that actually doing so could take several decades.

Sounds like the job for a stubborn individual. I suppose I need to figure out just how much she's mastered, though.

Oh, and how do merfolk go about teaching magic? Do they have their own magic academy or something, or do they send their mages to land to learn?

They don't really have an academy. If a Merfolk shows talent for magic, they will be handed over to an experienced Merfolk mage who will take them on as an apprentice.

In terms of what they actually learn, most Merfolk start off learning Generic spells like the humans, but then go on to specialize in either Hydromancy, Geomancy, or Tranquility (more specifically, healing). Having someone who only learns Generic spells is not unheard of, and there aren't any rules against it, but it's regarded as unusual. Aeromancy and Pyromancy are not taught at all, and neither is Forbidden Magic.

They are also far more rigid when it comes to what mages are expected to do. Hydromancers are expected to serve as battle mages, Geomancers are expected to serve as builders (the only way the Merfolk can build anything is with magic), and Tranquility mages are naturally expected to serve as healers.

For mages who focused on Generic magic, their role would be a bit more vague and it would depend more on which Generic spells they are exceptionally good at, but they would end up fulfilling a support role with either the military or the builders.

Support? Pfft, that's for people who don't understand what their magic can actually do.

In case it wasn't obvious, I'm just going to go for Generic mastery. Would an age of 65 be enough to satisfy you for that?

I mean... these are the same people who would have trained your character. Though I guess it's possible that she left because she felt Aquapolis's magical education was too narrow.

Yeah, that's fine.

She probably would have at least started there, if only because she's uncoordinated AF when it comes to physical shit and would have delayed going onto land for as long as possible, but since she's going for full mastery I doubt she'd have stayed down below the entire time. One can't learn everything in a single place, after all.

Oh, and another quick question. How difficult is it to learn alchemy specific to making something like an explosive? In addition to that, is duplicating an item through magic a possibility? I'm trying to figure out if she would need to make these things or buy them, and if she bought them if they could be multiplied, allowing her to buy only one and having a near-infinite stock.

So I'm thinking over a paladin of Eolus concept for Ashlands, Fish. Barriers and healing would be the obvious magic types he'd be trained in, alongside melee combat, but I must ask - would a form of searing light be a magic option? Or rather, using light not only in the form of making light in various ways, but to cause it to sear and harm foes? I am Inferi.

George,
Yeah, but it would only work on things like undead, demons, vampires, and other traditionally "dark" forces.

And I can assure you, we will enter situations where such a power might be useful.

Inferi,
For alchemy you just need to know the recipe and instructions. And have all the necessary ingredients/tools of course.

Duplication magic is not a thing, unfortunately.

The bio is acceoted, but first I just have one thing to say about the canteen.

An enchantment like that (theoretically capable of generating an unlimited amount of water) is not something that is possible with modern magic (in the past it was possible, however). So I'd like you to come up with a way to explain how she came across it - maybe it's an old heirloom, or she found it in a shipwreck?
