I had a plan that would have easily one-upped Travis distraction, but alas, it would have been suicidal.
Also Travis himself was kind of in the way.
For real though, I have to question Travis's effectiveness at fighting large monsters when he mostly seems to carry knives.

Sheer strength and armour isn't going to let you live through getting smacked around by a big monster.
Speed, agility and light blades are the method you need. Death by a thousand cuts, striking at vitals with precise slices, or skilfully climbing atop the monster so you can drive a foot long blade straight into its brain. You underestimate knives and daggers, especially in the hands of a master.

Looking at how humans have managed to kill large animals in the past, long-ranged weapons and traps are the method you need. You wouldn't knife-fight a mammoth. You'd lure it into a pit or shoot arrows at it from afar until it's weak enough for you to finish it off with spears.
If a monster is really large, your blade might not even be long enough to reach their vitals (or it won't be deep enough to have any lasting impact.) Also, large monsters tend to have stronger muscles and bones, so it's even harder to stab them with such a tiny blade. You'll also have to abandon a knife for every stab - otherwise they can easily swing their arm around and hit you while you're pulling it out.
You're really overestimating them here. Knives and daggers are good for concealment, as a back-up weapon, or for shanking people in alleyways. Spears and poleaxes are good for when you need to strike your opponent without getting close enough for them to strike back.
Death by a thousand cuts requires you to actually live long enough to deliver a thousand cuts. Meanwhile it only takes one well-timed punch for the monster to turn you into paste. Dodging will only get you so far.

Anime characters tend come with super human strength as standard though. I mean if the monster is as large as a large mammal then a Longsword is unlikely to even break through its hide. Let alone a dagger.
Sorry guys, I'm going to put a hold on my posts for tonight. I ended up playing a rather traumatising game from steam thinking I was emotionally stable enough to handle the content, when it turns out I wasn't. Hell, I don't think anyone is.
I'll get back to posting again when I can successfully delete this game from my mind.
