Several days later, King Roald received a visit from only one of the trackers he’d sent out to find Athos. He’d been running back to Varrock for days, in pain from the broken jaw he’d gotten from Athos. Still very dirty and covered in blood, the tracker could hardly stand still as he spoke with the king.

“Your Highness, I’m sorry. We were unable to stop Athos,” the tracker managed to say with some difficulty. “He went off to Port Sarim and boarded a ship, but I couldn’t find out where he was going.”

“Where’s Taran?”

“Taran, he’s dead, sir,* the tracker answered, a tear streaming down his blood-covered face. “Athos killed him; there was nothing I could do to help him.”

The king took a seat behind his desk and sighed, letting his head fall into his hands.

“Thank you, Narvel. You did all you could.”

The tracker nodded, eyes still wet, but added, “I‘m very sorry, sir.”

Roald watched Narvel turn to leave, then let his eyes fall to his desk when the door closed.

“Athos,” the king whispered, thinking out loud to himself. “Did you really mean to kill that man? Are you really turning your back on us?”

“I don’t know what to think anymore. I have no idea what you’re planning to do, Athos, and it worries me.”

In the afternoon, Denir walked through the eastern side of Varrock alone. She was out and about trying to find something to do when she passed by Varrock’s gym. Glancing into one of the open windows, she spotted Nic inside, punching away at one of the dummies. She sighed a little, but entered through the door and went over to talk to him.

“Nic,” Denir said softly, walking towards him. “You should come and be with me. We can do something together. You‘ve been training like this all week.”

“I’m busy,” he replied, not even looking away from the dummy. Her gaze fell to the floor, eyes sad. “Sorry, Denir.”

Nic did not immediately start to resume his training, and Denir did not leave. A moment of silence fell between them both, until Denir finally spoke up.

“Nic, I know you hate him. Malik, I mean. I saw it in your eyes,” she said, eyes still posted to the floor. However, Nic turned his head a little to look over at her, at which point their eyes met. “But you’ve got to forget about this, Nic. It’s going to take over your life.”

Nic turned away from the dummy, facing Denir now. His eyes scanned the floor again, unable to make eye contact with Denir. He spoke back to her in a low, quiet voice.

“Whenever I look at Malik, or think about Malik, or hear about Malik, I feel inadequate,” Nic admitted to her before finally raising his eyes to hers. “Malik is only human, I tell myself, but… I can’t force myself to believe it. There’s something about the way he talks, and the way he looks at me… just everything about him, and it ****** me off! There’s no amount of punching this stupid bag or running lap after lap around the city that can match the hate I have for him. I don’t think I can ever be satisfied until I can one day stand over his dead, bleeding body with the knowledge that I killed him, I alone took his life from him! Malik… the mortal human.”

“But,” Nic continued. “Every time I think about what that means - the huge gap between our abilities that I’ll have to close off first - I absolutely lose it.”

Denir gulped hard and looked at Nic, realizing just how serious his confession is. Her face tightened up, trying to hold back tears.

“I can’t hardly rest with thoughts like this running in my head,” Nic told Denir. “Somehow, someway, I have to kill that Malik myself. Only then will I be content.”

“Nic,” Denir began, struggling with her sobbing. “What’s happened to you? This isn’t like you at all!”

Nic returned her glance, but said nothing. He watched tears roll down Denir’s cheeks as she continued talking.

“The other day, when Malik fought with Galtan, I saw something in everyone’s eyes. It was terrible, almost as if everyone was brainwashed and didn't feel a thing about killing Galtan. Everyone’s eyes - even yours, Nic - they were all cold and mindless,” she said, shaking her head as she wiped tears from her eyes. “I don’t want you to be this way, Nic! We can run off together, escape the rebel group and live off the coast of Catherby!”

Denir sighed, letting our her deep, tense breath. Then, a trembling smile formed on her lips and she looked at Nic happily.

“Remember your dream? You told me the thing you wanted more than anything was to be able to fall asleep and wake up to the sound of the soft tides outside your house, then sit on the beaches with your feet in the wet sand from dawn ‘til dusk just fishing as the sun rose and fell above you. Nic, that was one of the most beautiful things you ever told me,” she told him. “Don’t you remember telling me all about that dream? Nic! I want you to see that dream, and I want to be with you in that dream! Let’s go off together and start living that life! Let’s forget about these stupid politics and this awful rebellion, okay Nic?!”

Denir fell to her knees. All of the held-back tears rushed from her eyes and she cried out with great sadness. Nic stood with his head leaned against the dummy bag, looking down at his feet, silent as she continued to cry beside him.

Eventually, in a very quiet voice, Nic said, “Sorry, Denir. Things are different now.*

Denir looked up at Nic with her water-blurred eyes, wiping them with the back of her arm. She swallowed hard again, and then nodded, without saying another word.
