Honestly, Duncan recruited my murder elf, and we have several sources telling us Duncan was nowhere near as soft as we first make him out to be. He would do anything to stop the blights, so I doubt he would have stayed as a reasonable authority figure for long.

Considering how he handled the personal stories, I truely wonder how much effort he would have put into recruiting the elves, dwarves and redcliffe. I'm pretty sure we wouldn't see a golden ending.

That being said, durring The Darkspawn chronicles, Alistair does a pretty good job solo.

Have you read the Calling? He started his Warden career as a slightly immature kleptomaniac who came from the slums. Considering where he started, I would say he came a long way.

His best friend was Alistair's mom (you meet her in Inquisition), and the epilogue of that book ends with him promising to watch over the boy. He's basically the Obi-Wan Kenobi of the Dragon Age series.

No. No he doesn't. He recruits the Golems and the Werewolves. He does the Dark Ritual. Many of the Companions don't even end up in the party. Then he gets himself killed in the final fight.
Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.

The Circle and Templars are cool, but their leadership sucks massively besides maybe the first game.

Eh, you have 2 orders that are forced to work together for the scariest of reasons.
In game, I think they show you scenarios where someone gets possessed by a demon. Bad things happen when mages (the most easily taken over AND providing terrifying outlets for demons to operate thru) get possessed.

The Templars, magically resistant, are trained to specifically hunt and kill mages.
Not an ordained mage?
Not taking the lyrium to dull your mind/magic?
You look like you about to be corrupted?
OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!!!!

The Templars view it as a necessary evil. The wars, the darkspawn, the invasion by the Qunari, they can't just off the Mages because the Mages are a potent weapon.

You've now had generations of this enforced persecution that is justifiably in place.

Of course. I'm not trying to argue that either side shouldn't be that way, or that it doesn't make sense. I'd say it even downplays the possession factor, since a mage possessed by a Pride demon is probably one of the scariest things on the planet.

All I'm saying is that, if you're trying to defeat a threat that's more dangerous than either side, someone like Knight-Commander Meredith makes the situation infinitely more complicated than anyone wants it to be.
Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.
