Chapter 3: Memories of Days' Past
Kargill was walking down the road from Taverly to Falador. It was a younger Kargill, clad in green a blue elven robes. In his right hand carried his staff, which he was using as a walking stick. The staff had been carved from the oldest tree in Tirannwn, and had a black crystal at the top of the staff. The black crystal was the same type that was used to make the magical barrier that protected Yanille from the ogres. It had been his inheritance, the only thing left over from his father’s death.
He had come from the western lands, and was completely exhausted from the taxing journey. His vision was a bit cloudy and he had trouble remember where he had came from and why.
A strong gust of wind blew, tugging on his elven robes and rustling the tree branches. The clouds in the sky were clearing and the sun’s rays began to break through. Off in the distance there were several dark figures. At first Kargill had no idea what the figures were, but as they got closer he could see they were men on horse back.
Normally seeing such a thing would cause a man to run, but Kargill continued on his journey without a change of pace. His eyes were quite good and he could tell that they were barbarians of some kind.

Stop right there traveler!” one of the barbarians yelled as they approached Kargill. There were at least twenty of them, all of them on horseback and with crude weapons in their hands.
“If you want to continue to travel of this road, then you must pay tribute to the Barbarian Village,” another said.
Kargill told the barbarian in elfish that he did not have any money.
“What is that?” rhe barbarian asked Kargill. “Did you just insult me?”
“I don’t have any money,” Kargill said in their own language.
“What a shame,” the barbarian replied. “Then I guess we are just going to have to take that staff of yours instead."
“If you attempt to touch this staff than it shall be the last thing you ever do.” The barbarians got a chuckle out of this.
“Teach this puny man a lesson Gunthor."
“This is your last chance human,” replied Gunthor as he dismounted from his horse and unsheathed his long, curvy blade.
“Actually, I am an elf,” replied Kargill. He unsheathed his black crystal sword and held it out towards Gunthor. In his right he held the crystal sword and in his left was his staff. “Your move,” Kargill said.

“Gunthor smash!" The barbarian yelled as he charged towards the elf. Kargill blocked the attack with his staff and then sidestepped the barbarian. He lashed out at Gunthor's exposed side with his crystal sword. As the barbarian yelled, Kargill let out a powerful uppercut and followed up with a kick to the ribs.
Gunthor began to walk backwards now, trying to create some distance from the elf. Kargill lowered his staff and shot three waves of light blue magical energy at the barbarian. The three blasts connected with the barbarian, each one ripping and tearing at his flesh. Gunthor dropped to one knee. He was now badly injured, not even able to stand. Kargill kept his staff lowered and another blast of magical energy began to form at the tip of his staff. This wave was much larger and much more powerful than the other three. Kargill shot the magical energy from the staff and it began pounding and tearing at Gunthor as the wave connected. The man who was once the chief of the barbarians was now a bloody mess on the ground.
Upon seeing their chief die, the other barbarians dismounted from the horses and began charging at Kargill. He began blasting the barbarians, but they quickly began to overwhelm him. As they got closer, Kargill lowered his staff and got in a defensive stance. He stabbed at a barbarian with his sword while blocking the axe of another. He felt pain shoot through his shoulder as one of the barbarians hit him with his mallet. Kargill fought valiantly, but was soon surrounded and overwhelmed. He stabbed and slashed at barbarians left and right, but whenever he injured one there was another barbarian to return the favor.
Kargill shot a magical wave at a nearby barbarian. He then charged at the same man with his sword, ready to finish it off. Before he could, another had pierced his side with a crudely made spear. Kargill could feel pain surge through his back, starting with his shoulder blades, as another delivered a fierce blow with his hammer.

Kargill received numerous kicks and punches from several barbarians as he fell to the ground. They had now made a circle around him. The stream of blows stopped as a barbarian whom was much larger than the rest entered the circle. He approached the bloody and banged up body of Kargill.
“I think I will be taking that staff now,” the large barbarian said in a booming voice. Kargill tightly gripped his staff as the barbarian said this. He would not die here today. His family name and legacy would live on. These barbarians would not take the only memory he had left of his family and his clan. The barbarians had no idea of the giant amount of magical energy pulsing from Kargill’s staff.

The legacy of Kargill’s clan would live on. Kargill shot up to his feet. He was filled with renewed power and energy, and his veins were literally pumping with magic. Kargill held his staff above his head and released all of the magical energy he had built up. A sphere of blue magical energy began to form around Kargill and his staff. The sphere was getting larger and larger by the second. The barbarians could do nothing but stare in awe at this sight.
The sphere continued to grow around Kargill until the magical energy was released. The sphere burst and sent magical energy in every direction. It cut through the ranks of barbarians like a knife through butter.
Kargill was instantly overcome by weakness and exhaustion. He felt incredibly drained from the massive magical attack. How he had managed to not only pull off such a magical attack but live from it astonished him. All around him were the bodies of the dead barbarians and their horses. Many of them were missing limbs or had been decapitated. The sight of the blood and all of the scattered body parts made him want to puke. He tried to walk but his feet landed in a splash. Kargill looked around to see that he was literally standing in a pool of crimson blood.
“Stop right there!” He heard someone yell. Kargill turned to see Commander Lorad. Of course, at this time he was still Colonel Lorad. Behind him were at least three dozen White Knights, all on the backs of their pure bred Al Kharidian horses.
“Lower your staff citizen,” Lorad told him. Kargill did as he was told. When he did finally set site on his staff he was astonished. The wood from the staff had almost completely eroded away. His staff had basically turned to compact dirt. The only thing left intact was the black crystal that was at the top. Kargill was overcome by sadness at the loss of his father’s staff.

“Did you do this to the barbarians all by yourself?” Lorad asked. Kargill nodded his head.
“Where are you from?” Lorad asked. Kargill did not reply.
“Where are you going to?” He asked again. Kargill began to reply in elfish, but remembered he was in the presence of humans.
“I don’t know.” Kargill replied. “I am just going… away.”
“Have you ever heard of the White Knights?” Colonel Lorad asked.
“No, I have not.”
“Then I think you better come with us. Quick, somebody go round this man up a horse!"

Kargill awoke as there was a large pounding on his door.
"Hey Gill, wake up! We have to go find that merchant soon," said Roven. Kargill opened his eyes. He had just had another flashback. Lately they had become more and more frequent. It seemed like he could not fall asleep any more without have to relive the horror of his past. He would have to see Wizard Traiborn about this. Maybe he knew something.
"Hey Gill! Are you there?” Roven asked with another pounding on the door.
“Yeah, I am here,” replied Kargill. He sat up to find his body and his bed sheets were covered in sweat. “Just give me a few minutes to get ready.” Kargill rose out of bed. He got to one knee and then muttered a quick prayer to Armadyl before he left to get ready. This would be a long day.
End of Chapter 3
