×Chapter 25×
×Inferno×
The tattered building they found wasn’t much, there were holes in the walls that revealed the wooden beams underneath, the roof was filled with huge holes, the floor and walls were blackened. Vines grew all over the outside and crept in through window panes, twisting among the broken glass where there used to be windows. As far as Rachel could tell there had been a fire here, her knowledge of magical flames aiding her in determining that the fire had indeed been an arcane one. Considering that they were due west of Aubury’s Rune Shop it made sense that a fire could have broken out in the shop and moved to the house with the wind. It was also possible that the former occupants were unable to rebuild and so they left the building to be reclaimed by nature.
But, despite the many flaws of the decaying structure, they had a roof over their head. It was unfortunate that none of the inns in town had any vacancies. They had all agreed that tomorrow they could check again and hopefully someone would have departed Varrock, leaving their room for the taking.
The crack of thunder echoed through the city and lightning arced across the sky in brilliant bolts. The storm was getting closer now and it wouldn’t be long before it rained. Adam, Rachel, and John had laid out their sleeping mats on the ground. They all climbed on top and set their other things aside. All three of them were just about to doze off when the temperature plummeted and the first drops began to fall. It was a summer maelstrom, rain fell like a whole ocean had just been put in the sky. The corners of the house seemed to stay the driest and so everyone moved to their own separate corner, clutching themselves against the cold. The rain soothed them all into a deep sleep.

Adam was dreaming. He was standing in blackness. There was not a soul in sight. Suddenly a very unassuming man walked past Adam, completely oblivious to his presence. The man stopped mid step and turned his head to Adam, looking him dead in the eyes. Adam’s gaze was frozen on the man’s ring. A set of silver demon horns was set onto the band. Horror spread through Adam’s body, but he couldn’t move. The man smiled at him, jagged teeth jutted out from his gums, looking very much like demon teeth. The man’s mouth closed, Adam still staring at him like he was the only thing he ever wanted to see. The man turned and continued walking. Another man came into Adam’s peripheral vision, and began walking past his field of view, then another person, and another. Soon a massive crowd was flowing past Adam’s gaze, going this way and that. All of them were wearing the ring with the demon horns on it.
A man appeared in front of Adam. His eyes were a piercing green, a perfect match to Adam’s. His jawbone was sharp and his cheekbones were very angular. He had a thick brow and a long braided beard of brown hair. Forehead length brown hair was matted down onto his head. His lips were thin and taut. Pure hatred was written across his face as he stared down into Adam’s eyes. Adam opened his mouth to speak, “Father!?”
The figure remained standing there, staring at Adam like he was the worst plague. His lips moved but Adam’s brain failed to register the words. Then they hit him like an arrow when they were repeated slowly and deliberately by the figure. Adam watched as his father repeated the word over and over, “Monster.”

Adam leaped at his dream father, screaming in rage. This scream was reflected in real life as Rachel and John simultaneously woke up at hearing his screams. Adam woke up and sat upright, hate searing his skull like an unnatural flame. Adam was stunned by the power of his dreams, but not enough to not notice a raindrop sizzle and turn into vapor as soon as it touched his skin. Adam looked at his exposed forearms, and was horrified to find that they had turned an intense crimson red. John noticed this and grabbed Rachel who had just picked up her things. John ran and grabbed his sword before grabbing Rachel’s hand and yelling, “Run!”
The two of them bolted for the door as fast as they could, sprinting out onto the streets as it continued to rain. John turned to Rachel, “Did you get Adam’s backpack?”
“No.*
*Well can you?”
“Yeah, I’m on it,” Rachel reached for her rune pouch and pulled out some law and air runes, they turned to dust as she focused on them and Adam’s backpack, still in the building. The backpack suddenly appeared in her hand and she set it down. Rachel’s heart leapt when the building burst into flames.
Adam was inside, numb to the world. His skin was radiating intense heat and his hands had grown menacing claws. His arms and legs became as big as tree trunks and his torso widened until it was as big as the side of a small house. Adam burst through the roof of the dilapidated, and now burning, house. Rachel looked on as the head of a grotesque demon broke through the roof of the house, each raindrop sizzling as it hit the skin of the beast. Crooked horns jutted from the head and the eyes glowed bright blue. Teeth jutted like daggers from the creature’s mouth.

