Actually, I see what she did there. Annie maybe a half elf, and an illegitimate one, but she looked human. Assuming the knight in question had a passion that could never be, a common trope in womans litterature, he probably just took the kid and never explained where he got her.

I mean, to be fair, swords and bows are a little excessive for mages - but, perhaps they could be a part of her magecraft? Personally, I think it would be a good idea for mages to learn some sort of martial art, especially if magic is taxing on the body. How else would you simulate fatuigue to a student?

As for the Black hand, a moot point now that it's gone , are you telling me that nobody is trying to co-opt the biggest mage expedition into the capitol in x years? You'd think mages poking around a caticlysm would be a bad idea.

I mean, there are bits to pick at, like a 5 foot girl carrying half the world on her back without somehow toppling over, but I don't think the bio deserves complete dismissal.

I think it's kinda funny that Annie (the character) is always very short. A girl who is literally 5'1" is ridiculously short, and rather difficult to take seriously in a medieval hack n' slash environment. Such a short person would not last more than a few seconds in a real medieval fight. For example, in historic fighting, if your weapon is even two inches longer than your opponent's, you already have quite an advantage.

Although Skallagrim made a vid about how strength is not as important in sword fighting (which is partly true), if you are, say, ten pounds heavier and ten percent stronger, you have a significant advantage. Since Annie is around a hundred pounds and five feet tall, such a person has no reason being in any fight, ever, at all, unless one's opponents are also tiny.

In honourable conventional fighting, that would be true. In pragmatic fighting, not everything is reach and muscle strength, of which your average female has already lost before the fight has already begun.

Where I live, it's not uncommon to think that a small terrier could rip the throat of a big pit bull. The Maori had similar beliefs, which I presume is why they squat so much - you aren't allowed to be taller than your leader durring the Haka, lest you get your head lopped off. I also presume it's the reason why Dwarves are the most likely to go into "berserker rages".

TL;DR: Short people are scary.

Here are main problems:
A) It completely spits in the face of the established world, and she clearly hasn't read what she was already told to read.
B) She only aged her character up by about four years, which isn't enough to justify the 2+ combat styles she added as well.
C) She's nineteen and apparently knows Combat Magic (hasn't even specified what element), despite leaving the Academy before she would have even made it to that point. No mention of Generic Magic.
D) Depending on when she left the Academy, that only leaves her anywhere between one to three years to re-learn all those skills.

Funny thing is, strength is actually more important to archery than it is to swordfighting.

It's only taxing if you run out of mana. It's more a drain on the mind than it is on the body.

I've addressed this before. The Ashlands are dangerous. Any spies you send aren't likely to return, and you have no way of remaining in contact with them to issue further orders, so it's just a waste of resources. If the Expedition does return, any competent spy organization should be able to figure out what they found.

This is like her third or fourth attempt. In each previous attempt I have offered advice and suggestions. There was always at least one detail she refused to change.

I mean, to be brutally honest, I've been in a few tousles and minor brawls with some different people. I weigh 245 and anyone under, let's say, 160? You can pretty much heft them around like a sack of potatoes with ease. Particularly if you have more muscle mass than fat, but bulk is bulk anyway.

Putting a 5'1 100 pound girl against even an underweight man in a physical fight of any kind, well, it's not gonna go in her favor unless she's got a weapon. It's like lining up a man of average weight against a 300 pound linebacker. The linebacker will scatter that dude like he's a bowling ball and the other guy is a pin.

Not that it's exactly smiled upon in our society for a man to strike or even confront a woman, but you take your average man and put him up against a somewhat trained female fighter, I'd give the guy the odds. Men are built for endurance, stamina, strength and combat. Now somebody like Ronda Rousey could kick all of our asses, probably at the same time. But she's trained for a really long ass time and I wouldn't doubt if it at some point she used HGH or testosterone to get to where she's at. Not that I blame her. It's really, really difficult for females to build that kind of muscle mass without some kind of supplementation.

West,
Ah, yes, a clever person can win with devious means against a bigger foe, I forgot about that completely. A good point as always. Actually, there is one way a woman can beat a man easy: attack the balls, then scrape the eyes!

Interesting remark about the Maori, regarding squatting, that’s a good point, too. I never thought of that. Ah, yes, Dwarves, who can forget them?

Short people can be full of the biggest surprises! There are some little guys who are tough as nails.

NotFishing,
Ha! Indeed, strength is more important in archery than in swordfighting! One reason why the Welsh and English were such good longbowmen, was because they are strong enough to shoot longbows with a draw weight of well over a hundred pounds.

About dagger vs sword,
Yup, swords wins almost always against much shorter weapons; you can even attack the dagger-wielder’s legs and he can’t do anything about it. Unless the dagger is used up-close suddenly, or in assassination, or possibly thrown, does the dagger-wielder have a chance.

Gunslinger,
Oh my, someone who weighs 240 against a 160 pounder? That’s totally mean! Indeed, you’d toss the fella like a sack of potatoes. Bulk and mass help a lot indeed. Oh my, can you imagine actually having to fight a three-hundred pound linebacker? XD I guess I’d have to kick his knees out or something. Indeed, exceptional technique and talent can overcome strength; Ronda Rousey is exceptional. Yeah, I bet she did use supplements like that, but yeah, who can blame her? Ladies’ bodies can’t produce as much testosterone as men, so it’s understandable. Good points as always, I like talking about these subjects.

She does mention she was trained to be a knight, which presumably means she was raised as a man (unless this world is very progressive for womans rights). This isn't unprecedented, as I'm pretty sure this was the case for a knight in several of Charlemagne’s legends (Bradamante/Bradamant).

Let's also not forget the order of the Hatchet, a group of woman who dressed as men and fought off an islamic invasion with whatever they had on hand. While not technically "knights", I'm fairly sure they were equivalent in rank.

I think Gunslinger does bring up a good point though; does this world have magical or alchemical steroids? I imagine that druids potion from Asterix could come in handy.

A small terrier doesn't play with a large Pitbull, they go directly for the throat. Seriously. Those things can be mean. O_o

The story of Bradamant is quite beautiful. A Christian chevaleresse, who falls in love with a Saracen (probably a Muslim man from Islamic Spain), they get separated many times on their adventures, and the Muslim converts to Christianity for his love, but the Saracen is rejected by her family anyways.

Yes, I think it was Spanish women who equipped themselves as knights and sallied out a castle, routing a Muslim army off on their own. Quite impressive. Joan of Arc was also known to have equipped as a knight, trained with other knights, and rallied French soldiers in the most dangerous sections of battlefields. Also survived being shot in the chest by a crossbow bolt, and then was basically betrayed by the Burgundians and burned at the stake. Still, she had quite the adventure for a seventeen-year-old. I consider her the greatest saint in all Christianity.

There is also medieval artwork showing armoured ladies, too.

Magical steroids? Now that's something!

Of small dogs,
Some small dog breeds are excellent fighters indeed! Dogs can be quite impressive. Some small dog breeds are good at killing rats, but I don't remember which ones, I think a kind of wiener dog.
