The Black Hand in Eragon were more or less based on the Serbian Black Hand - a secret arm of the military who ran assassinations under their own authority. Only, from what I gather, they weren't prosecuted and shot by the statehouse (under false pretences) like their IRL comparison; in the story they were either neatly disposed of, committed suicide or went to ground.
The Black hand is run directly by a father figure, who taught his underlings everything they know about magic and combat.
Does this sound about right?

So, what is their motive? What do they currently intend to gain? Wealth, Land, Liberation, World Peace? Or are they just doing it for the lolz? (a respectable, if not slightly chaotic evil alignment)
I ask because this is something I have trouble remembering with my characters.
I guess the easiest way to answer that would be to ask...
... Who do the Black Hand work for?
If you can imagine who the Black Hand's sponsors are, and what they want from the group, their motives (or, at least, rhetoric) should become as clear as day.
