“Look.” she felt it was redundant for it to tell her that, she wasn’t able to miss the massive doorway fifty feet tall if she tried. She saw words in another language written on it, just alien symbols really. A school of Karamthulhus swam out from inside, and this made slightly more sense. By pure chance, she had teleported to where these things live and breed. A massive energy suddenly gripped her body, her head snapped back and all the air rushed out of her lungs. Out of the corner of her eyes, she noticed a massive moving shape, colorless without a solid form. She woke up on the beach, breathless, her clothes folded. She did*’t fold them when she entered the water.

“Fresh... water” the voice returned, the Karamthulhu Overlord was back in his bowl and waiting patiently. They entered the thick jungle, and she took notice of the lack of animals. Why? This island was like a paradise, but not. Beautiful and charming at first glance.. but void of life on the second. The sun itself wasn’t here, and the whole place had a thick air, and the feeling of being watched was constant on land. She heard shuffling in the bushes time to time, or in the trees. It should’ve been animals, but she just couldn’t make herself honestly believe that. What was here?

“Here.” A sheer rock face with a gentle waterfall stood in her path, the water collected into a small pool, and drained out through smaller crevices.

“So when you learn to speak like us?” She asked, as she entered the water. The pool only managed to cover her waist, a side effect of being so tall. She cupped the water in her hands to help wash off the salt, but was in no extreme hurry. She began to think she might be a little paranoid when she did*’t travel with other people, but now that she had relaxed a little, there was nothing to be scared of.

She bathed, and began to eat... and that’s when she saw it shuffle. It’s mind wasn’t all there, it was a little clumsy too, but regardless... it was keeping an eye on her. It was spotted, it realized she had seen it, it limped back behind a tree and assumed it was perfectly hidden. Another was hanging from a tree branch, perfectly hidden in a shadow, or so it believed. One tripped from it’s spot twenty feet up in a tree, and landed with a thud. The man should’ve been dead, a twenty foot drop that impaled him on a tree branch through the stomach on the way down, he just let out a low moan and retreated back into the jungle. “What the hell....?” she grabbed her bow and readied it to shoot, but wasn’t sure if she should, they weren’t exactly being harmful, just spying on her, and tripping over their own feet. Did they honestly think she was worth spying on? She knew she wasn’t what most men wanted in a woman. She wasn’t a beauty, so why was she being spied on? She released an arrow to see if it would get a reaction. It landed directly in front of the one in the tree shadow. Did*’t move at all, was he even breathing?

She aimed a little higher, and was surprised that the arrow buried itself in his leg. He did*’t move for almost ten seconds afterwards, and then he staggered back into the jungle.

“Leave.” echoed in her mind, the Overlord placed several runestones at her feet, and seemed to urge her away from the island. She noticed many figures shambling, stumbling, and very few sprinting through the jungle; she even noticed one man crawling across the ground. “Quick.” she scooped up the runes, made sure she had all her things, and teleported. Landing in the square of Falador in only a small top and a pair of underwear wasn’t exactly a fun place to be either, she wasn’t sure if this situation or the other was better for a few moments. She then simply pulled on her leather pants and continued on her way, ignoring the odd looks.

“What just happen?” she asked her familiar.

“Things.”

“Fair enough... what were they.”

“Not human.” and that was it, her conversation with him was over. She really liked the fact he did*’t use any words he did*’t have to. She was going to try and find a tiny island inhabited with berserk men in a book some where, but upon reflection realized islands like this may be more common than expected, but she would still try. She would have to visit the library in Varrock.

A single teleport later, and she was there. Squid loyally behind her. She reached the wall surrounding the palace, and was stopped. “No further with arms runes or pets ma’am.”

“May I leave them here?”

“I am not responsible for your pet, but I can watch your bag while you’re gone. What do you plan on doing?”

“I have one question for the librarian.”

“Alright, here you’ll need to wear this.” he handed her a pin to wear on her chest to show that she had permission to be inside the palace, but only to visit the library. Leaving her bag with the guard, the Overlord understood not to follow. “What the hell are you, anyway?” minutes later...

“Help! My leg!”

She found the palace to be lack luster compared to the palace in the mother country. It was trying too hard to be beautiful in a city that demanded strength and authority. The palace back home wasn’t so much a palace, as a fortress with a picture hung here and there. Towering, filled to the brim with elite and angry soldiers and a smart yet iron fisted king. It was as a society should be. Here they tried to paint a massive smiley face on their local plotting, scheming, tyrant of a ruler. Continuing through the halls, servants seemed to be constantly running, not walking around in a desperate hurry to complete whatever task they had been issued. She finally found a door with a sign reading “Library.” above it. Swinging it open, she startled the quiet man inside.

“May I-I help you?” he closed a book on monsterology. Slamming the door behind her she screeched a chair across the ground and sat down.

“I’m looking for a book that talks of small island, filled with odd angry men.” pushing his glasses into place, he began to think.

“That’s very vague. I’ve heard countless stories about small islands filled with savagely behaving people. How do these act, where do they exist?”

“Don’t know, I teleported to the island by chance.”

“How did you do that?” he said with a laugh.

“Spell designed for random teleportation. I did*’t make it.”

“Really, how interesting.” his eye glasses reflected light from a candle as he spoke “so tell me, what did the men look like, any kind of war paint?”

“Pain was alien to them.”

“So strong men... they did*’t hurt you did they?”

