The crew had finally slipped into the rhythm of the karamthulhus, they moved slowly, it was most safe to keep your distance, they used spears and bows to keep them off the ship, though one did slip aboard every now and again, they did*’t last long. Standing the crow’s nest was Bentley, determined to make sure no accidents happened, armed with a signal flare if danger was sighted, and his telescope, he would assure the safety of his passengers, and crew. Most of the night was silent, the long reaching weapon ensured the safety of the sentries, and Bentley was growing bored. He peered through his spy glass and observed the ocean, they’d reach the islands by late afternoon tomorrow, he was sure. He prayed that the return trip would be easier.

He noticed something large swimming in the water, but the moon was more dim than the night before, he couldn’t make out any fine details. “Foreign object approaching the ship, from the stern!” he shouted down, several crew made their way to see what it was, two men leaned over the railing and carefully searched the water. A pair of screams ringed out, the two men were instantly pulled off the vessel by a mass of tentacles. a sharp ‘crack’ noise probably meant the men’* necks were snapped. A small crowd of defenders rushed in to see what the hell that was, and weren’t pleased with the response. A huge terrible mess of tentacles flung it’s self over the railing, landing on top of a man, crushing him under its extreme weight.

It leapt slightly and wrapped it’s flailing arms around an unlucky sailor, who had each of his limbs pulled off. A pirate slashed out and lopped a tentacle off, causing it to bleed a disgusting black blood, with only traces of red to be found Bentley released his warning flare, which let out a loud ‘bang’, and bright red light soared into the sky, grabbing the attention of the sentries, they rushed in, terrified, but determined to protect the vessel. The hunk of flesh ‘stood’ at about 6”5, with no real body or legs to speak of, it seemed to wiggle and writhe not unlike a snake, with one huge eye stalk sticking above the rest of the confusing and tangled appendages, it was like a super sized karamthulhu, but much darker In color, and with countless more tentacles.

The hulk smashed the sailor with an overhead thrash with his tentacles, the sailor pulled away, as another tried stabbing it’s eye with a spear, the stalk shifted at the last second, and it ripped the spear from the man’s grip, impaling him with it and tossing him overboard. It broke the spear over the head of another sailor. Bentley swung down from a rope and sprinted under the deck “Hang on boys! Hold it back!”, his loyal soldiers rushed forward and hacked at it’ trimming away at the jungle of writhing snake like tentacles. it made an odd angry sounding gurgle noise, picking up the broken shaft of the spear and smashing it across a man’s face, while strangling another man. Three arrows pierced into the tentacle that was squeezing the life out of the one pirate.

It dropped the man, who stumbled away gasping for air. Another arrow struck it’s eye stalk, but missed its actual eye, and it seemed unaffected by the attack. It lifted several barrels and flicked them towards the archers, the men managed to dodge, but it used its massive strength to leap over the heads of the melee fighters, and landing before the archers, they pulled their cutlass blades and swung furiously, chopping off several tentacles, but it seemingly had no effect on the beast, despite it bleeding all over the deck, like an oil spill. It crushed one of the men with its weight, the remaining sentries began fleeing below deck, there was no way they could win this fight.

As they ran to the ladders, Bentley flung himself up, wielding a hand cannon, the men dove to either side of him, leaving the oversized fish right in the line of sight of his cannon *Back to the depths of hell with you!” Bentley’s gravelly voice roared, as he pulled the trigger, sending the cannon shot ripping through the air, blasting the creature into a fine pink mist. Bits of tentacle rained from the sky, and the eye of the creature landed at Bentley’s feet. He grunted and crushed it under his foot. The loud cannon blast had woken quite a few people, but most ignored it, and fell back to sleep, not Ko, however.

He ran on deck, with a look of concern embed on his face, he almost looked ready to fight, regardless of the fact he had just been woken, and was only dressed in underwear. He glanced around, the smoke of the hand cannon slowly dissipated, along with the pink mist in the air, he looked at the pools of black dotted around the ship, and the corpses of dead sailors were hard to ignore as well. “Get back below deck* we have a mess to clean up.” Bentley informed Ko, wiping his face clean of the blood spatter. Ko, in the most polite voice he could muster asked his question.

“May I inquire what happened?” he patiently waited to be sent back to bed, but the Captain spoke.

“A horrible beast from the sea unleashed it’s rage against us, it just so happens technology put the beast of myth back in its place.” Bentley lifted the cannon up with a sly grin of satisfaction. Ko descended back below deck, and back to sleep. Bentley wasn’t really sure if this would hurt his popularity in sea travel, or perhaps increase it, he chuckled as he popped the cork out of a bottle of wine, and took a swig. “Bentley, the Captain with a Cannon.* He thought to himself with a giggle.

“Alright boys, swab the deck!” he ordered after several minutes of silence “First mate Gal, I want you to keep an eye on the deck, with this.” He said handing over the heavy hand cannon and ammo. It only took Bentley a few minutes to have the bodies taken care of, and the patrols running smoothly again, with his First Mate to make sure everything will run smooth while he slept.

As Gal walked along the edges of the boat, hand cannon loaded and ready to blast anything into bits, he noticed a glimmering, shining line of those blue odd creatures, “Are they migrating?” he wondered, “Or are we in for a massive assault…” morning came without any further attacks, but upon emerging onto the deck, the six instantly noticed something different, the sun was shining brightly, but there seemed to be a thick aura of gloom and despair surrounding the entire crew. They quickly noticed six caskets and Bentley standing before them with a battered black book in his hands, he was reciting a blessing over the six dead, and many of the crew had their heads bowed down, hats removed as some even tried to fight back tears.

*What happened?” Azura asked, she felt so sad, death was such a hard thing to deal with… “It couldn’t have been those cute karamthulhus… right?” she asked quietly.

“I am surprised none of you heard the cannon blast last night.” Ko began to speak from behind them “Bentley reduced something aboard the ship to a smoldering pile of tentacles with one of those hand cannons.” He told them, sharing the last bits of information he had on the subject.

“I wonder what the hell it was.” Aiden asked, pounding his fist into his other hand.

“Who knows, we could’ve totally destroyed it, though.” Caden said with a grin.

The seven watched in silence as they tossed the caskets overboard, one by one, Azura had a few tears run down her cheeks, but the others seemed jaded to the whole thing. It would only be a few more hours before they landed on the lunar isles, there would be hot springs to unwind in, huge monsters to engage in battle with, powerful tricks and spells to learn. There was something for everyone there, and the food was supposed to be good as well.

“So tell me, what be your hobbies?” Anastasia questioned Ko. He smiled.

“I like knife fighting, fishing, exercising, and drinking.” He pointed to a scar that ran from his ear lobe to his chin “I won a thousand coins in a fight, but I also won this scar.” Ana smiled and thought over the things he listed, she had never been in a knife fight for a prize before, it sounded worth trying. Drinking and fishing were definitely worth doing, and exercising was something she did often, but never for joy. She smiled “Sounds like you will enjoy Misthalian then, all those are common, even the knife fighting.” Ko leaned back on the railing and sighed, looks like things would be a lot of fun when he finally made it to this seemingly magical land.
