First of all, it's Crystallis.

Secondly, it's not the Crystallis that lets you cast magic, it's the matrix. The Crystallis is what powers the matrix.

Thirdly, a matrix isn't something you just leave lying around. It'd be like leaving a fully loaded gun on the floor. Gareth had to specifically ask for one, after making it clear it was one of his two conditions for helping out.
