The midday sun was hot on the necks of the small group of rebels as they passed through the potato fields south of Varrock. The two men of the bunch took no notice of the health of the plants, breaking and destroying them underneath their feet without a care; only Denir bothered to avoid trampling any more of them. They walked directly northward, returning to the city after having hid during the night from outraged guards.

"How do you s'pose we'll get back in?" Galtan asked, expressing a blank face.

"We obviously won't be able to just walk back in," Denir replied. "The border guards must've been informed about last night's incident by now."

"Yeah," Galtan agreed simply.

"Have you two seen Nic anywhere? Do you think he split apart from our group, or did he maybe get caught by the guards?" Denir asked, showing honest concern.

"He wasn't at the meeting last night," Malik told her, turning his head toward Denir to make eye contact. "I think he's trying to get himself out of our group."

"What!" Denir retorted in Nic's defense. "He missed one meeting! How can you say that? He's one of the best men we have!"

Galtan interjected with his opinion. "I've heard that Nic goes to the Jolly Boar."

Both Malik and Denir stopped and turned to Galtan, sending him nasty looks.

"What are you talking about, moron?" Malik spat back.

Galtan frowned nervously, his knees shaking slightly.

"You know," he began to explain in his trembling, anxious voice. "The bar outside of Varrock where all the guards and roughs hang out at in the evenings."

"That's a lie!" Denir shot Galtan down with before turning and walking northward again.

After a few minutes, they reached the southern, outer walls of Varrock. They had avoided the entrance gates and found a quiet, lonely place east of them.

Malik walked over to a nearby tree and, by reaching down into a fairly large hole in its side, brought out a bundle of rope with a steel grapple attached.

"You're prepared!" Denir commented as he returned to them over by the wall.

"I have all kinds of back-up plans in place if something were ever to go sour," Malik explained. Then he swirled the grapple above his head and launched it up to the top of the wall. The steel claws dropped onto the stones above them, clattering a little. Then, Malik tugged at the rope, trying to secure the grapple on a sturdy foundation. It fell into place between a large crack in the top of the stone, sounding loudly for them to hear. With it stuck firmly on top of the wall, Malik began to scale the stone, one step at a time. He carefully placed each foot after the other, making sure not to slip on a smooth surface but instead hold each foot's place in the rougher area between the stones. Within a few minutes, Malik stood up at the top.

"Come on up," he said as he tossed the rope back down to them. He placed his foot over the grapple's claw, making sure it was still in place, and then gave a glance down at Denir to let her know it was ready. She imitated him pretty well, only slipping once about halfway up. However, she caught herself in time to stay on the wall. After a moment or two more, she joined Malik on the top.

"Alright, Galtan, your turn," Malik called to him, throwing back the rope.

While Galtan attempted to do his best in mimicking the other two's movements, he feared what they might do to him. He thought that just as he was about to get to the top, they would kick over the grapple, sending him down onto his back tens of feet below. He gulped hard and worried even more the closer he got to the top.

When he approached the edge, he leaped at it without hesitation. His fingers clutched the stone tightly, digging his nails into its cracks. The momentum from the jump caused his knees to slam into the wall, though, which nearly toppled him back down. Hanging on for dear life, he fought ferociously to get up.

"Help! Please!" he whined as he struggled in desperation. The other two looked at him blankly, a little shocked, but Malik made a move and kneeled over by him.

"Take my hand," he said, offering it. "Carefully."

Galtan was hesitant to at first, but looking into Malik's eyes, he sensed that he would not do anything harmful to him at this moment in time. He was slow to grab Malik's hand, but once his fingers left the stone, he grasped it immediately.

At that moment, Galtan looked up into Malik's eyes, his worrying at a peak. He saw literally nothing in those eyes, a sense that caused shivers to roll through his spine. Malik had no doubt in his mind of whatever he was planning to do, whether it be save him or not. Galtan realized that his very life was completely at a whim of Malik's own decision.

Malik stood firmly, using leverage from his two feet and the help of Denir, who held his other hand from behind him. She pulled back on Malik's hand, and together they easily brought Galtan to safety on top of the wall.

Galtan sighed out in trembles, slightly sobbing, once he could stand again. His heart was racing, having fully expected to die. The other two smirked at his behavior, but said nothing as they turned and continued entering Varrock. Malik readjusted the placement of the grapple and then scaled back down the other side of the wall, into someone's backyard below. The other two followed, and then Malik hid the grappling-hook underneath some cabbage in the garden of the yard.

"Oh, Nic!" Denir called out, seeing him walking nearby as Malik was putting away the grapple. Nic was a bit surprised at the sight of them, but smiled and joined them.

"What a coincidence!" Malik remarked, looking Nic in the eyes. "We were just talking about you?"

"Oh, yeah? About how awesome Nic is?"

"Where were you last night, Nic? You seemed to have missed one of our most important meetings so far. Apparently the Guard is onto our old hideout," Malik informed him. "But you wouldn't know anything about this, obviously."

"Yeah," Nic replied, looking at Denir to avoid Malik's accusing eyes. However, she pretended to study the ground. "It's really dumb, actually. See, someone told me that the meeting was cancelled, the crazy guy."

"Who was it? We'll scold him for it."

"Well, I can't really remember right now," Nic laughed. "I've been meeting so many new people this week; it's hard to remember all of 'em."

"I'm sure you have, Nic."

Nic looked away from the ground that Denir stared at and looked back into Malik's eyes. They stole into him, breaking the wall that was his own two eyes and seeing something behind them that he didn't want him to see. Nic could only meet those eyes of malice for a brief second before averting his gaze again.

Galtan looked back and forth between Malik and Nic, sensing the hidden secrets in their voices. However, he quickly began to feel self-conscious and felt an absolute need to speak.

"Can I go, Malik?" he said, receiving the eyes onto him in response. "I need to get home."

"Yes. Go home," Malik told him. Then he added, while looking at Nic, "Don't forget that we have a mandatory meeting tomorrow at our other hideout. It's at sunset, as always, and don't be late."

Denir watched Malik eye the shamed Nic down, feeling helpless and sorry for him.

"It won't be cancelled, either," he added, which caught Nic's attention. He then turned and walked towards home, leaving the pair by themselves. Denir looked back at Nic once again, seeing his terrifying glare at Malik as he walked away. She frowned, full of worry, but didn't say a word to her angry friend.
