It had not been a second over ten minutes before Darusta began to awaken. Garth pulled Darusta to his feet and covered the man’s mouth. He firmly placed his dagger under the man's chin.
“If you scream I will kill you. You will only talk when I ask you a question. Nod your head if you understand.” Darusta nodded his head in response.
“Now, what did you do with my money?” Garth asked.
“Garth, is that you?” Garth pressed his dagger even tighter against the man’s throat.
“That is not the question I asked you.”
“I do not know what money you are talking about, I swear,” Darusta pleaded.
“You are lying to me,” Garth replied. Darusta's skin popped as the tip of the dagger pierced through his neck. Blood seeped around the blade and trickled down both sides of his neck.
“I don’t know that money you are talking about,” he pleaded.
“It was several months ago. You and I went on a joint assassins’ job. We were to kill five Zamarokians who were speaking out against the Holy Church of Saradomin. You and I were both going to receive a very large sum of money for the job, half before and half after the mission was completed. I never got my half after the assassination,” Garth told Darusta.
“I did not either,” Darusta pleaded. "I lost contact with the employers.”
“I know when you are lying to me, Darusta,” Garth replied. The trickle of blood running down Darusta's neck was slowly getting much larger. He tried to yell out in pain but Garth covered his mouth.
“Okay. I am sorry. I'll pay you back. I swear! I just need to deal with the Kingpin first!”
“The Kingpin is here?” Garth asked in a worried voice.
"No, one the Kingpin's trustees is. I was going to meet with him and pay him the protection money. I will get you your money, just don't kill me!” Darusta pleaded in cowardice.
"That is very generous, but do you think I actually care about the money? No. You betrayed me, and no one double-crosses me and gets away with it."

“Please let me go! I won’t tell anyone what happened!”
You are going nowhere. No one backstabs me and gets away with it.” Garth grabbed Darutsa around the neck and dragged him back over to the sink. Darusta's screams turned into bubbles as Garth plunged the man’s head back under water. Darusta kicked and flailed his body but to no avail. Garth counted off two minutes, enough time to kill a person or at least cause severe brain damage through lack of oxygen. Garth pulled his head back out of the water. He was satisfied to see that Darusta had no pulse. Now he needed a place for the body.
Garth walked over to the trashcan and emptied its contents onto the floor. The trashcan was mostly filled with empty beer bottles, so he had to carefully place them onto the floor one by one. He picked up Darusta's body and set him into the trashcan. Halfway through putting the trash back into the trashcan there was a banging at the door.
“Hey, open up the door. I need to go!” Garth heard someone yell. “Open up or I will get the manager.”
Garth swore at this. The body was covered up, so the man certainly would not know of the murder. He quickly wiped the blood from the floor and strolled over to open the door.
“Sorry about that,” Garth replied to the young man dressed in overalls. “I did not know that I locked it.”
“Well it is about time. Why is there trash and water all over the floor?” the young man asked. Garth quickly put his arm around the man's neck and used his other to push into his temple, creating a sleeper hold. After thirty seconds the man was unconscious. Garth dragged the body up against the wall. If anyone found the man they would think he simply passed out or fell asleep.
Garth placed the trash back into the trashcan and scrubbed every inch of the crime scene. He had made a clean kill with no left over evidence, and just in time, too. Garth still had more 'friends' of his to visit.

Ever since the relations between the White Knights and Burthrope had become tense, a small White Knights' outpost had been constructed just outside the border to Burthrope. The outpost was nothing more than a small castle with a horse stable. It was not in any way built to withstand an attack from Burthrope. The post was simply there so the White Knights could keep a close watch for any unusual troop movement.
As Kargill and Roven looked around the room, they could tell that the White Knights here were not going to be of much help. The soldiers were all grunts, and were what Commander Lorad would call 'green behind the ears'.
Kargill and Roven were surprised to find that the border to Burthrope was actually poorly protected. There was a fence, but it had been crudely made out of mostly rotting wood. The fence was guarded by only a handful of poorly equipped guards.
Burthrope was a poor town. All of the roads were dirt, and the houses were mostly simple shacks made from the lumber of nearby trees. The only thing modern about this city was the palace. The concrete and steel castle was a magnificent example of modern architecture. All along the castle were rows and rows of well trained archers. Falador’s border was not even this well guarded. Burthrope’s king obviously did not care about the well being or economic state of his citizens as long as he was safe.
“Kargill, don’t move,” Roven said in a whisper.
“What is it?” Kargill replied. Roven shot him a dirty look.
“Keep your voice down. I just saw a hooded man in black robes move into one of those shacks."

Garth sneaked out of the pub and made his way through the market square. He was safe from the White Knights, and no longer had to hide and stick to the shadows. It felt good to finally be able to walk down the streets like a normal citizen.
Garth suddenly felt in his gut that something here was not right. He stopped and began to look around. Not far from him was a man about his size in black robes. The man’s robes were a lot thicker and darker then his, like they were a mage’s robes. This hooded man was mainly sticking to the shadows, and was hiding behind the crowds of people. Garth did not think that he was following him, but something was not right here.
He would have to keep his eyes on this hooded man, but he had an appointment with Arkeon. The rest of his poison had been used on Darusta, and the former apothecary’s apprentice would have plenty for Garth. Arkeon was one of the few people that Garth could actually trust, and the only reason was because Arkeon was blind. He was not really Garth’s friend, but he was as close to a friend that an assassin like Garth could have.

