And even if your beliefs are more science-oriented, our population has gone from what... thousands to billions? Chances are you're still distantly related to many of the people you meet.

I remember reading once that almost everyone in the world distantly related at least twice. O_o Don't ask me to quote the source though.

8% of men in what used to be the Mongol Empire are descended from Genghis Khan.

This is a good chunk of Asia we're talking about, China included. And since China alone has like a billion people, no exaggeration, that's a noticeable percentage of the world's population.

Well, after almost two hundred hours of gameplay, and nearly a thousand deaths, I finally beat Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the First Flame. Oddly enough, the hardest part of the game was the beginning, the first dozen hours or so, or that's how it felt. The first Pursuer boss killed me, quite literally, for three days straight, making him the hardest boss I ever had to defeat in a game. The last three bosses were not hard at all, but Sir Alonne was the second hardest boss to face. Damn, that giant samurai was tough as heck. The Fume Knight and those two dark ice tiger-things were also pretty tough.

I ended up leaving the throne because I didn't care about anything about Dark Souls 2. Just like Dark Souls 1, to me, nothing makes sense, everything is not worthy to be bothered about, and you just treat the game like a long-term challenge. So, my very slim female knight, despite being so skinny, can wear stone armour, wield a great sword in one hand, and roll around in all that constantly despite being a zombie about to fall apart.

I also gathered almost every set and weapon I could, and upgraded everything with at least large titanite, only to realise I'd never use those weapons XD But ya, it was a fun ride, even though I died in literally every PvP fight, and often got emotes (whatever they meant), it was quite fun nevertheless. There were quite a few things I missed as I discovered in the Dark Souls Wiki, so maybe I'll eventually try to get to those things, someday, maybe.

Dark Souls lore isn't just shoved in your face.

You may not know this, but the game is made by a Japanese company. When the creator of that company was a boy, he loved to read English fantasy books. Problem was that he couldn't speak English very well, so some parts were really obscure and he had to make things up for himself.

Anyways, the lore is there. It is hidden away in offhand dialogue and item descriptions, some parts left vague and open for speculation. There are numerous videos that provide insight on many things. Most of the bosses are actually tragic villains.

For example, Artorias from Dark Souls 1. He went to Oolacile to fight back the Abyss, but ended up losing the items that protected him from it. The last one he actually gave to his pet, Sif, making his last act to protect his companion. Then the Abyss corrupted him and he became a monster.

Or Pinwheel. A mother, a child, and a father merged together. Presumably working to reverse the curse to be s family again when you dropped through the roof and slaughtered it.

They also explain why lighting the First Flame/ascending to the throne is important.

I never knew that about Dark Souls. That's actually pretty interesting that it's all based around the creator's own perception of English literature despite a language barrier. That's probably why it isn't the same as most other fantasy games. Much of it didn't make too much sense to me either, but the enemies are pretty damned creative.

I'm at the point in my life where I look at my performance this semester and I'm pretty sure that if I'm ever to be successful in life, it will be from my attempt to perform a routine procedure, messing up spectacularly, and creating something amazing purely by accident.

Or, that will happen but then I'll be unable to reproduce the phenomenon...which also is quite likely. Maybe moreso considering my luck.

How's everyone doing today?

P.S. You know it's bad when the only clean cup to drink your morning coffee in is actually a beaker :|

Watch yourself when cleaning up around the lab.

*hem 2 back in HS, we were doing an experiment with 18 Molar Sulfuric Acid.
The eye dropped leaked, so a small puddle of it formed.
I forgot/didn't pay attn ... so as I cleaned up, my arm went thru this mustard colored gooey patch on the workbench.
About 10 seconds later, felt a burning sensation there.
It was already too late.
Wiped off chunk of it wth paper towel.
Spent the next 30 minutes running it under water.
STILL lost about 1x1, 1.5x1.5 inch patch of skin on my left arm (top layer of skin really).
Didn't need to go to the hospital, school nurse just game me a bandage to wrap around it. Not like there was much else we could do about it anyways.
(The class was right before I had lunch, so was weird having a few classmates check up on me as I kept running the arm under water.)
The scar isn't bad these days.
But spent the rest of the semester, whenever the teacher was making a comment about "lab safety" he looked in my direction.

I knew it was a Japanese company, but didn't know about all those other points. I don't recall the game giving specific info like that.

I did assume that the game was Kafkaesque on purpose, which made me not care about much, so after killing maybe a third of NPCs for no reason, and then killing Pate and the other guy when they were fighting each other in the spider cove, I just, well, literally didn't care about anything. The main weakness of Dark Souls, to me, was that all characters are robotic and usually talk without making any sense.

The combat is also pathetically done, it was much better in DS1. Apparently, you can't swing a sword more than a few times, but can roll about wildly. In Japanese games, are they fighting, or are they dancing?

Funny thing about Dark Souls 2, when I started, I kept wondering if you'd end up becoming a king, but I was like, ''Well I don't want anything'' and that's exactly what I thought about at the very end. It was pretty cool. Though I expected the castle with all the dragons flying around to be the last level (excluding DLCs), it kinda surprised me that the ending was halfway in the game.

How did Artorias lose those items that protected him? You can carry thousands of items yourself without losing any in any way!

Here's a cool science experiment: swallow about 200 grams of potassium, and wash it down with water! Epic story Eos, anyways.

edit: the above experiment may kill you as Van mentioned; the above was meant to be a joke.

I feel it necessary to point that Azi's "cool experiment" will maim and possibly kill you. I imagine you meant it as a joke Azi, but on the off chance that someone here doesn't know how potassium reacts with water and manages to get a hold of the materials, you should be careful what you say. There was an incident reported where at least 12 people were hospitalized (probably more unreported) after someone on an internet forum instructed them on how to create chlorine gas telling them it was a cool harmless experiment.

Bit like suggesting people should mix the cleaning power of ammonia with the whitening and disinfecting power of bleach?
or do a physics experiment of sticking your tongue on an electrical socket?

Might as well tell people to eat 100 sugary peeps (some halloween, easter, or christmas time candy) in 1 sitting
