To be fair, Mass Effect is kind of a mess when it comes to mechanical trade tools. I mean, omni-tools and omni-gel seem to fix everything... yet Mass Effect 2 and 3 show us that they do have specialised tools for mechanics.
I mean, what's the point in data pads when everyone already weilds a portable computer on their hands?
Ha! Good points. I guess non-omnitools are cheaper or more secure. I also suppose handheld power tools are cheaper/stronger than omnitools.
Speaking of which, I always thought it'd be useful if an omnitool was a hyper-bright flashlight, as you'd be able to simply blind foes. It'd be a cheap, efficient way of debilitating enemies.

I dunno, wouldn't a flash grenade be more effective? That way you could get a concussive sound too, which is something you probably don't want emitting from your own omni-tool.

Yes, a flash bang would be, as it would also not reveal your location, but it's a one-off item. Speaking of which, I always wondered why you don't get grenades in Mass Effect 2 or 3. Throwing disc-spinning bombs was pretty fun and cool.