Garth opened the door to Arkeon’s shack. Arkeon was sitting on his chair making potions. He had a fair complexion and white messy hair; of course he was blind so he could not exactly comb it. But what really stood out was that Arkeon had no eyes, just eye sockets. His eyes had been badly damaged in the Battle of Asagarnia when the Black Knights had attacked Falador all those years ago. Unknown to either of them, it was the same battle which took Roven's parents.
“Hello Garth,” Arkeon said as he entered.
“How did you know it was me?” Garth asked the blind man.
“You are the only one I know that locks the door as he enters,” Arkeon replied with a smile. “Did you get your dagger back all right?”
“Yes I have my dagger back. I had to go through nine people to get it.”
“Wow, nine people in one night. That is close to your old record of eleven. But you did not come here to talk about casualties now did you?”
“No, I am currently in need of some poisons. I am having a ‘rat’ problem.” Arkeon laughed at their code word.
“Would you like to knock the rats unconscious, give them a slow and torturing death, or kill them quick and painlessly?”
“I would like all three,” Garth replied.
“Must have a lot of rats to kill,” Arkeon replied. “Can I ask you something? How many rats have you killed in your career?”
“In my entire career I have killed two-hundred and fifty, give or take twenty that I left badly injured.” Had Arkeon not lost his eyes they would have been wide open right now.
“You killed two-hundred and fifty? Wow.”
“I am an old man,” Garth replied with a laugh. “I have been in the business half my life, remember?”
“True. It is amazing you are in such good shape for a forty-one year old.”
“Forty-two, yesterday was my birthday.”

“Can you think of a better way to celebrate your birthday other than running for your life from the White Knights?” Arkeon laughed.
“I had no choice; I had to get my dagger back. Are you going to get me the poison?”
“Sure thing,” Arkeon replied. “Unfortunately I am lacking the ingredients. Go talk to Ross; he is a farmer at the southern end of Burthrope. Tell him that I sent you and he will give you all of the ingredients I need for the potions.”
“Ok,” replied Garth. “How does a blind man like you managed to brew potions so well anyway?”
“By my sense of smell,” Arkeon replied. Arkeon was grinning from ear to ear.
“I will be back soon,” Garth replied. As Garth left Arkeon’s shack he began to look around for any tails or followers. He knew he was safe in Burthrope, but it was an old habit. The hooded man in the mage robes from before was still there. The hooded man was leaning against a wall, pretending to read a newspaper. In front of him was a large warrior dressed in armor more expensive than the King of Burthrope's. The dark skinned man in dragonite armor stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the army of peasants. The man definitely looked to be a noble. Maybe he was a general or knew the royal family or something. The warrior was busy chatting with a member of the Black Guard. Most people knew the Black Guard was just there for show; they rarely ever did anything to help stop the ridiculously high crime rate in the city. Garth looked back at the hooded mage. The man clad in magic robes must have been tailing the noble.
"What an amateur assassin,” Garth muttered as he made his way to the southern edge of town.

Kargill put down his newspaper and began to follow Garth as he moved out of view.
“Hey Gill, are you there?” Roven asked him over his commsphere
“Yes, I am here. The suspect is moving south. I am going to follow him at a distance and try to cut him off.”
“Did he buy it?” Roven asked.
“Yes,” Kargill replied. “He definitely thought that I was tailing you. I don’t think he sees us a threat.” Kargill and Roven knew that the suspect seeing two well trained warriors would be an instant red light, so they had come up with their plan of Gill pretending to tail Roven.
“Good. If you run through the nearby fields you can get ahead of him. We will get him in a pincer movement, you from the front and me from the back.”

Garth was now at the southern edge of Burthrope. This part of the city was very rural, and Garth had no idea which farm belonged to Ross. The bad feeling in his gut had never completely left. Something was still wrong. He felt like he needed to get back into the city, back into the safety of the people and the guards. Getting the ingredients could wait a little while.
Garth was about to turn around when he saw a figure moving up the road. It was the hooded man in the mage robes from before.
“Stop right there!” Roven yelled. Garth turned around to see that the warrior in the dragon armor was behind him, and getting closer by the second. The hooded man had not been tailing the warrior; they had both been tailing him. How could he have fallen for such a simple trick?
“You are under arrest by the White Knights. Will you comply?” Roven asked. Garth laughed at this.
“I am in Burthrope, you White Knights can not touch me here,” Garth said with a smile.
“To hell I can’t,” yelled Kargill. He lowered his staff and fired a large ball of magical energy at Garth. He rolled to his right and barely managed to dodge the magical blast.
“If it is a fight you want, it is a fight you will get,” Garth muttered.
End of Chapter 5
