The Master Chief has a habit of hitting the self-destruct, chiefly because he never has the winning fleet at his back.

So, his plan would probably look like...

A) Find a terminal to plug Cortana into.
B) Hold the Console until Cortana finishes analysis.
C) Plugs Cortana back into his head.
D) Voices in the Chief's head head tells him how to blow up whatever he's standing on.
E) Manual overload conveniently leaves the ship intact while exploding dramatically for 10-15 minutes.
F) Escape

Chief was ready to destroy an entire city in order to stop the Flood, and later stood by while Rtas 'Vadum glassed half of Africa. In that instance he did have the winning fleet at his back, and there weren't even any demons involved.

That's also assuming we have the time to do that. I'm going to go with the assumption that we don't mechanics-wise.

I don't see why we wouldn't. If both Gary and Rem work at it, the doors will immediately shut down next post. Assuming the doors are impenetrable, we can just keep activating everything else, and if not we can just cut straight to activating the satellite immediately afterwards.

Actually, if we do satellites first we could probably just tell everyone to disregard the command centre and run back to the ship while we find our own way out.

Lets face it, the Chief was heading TOWARD the ship with the express interest of overloading its core (at least, until they bought up Cortana. Hey, she's smart! She could help him blow it up!).

Well, yeah - Miranda ordered him to do it, even saying, and I quote: "We either lose the city or we lose the planet." He didn't know Cortana's message was on board.

Original message details are unavailable.
The computers could allow Gary and/or Rem to do the following, but if they both choose to do work on the same operation, it will occur immediately (next turn rather than two turns from now). The fate of their comrades lies in the balance...

That's why we don't. With a posting cycle for every option, and new enemies flooding out the entire time, we don't have the time to sit back and make sure we get everything done. That's not even mentioning that it'll take even more time for pretty much any of those that would have any effect to activate.

It's only inconvenient from a meta-perspective. In-universe, it seems perfectly viable. The doors will keep the necromorphs out, and they will be divided between fighting the mechs and the soldiers, so they won't just be able to wait outside the command room.

Only downside is that we would (probably) be sacrificing anyone who isn't us, although I imagine the other player characters would still find a way to escape. It sucks for the comrades, but it seems to be the most thorough way to deal with the infestation.

That seems just as meta as well, don'tcha think? They don't know they're PCs in someone's world.

My point is that, if locking everything down and taking the time to deal with it systematically means we'd be sacrificing the rest of our soldiers, that's just not an option.
