When the enemies crashed against the gates some of the archers left the walls to fire through it and into the enemies but as Robyk got ready to fire he saw the face of one of the enemies. A nasty gray-green color, the flesh looked to be rotting and his jaw was dislocated. One of his eyes looked as if it had burst, the dried goo that he had once looked through now adorned his cheek along with crusty old blood. The archers began to fear them and all of them were hesitant to continue fighting. One of the creatures looked Rob in the eye and screamed, reaching through the gate as if his arm could extend far enough to reach him, Rob froze solid.
"Fire! What are you all doing!" The king was shouting, then the archers began to fire off arrows again. Nearly every arrow hit but only one in ten made one of the creatures fall back. The monsters soon grew tired of fruitlessly parading themselves around the gate for the archers to fire at and began to draw their blades. Axes and hammers and swords were being swung violently at the gate, splintering parts of it, breaking others and doing nothing to some parts.
"Man the murder holes!" somebody yelled out and then the archers atop the walls began to tip the buckets in the shoots to pour burning pitch down onto the invading monsters, they did not seem to like the heat for they ceased in their efforts to break down the gate and began to scramble among themselves to get away from the burning sensation that they must have all been feeling. That made the men in the castle feel much more enthusiastic.
"Get more pitch up there!" Guyard yelled at the top of his lungs, his blade raised into the air as a way of showing who was shouting the order. Two men at arms ran into the castle and appeared a moment later with more pitch to fill the murder holes with. "Waste no time! Splash it through the gate!" Guyard ordered and pointed to the monsters who were still at their doorstep.
