Chapter 23: Dust and Ice

"Duck down, another sandstorm!"pointed Nate at a huge pile of sand rising up from a nearby sand dune. Nate and Zen ducked down as the sandstorm swirled past them. Nate and Zen were near the town of Nardah. With white desert robes and a basic staff for travelling, they had faced quite a bit of trouble for the last few days. The travelling magic carpets, levitating carpets used to travel around the desert were not functioning and hence travellers had to go through the harsh terrain of the desert.
There were many perils such as jackals, wolves, crocodiles near the River Elid, and Ugthankis which were highly-agressive camels. After few days of filling waterskins and slaughtering any obstacles, they could finally see Nardah in the horizon.
After the sandstorm went past them, the two of them got back up.
Noticing a small number of sandstone buildings, Zen beamed at the buildings.
"At last, we reached this town! Couldn't they have built this somewhere closer to the town of Pollnvineach?"
"Nardah is far older than Pollnvineach. It was rumoured to be built in the Third Age, the age of the God Wars." explained Nate.
"Whatever, lets just go and rest in some inn."grumbled Zen.
A few hours later, the two reached Nardah in the evening. Quickly taking two rooms in the inn of Nardah, the two of them rested. After a few attempts of getting some information, the two of them headed to the house of a man called Ali the Wise. He was learned in the lore of Gielenor too.
The two of them reached Ali's house. It was slightly different compared to the dusty, sandstone houses of Nardah. It was made out of some white stone and seemed new.
Nate knocked the door. A calm voice answered.
"Enter."
The two entered the house. It was pretty empty except for a bed, a table and a few chairs, a fireplace and a few bookshelves. A man sat on a chair. His hair was brown and greying and he did not have tan skin unlike the rest of the humans living in the desert.

He was wearing a white shirt and grey leggings. he had a brown belt with a strange red scimitar. Although he seemed human, his green eyes had something mysterious inside them.
"Hello. You seem to have travelled quite far to meet me, I pressume?"asked Ali.
"Erm..yes."said Zen. "We want to find the being called Akthanakos. Apparently, Enakhra the Mahjarrat has summoned the god Zamorak onto Gielenor so we need the help of some Mahjarrat."
"Aah yes, Zamorak has already done some damage. He has been calling his followers in the western half of the Wilderness. Many vampyres, werevolves and necromancers have gone to that place as there is an increasing amount of activity going near the Ice Plateau."said Ali.
"Regarding Akthanakos, it is believed that Enakhra trapped him in a temple to the north of Nardah many centuries ago. Legends state that only a warrior who can brave the horrors of the temple can rescue Akthanakos."
"How d'you know so much?"asked Nate.
"Well, I read a lot of books and have reliable sourches of information. Im suprised Zamorak didn't tell you he wasn't a Mahjarrat himself."said Ali, ignoring the gasps of Nate and Zen. "Anyways, if you want to explore the temple, get ready quickly. Those who managed to come out of the temple either could not or would not speak of the things they encountered."
"Alright, thanks for your help."said Zen, with a bow.
"That's not a problem lads, take this parchment with you. If you want to send me messages or talk to me, you can simply write messages here. I will recieve it in another piece of parchment and respond back."said Ali, handing a white-coloured piece of parchment.

Nate nodded without thanking Ali.
"M'name is Nate, my pal here is Zen."said Nate. Having a pressing question in his mind, Zen turned to Ali.
"I don't mean to sound rude, but how come you do not have tanned skin unlike the rest of the Kharidians?"
Zen thought he saw Ali look shifty for a moment, but Zen was sure he imagined it for Ali laughed immediately.
"Many people have asked that question, boy. I was born in Asgarnia, half a century ago. However, I was interested in the lore of the desert so I came here."
"Aah, okay."said Zen. "We'll be leaving now."
"Good luck with finding the Mahjarrat!"exclaimed Ali. "If you find any interesting lore, please do send them using the parchment."
"Of course."

A few minutes later, Zen and Nate were travelling north of Nardah. They were wearing desert robes. Zen had an Adamant Longsword and an Adamant Kiteshield while Nate had a strange red scimitar which he took out of his bank. Zen carried a hammer and a pickaxe while Nate carried a tinderbox and a hatchet. They carried this to remove obstacles.
Although the desert was far hotter than any other place Zen had visited before, the desert north of Nardah seemed slightly cold perhaps due to the fact that the River Elid had its origin here as a small stream, thought Zen. After two hours of travelling, Zen saw a triangle shapped structure in the horizon. It appeared slightly menacing for some reason.
Zen noticed there were lots of skeletons nearby. The skeletons seemed to have been the remains of adventurers for they had a few weapons like daggers and shortswords, some of which Zen and Nate took. As Nate took the a mithril dagger from the last skeleton, he noticed that the skeletons were all laid in a position which appeared to be the shape of the "w" alphabet rune. Taking a few steps back, Nate realized the skeletons were laid in the shape of the symbol of Zamorak. Although the skeletons semmed old, their weapons seemed to be untouched.

