, but enough that it would remove most of the need for her to shiver and feel cold. The matrix ceased to glow after a few moments, but the air change persisted for a while longer.

I appreciate your suggestions, Annie, but I do not plan to do much outside of the ship.
” the Captain told her, smiling at the child. “
We just don’t have the time or energy to build much of anything, and the ship itself should protect us better than anything else. Believe me, if I need your help I will make sure to ask.

Now, although there’s other things to address, I believe it would be best to try and assure you I’m not your enemy.
” he told them, Gareth in particular. The way he spoke was calm and measured, although there was an undertone of annoyance to his voice. It was not as pronounced as when Bridgett had tried to accuse him of betraying his country earlier, but it was still there.

As of now, I am little more than the captain of a crashed vessel. If you’re asking about my background, I was in the Nalis military as an airship pilot during the war. I am aware of the identity of the enemy commander both because he visited the bridge during the attack and because it is someone that I am...acquainted with. His code name in the Nalis military files is Harbinger, and he is a talented mercenary with no particular country allegiances. He also happens to be man who was at the top of my military class, so I knew him personally at one point. What I can offer you about his personality and the tactics employed is knowledge both from my time in the military and from my personal knowledge of his personality and mannerisms.

He sighed, shaking his head as if wishing he didn’t have the knowledge that he just spouted, before continuing, “
If there’s any more on that, I’d like to request that you ask it now. If you want to know something that is not entirely relevant to putting together a plan for this, I would like to not interrupt the planning multiple times should it come up again.

Not that there’s any hard evidence to back any of it up.
” Talia interjected. The tone of her voice almost sounding like it was corresponding with an eye roll, although the fact that her eyes were closed made it impossible to tell. “
All you’ve got is his word here, so if you’re not going to believe it there’s not much point in you being here.