“Not strong, just painless. I shot one in the thigh, did*’t notice it. One more fell out of a tree, twenty foot drop, he simply stood and limped away.” Reldo listened very carefully, he loved the stories adventurers would tell him sometimes. Better than a lot of fiction he heard, but then again he couldn’t tell how many of them were lying or not anyway.

“And then what? What were you doing?”

“I located a fresh water pool to wash the salt off with, bathing... here I should start from beginning yes?”

“Oh yes, that’s a good idea.” she explained everything to him in as much detail as she could muster, from her deciding to adventure, to her last minute escape, and now she was waiting for an answer. She was a little concerned, since his smile and look of utmost interest and intrigue had slowly faded off into a frown, and slight terror.

“I don’t know what to tell you; you found an island that was thought to be a mere myth.” he opened a book up and flicked through the pages, only stopping to read certain bits. “It’s all here, the myth

that is. The myth takes place a very long time ago, before the Godwars of the Third Age, it states there was a tribe of men who worshiped a foreign and wicked god. The god blessed his worshipers and gave their island life and prosperity. And then he left, but promised to return, and that they should wait for him. When they told him they were mere mortals who could not wait that long, he granted them endless life... but being wicked as he was, he allowed them to die.”

“Right...”

“And then they re-animated as cursed corpses, doomed to wait forever for their master to return, to ‘return their skin and fruit’ as the legend states. It doesn’t explain how part of their city sunk into the ocean though, that was probably just an event that happened naturally. An earthquake? But my theory..

“So I encountered group of dead men walking waiting for a failure of a god to return?”

“Oh... yes I guess so. If you would like to put it that way, that is. But as I was saying, my theory is that a mage simply fooled those people simple minded people with his magic, and when he got bored but they wanted him to stay, he cursed the whole village and called it a blessing.”

“Very interesting, Reldo. But I must be going, I will return the book when I get a chance.”

“Oh, it hasn’t been touched since we put it on the shelves. No rush.” she smiled and thanked him one last time, before turning to leave.

“Let’s go, Overlord.” she said as she picked up her bag. "Lady, i’m afraid there’s a problem.” a young, fit looking guard began to tell her, as he stepped out in front of them.

“What?”

“Your creature assaulted a guard.”

“I wanted to take it with me.” she walked around him and began to leave.

“Look ma’am, just.. you can’t leave it not tied to something next time... okay?” she waved her hand in acknowledgment.

“What did you do?”

“He poked me. I poked him.”

“Fair is fair.” she removed a small flask of whiskey, and took a drink. Maybe she’d see if Lowe was home. Door locked, no one inside, oh well. She wasn’t sure what to do for the rest of the day, there was still an hour to kill before it was too dark to continue.

“Anastasia! Anastasia! Just the girl I wanted to see.”

“Dief, what a pleasant surprise.” she sighed, her voice thick with sarcasm.

“I love you too. Seen Lowe though? I ain’t seen him in like two days now.*

*Nope, I hear he is having mid life crisis, went off hunting and adventuring by himself.” she explained.

“Damn it, he’s supposed to be the guy who never has any mental problems I can talk to. Geez all the guys I hang out with are freaks besides him.”

“Hang out with different guys?*

*...That’s one option, yes. But...”

“But but but. Excuses boy!” she said laughing as she took another drink from her flask.

“Yo wait a second babe, that smells like whiskey!”

“It is?” she finished what was left”

"But we're in public?

“Yeah? Anyway Dief, I must be going. I have matters to attend to.”

“Aight...” he said as she walked away, and then teleported. No wonder Lowe liked her, geez what was with all the women he was meeting but couldn’t get with recently. First a knock out beauty, next a hard drinkin’ boozer who isn’t afraid to drink publicly. These were one-in-a-million-women here. “Aight, new plan,” he said to himself walking down the street “take steroids, get buff, get chicks.” he laughed out loud at his own joke, and continued his asking around for sights of Lowe.

The pair spent the night at home. Ko owned several books about marine life and the such, and with those plus the one she borrowed, she set out to learn as much as she could muster by herself. Reading, scanning really through the pile of books she found slight bits of information about the Karamthulhu creature here and there, but no full articles. Until finally, a small section describing them.

“Karamthulhu(s) are a mysterious creature that seem to lurk in the most uninhabited sections of the ocean. What little we know comes from native folklore, though oddly the universal tribal description of them is “Bad luck.”

“Lies.” he said as she read that section.

“Some have been spotted by fishermen to cut their nets through the use of serrated suction cups in order to free the fish for their own consumption. They have also been seen on land for short periods of time, for unknown reasons.”

“Waiting.”

“For what?” she marked her page, and fetched a bottle of vodka to help liven up the experience. He did*’t reply to the question.

“They are believed to be capable of weak spell casting by some, but the scientific world has dismissed this as rumor and legend.” he twirled a stream of water around the room.

“So science does not know everything.” she poured vodka into his bowl and kept reading.

“They are able of extreme deep sea diving, presumably to hunt. They live in caves and crevices, in packs or families of any where from two, through a hundred per group. They hunt together to bring down large prey.”

“Are you lonely?” she asked, swallowing a shot of vodka.

*Used to be” she poured more vodka into his bowl. No complaint no problem, right?

“They seem to use two extremes when encountering humans, swimming away, or attacking with fury. There has only been rare cases in which anything else happened.” and that was it, there was no more information to be found. It did*’t even list the locations where they had been found and studied.