"Zen, come and have a look at this."said Nate.
"Yes?"
"The skeletons are placed in the shape of Zamorak's symbol."
"Zamorak's...?Oh!"exlaimed Zen with suprise. "Perhaps a band of adventurers tried to venture through the temple and got attacked by Enakhra or Zamorak?"
"Hmm..not really. It must be a few centuries old. They all have weapons ranging from bronze to mithril. Which means, they were probably quite weak and were sent here by force."
said Nate, rubbing his chin. "Anyways, lets move forward."
A few minutes later, the pair finally reached the temple. Zen realized that the chill was coming from the temple as though it was snowing inside.
"Suprising how its so cold in a temple placed in the middle of a barren desert."said Nate.
"Maybe Enakhra imprisoned Akthanakos here by freezing him?"said Zen.
"Aaah! You just reminded me that the Mahjarrat use a set of long-forgotten spells which were said to be popular in the Second Age. They used the Ancient Spells. They use Ice, Blood, Smoke and Shadow spells."explained Nate.
"So when Enakhra used a spell called Blood Barrage in the Waterfall Cavern..."began Zen.
"She used a spell from the Ancient Spellbook."said Nate raising his hand, silencing Zen. "Lets go inside."
The entrance of the table was slightly larger than the size of an average human. It had a few skulls nailed to the wall around it. On top of the entrance was a sign written in some unknown language.
As the two of them entered the temple, they felt an immediate change in the environment. It was much cooler than they expected, causing the two of them to wear their armour. The corridor of the temple was very big and had torches attached to the walls. When Zen looked up, he noticed that he could not see the roof of the temple. Zen began to take a step foward when Nate pushed him back.
"Wait!"whispered Nate. "There can be traps here."
Zen was about to argue but knew better. Nate was an assassin who was probably a master in detecting traps.

Chapter 24: Nate's Fate
Nate took out a small pebble from his bag. He threw it in front of the corridor. The pebble fell on a few spikes which, magically apepared. Nate telegrabbed the pebble and repeated the process. After throwing a few things, Nate found moving walls, hidden boulders and spikes on the walls. After those traps, there seemed to be spikes everywhere on the floor, preventing navigation. Satisfied by his findings, Nate jumped on the spot a few times, revealing a handle on the old, mouldy floor. Nate opened it, revealing a steel ladder.
"Let's go."
"Sure."
______________
A few minutes later, the two of them were in a dark cavern.
Although there was no torch in the cavern, a strange blue light seemed to appear from the other end.
"It may be the sea perhaps."thought Zen as he trudged along.
After thirty minutes of walking, the two of them finally reached the other end of the cave. There was a great bronze door with a frozen handle. Zen took out his adamant longsword and smashed the ice with the hilt. He opened it and saw a spectacular sight. There was a large icy field with many icicles and frosty stalgamites. There seemed to be a great block of ice in the middle of the area.

"Heavens above.."muttered Nate, his eyes unfocused.
The two of them stepped inside. Although it was like a great field of ice, it seemed to be an icy arena as there were stalgamites around the corner of the area. The two of them walked towards the block of ice. It seemed to contain someone in bronze-coloured robes. Just as Zen reached out to touch it a skeletal figure in red robes appeared.
The robes appeared to have a black trim. Zen knew the figure was female due to the shape of it's body. She had a skeletal head and skeletal hands. In one of her hands, there was a silver staff. It had golden trim and the symbol of Zamorak on top of it.
The skeletal-lady turned towards the two of them in suprise.
"Zen and Nate."smiled the lady, as skin appeared to form on her bones.

She turned into the horribly familiar figure of Enakhra.
Nate's eyes narrowed.
"How is it that you always happened to come in every place we tend to go to?" said Nate, taking out his dragon daggers.
"Do not underestimate the power of the Mahjarrats, Nate. Might I remind you that I can destroy you and your useless friend with a few simple spells?"sneered Enakhra. She raised her staff and struck it at the ground causing flames to appear on Nate. Nate fell down towards the icy flooring, yelling in pain.
"Nate!"yelled Zen, realising the power of Enakhra. He quickly smashed some ice and threw it at the burning Nate to no avail. A few seconds later, Nate fell back towards the ice block which started to unfreeze, the body fell out of the block. It was encovered in brown robes a head of a camel. Although it was unfrozen, the being was unconscious.
"How fitting. Nate's final act, unfreezing Akthanakos." laughed Enakhra, watching Nate burn. "Let me put him out of his misery."
Suddenly, Zen found that he was unable to move or speak but could only turn his eyes. He saw Enakhra go closer to Nate.
The staff in her hand disappeared. She raised her hands and yelled "Blood Barrage!"
Nate immediately stopepd burning. For a split second, Zen thought Nate would stop being tortured. Then, suddenly, a lot of blood appeared above Nate as lots of gashes appeared in his body. Nate then slumped to the floor, dead.
