Of course. I'm not trying to argue that either side shouldn't be that way, or that it doesn't make sense. I'd say it even downplays the possession factor, since a mage possessed by a Pride demon is probably one of the scariest things on the planet.
All I'm saying is that, if you're trying to defeat a threat that's more dangerous than either side, someone like Knight-Commander Meredith makes the situation infinitely more complicated than anyone wants it to be.
Wasn't she going nuts from being exposed to too much lyrium?
Be a bit like someone that was taking too much lead or mercury
Y'know, I don't think we've ever had a bioware-esque thread on these forums. Y'know, one where the world gathered all its forces... and failed. Then it's up to the heroes to gather everyone that's left, find/build an ancient superweapon, and destroy the corruption once and for all.
I mean, I might be inspired to write it... but I'd probably lose inspiration for the plot within the week.
Y'know, I reckon Annie would love being a circle mage. I mean, she wouldn't be a spy or experimented on, but she would be "imprisoned" by the templars.

It wasn't just any old lyrium. It was Red Lyrium.
The Red is important, I think.

Within reason. I truely think the Red Lyrium tipped her off the edge.
Remember that Bartrand sold the Lyrium back in Act 2 - so it's been in her possession since before the Qunari uprising. Frankly, it's to her credit that she still has some semblance of sanity left.
We kinda almost had that scenario in Runescape.
Tuska, piggy goddess, muncher of worlds ... eh ... anima ... was en route to Runescape.
First week, players "lost" the daily matches.
Jagex then nerfed the scenario.
(in game explanation would be jagex devs set the bar too high for player participation and there weren't quite enough players on RS, or at least interested in the event, to "beat" Tuska each day. after the nerf, the players ran the table.)
I remember that event. The godless were a joke, but nobody liked Saradomin, Zamorak or Armadyl. Zarosians were stupid enough to believe empowering the godless god slayers helped further Zaros's goal, because the godless were (and still are) a joke faction.
Personally? I wish the event failed; having Tuska crash looked like fun.
... but, yeah. What I'm talking about isn't quite like that. Tuska wasn't a fabled blight or corruption, but rather a simple force of nature and instinct.

Meh. I think Tuska would have died on contact no matter what the players chose; I doubt they had contingency's that affected the immediate story. It just isn't cost effective.
