That is true, but they had to come up with something to make you part of. Using that backstory format and giving you free reign to make up your own complete backstory is impossible, The Elder Scrolls on the other hand don't give you much details other than your being a prisoner about to be executed.

Well, considering that almost everyone on the road is a living target, it's safe to say our Bethesda characters are at least slightly sociopathic.

I actually play my characters with a code of values and honor. Thieves only steal from or harass the wealthy if they can, assassins only kill someone if they are under contract, mages or warriors don't kill anyone who isn't attacking them, unless they deserve it (Namira's cannibal cult.)

Of course, anyone who attacks first is fair game.

Or insane.

That's a given. Taking things up to eleven, I think the oblivion protagonist turned into the Skyrim Sheogorath in one of the oblivion dlc's, didn't they?

Then You and I are complete opposites as far as what we like to play. I prefer to play the ruthless and evil characters that attack everyone, hate, everyone, want to be rich, and so give no heed to age, gender or social status. It's quite fun, too.

So I'm currently reading a Dragon Age Wiki article on Tevinter, and am really hoping that Bioware makes a game there. So I can play as an arrogant, self-centered blood mage who views the rest of the world as savages.

Edit: I also stumbled across this:

"Dorian Pavus confirms that the Altus class takes bloodlines very seriously (he will tell a Trevelyan that they are distant cousins based on the genealogy he has memorized)."

The Fact that they are cousins makes a relationship with Dorian as a human kind of disgusting... but also kind of hot, in my opinion.

In all honesty though, the connection goes so far back that it doesn't even matter. I watched a video of the conversation and it is explained a bit better. Also take into consideration the fact during this time period it was socially acceptable for nobles to marry their cousins.

And before someone says that this is Thedas, not real life, in The Masked Empire Gaspard proposes to Celene and it says that them being cousins isn't that big a deal, disturbing as it may be in our own time. Dorian and The Inquisitor are so distant that had Dorian not done extensive research into his family tree he wouldn't have known. Heck, it's possible that the Trevelyan who married the Pavus were connected by marriage only and had no children, meaning there aren't any real genetic ties between them.

And if you believe in the Bible, we are all descended from the same two people, making us all very distant cousins. And even if your beliefs are more science-oriented, our population has gone from what... thousands to billions? Chances are you're still distantly related to many of the people you meet.
