It depended on the situation. I found that the only parts I had trouble with on Insanity were the platform section in the Collector ship, when you first realize it's a trap, and the first Praetorian fight at whatever that colony is while you're trying to arm the guns.

FENRIS mechs were just annoying, and although they were definitely more deadly than the other two types because of the "run at you and knock you out of cover" tactic, I wouldn't say they were all that bad. Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

Play vanguard. Press "Biotic Charge" to win. ;) My problem generally comes from when I can't get to an enemy, so more sneak up from behind - so things like Husks and the Mecha doggies can be super annoying.

I like vanguards more in 3 than in 2. Infiltrator was my preferred ME2 class, while it switched to vanguard for 3.

I will answer this with what I believe to be a great degree of accuracy: no. They would be programmed to protect this area, and anyone that doesn't have some form of identification allowing them to be there is a target. It wouldn't matter if you're a prisoner, a soldier, or God. They'd still fire at you. Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

I think playing vanguard in ME2 is worth it, if only to fight that Asari in the shadow broker DLC Biotic Charge for Biotic Charge.

Honestly, two vanguards fighting is the coolest thing ever.

Yeah, it's a bit less anticlimactic when she goes to charge and I just cloak and shoot her in the face. I mean, it's her fault for just standing there against a sniper, but still.

It's definitely worth it, though, as I can attest since I probably played it through twice as one. I did so many playthroughs I can't remember how many times I was a vanguard or infiltrator (since those were the only two classes I actually played). Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.