Adam screamed in pain as he lost control of his body. Fire began to swirl in the air around him until he was nothing but a black blur in the flames to Rachel and John. The air shimmered as it heated up around him. The power inside of him overflowed like a boiling cauldron. Fire shot out in every direction and the house was annihilated from existence as the heat vaporized it. Over the roar of the flames Adam could be heard crying out as he unleashed his rage, lighting up Varrock like the midday sun for a moment and then fizzling out.
Adam lay in the ashes that used to be their shelter dazed, looking around at the destruction he had caused. Neighboring roofs had caught fire, even though the rain was taking care of that. The house they had been in had ceased to exist.
Adam stood up, his whole body shaking in terror. He walked to where the door had used to be and saw John, holding Rachel by the shoulders. Rachel was looking at Adam, fear and confusion evident on her face. Adam ran off into the sheets of rain, until he disappeared into the fog.

Elly, could you tell me what you thought of my posts on the previous page? Where I said what I thought was wrong? Was it good? Bad? Horrible beyond all reason?
Way to go with the previous chapter. :D Really liked it!

×Chapter 26×
×Revelation×
“Adam! Wait!” Rachel cried as Adam sprinted off into the rain, dejection tearing through his insides like a cruel sickness.
Adam ran until he couldn’t see the remains of the house through the fog. He did*’* want to see Rachel. She would think he was a monster, some kind of freak. She probably hated him for not telling her. A fence appeared through the haze and Adam spotted a crate next to the wooden fence and he collapsed down onto it, the will to move gone from his legs. He buried his head in his hands and sat in solitude as the rain drenched him to the skin.
Rachel walked around the corner of Aubury’s Rune Shop and continued straight in the direction Adam had run until she spotted a fence piercing through the mist. Next to the fence was Adam sitting on a crate, huddled up against the rain and sopping wet, his face tucked in his palms and his elbows resting on his knees as he sat there, wallowing in sadness.
“Adam?” Rachel asked, more worried than she was confused.
Adam looked up from his hands, his eyes red. Rachel walked closer and hopped up on the fence. The early morning sun had brightened the overcast day into a wet, grey, wonderland. Adam and Rachel were sitting together at the fence, almost in their own little world as the mist surrounded them on all sides, making them invisible to anyone more than a few feet away. It wasn’t like anyone was out to see them this early in the morning anyways, except John of course, who had stayed behind to get their possessions out of the rain.
“Adam, you can tell me anything you know. When I look at you I see only the man I love. Everyone has their minor…defects. Nobody is perfect.”

“Minor?” Adam asked, a slight grin on his face. The grin quickly faded as he composed himself to explain everything he needed to, and explain he did. Why his father had left, scared of his possessed son, the first and second time that the demon soul had manifested, and the conversation in the never-changing land with the two mysterious strangers. He explained that they had told him what it was and what Zamorak planned to do when he found the artifact he was looking for. He explained that his changes were getting worse. Adam, finished giving Rachel the details, concluded with a final statement, his eyes closed in shame, “I’m a monster.”
Neither Rachel nor Adam had expected what happened next but Adam opened his eyes when he felt a pair of arms wrap around his shoulders and hands cross over his back, embracing him in a hug. Adam hugged back and Rachel kissed him lightly on the forehead before responding, “You are not a monster.”
Adam’s face lit up like a Wintumber tree when Rachel moved down and kissed him right on the lips before speaking again, “And you never were.”
Rachel moved her head down to Adam’s shoulder and they stayed entwined there, in the rain, warming one another with their love.

There it is, Chapter 26, a very short, very mushy Chapter. Criticism for this chapter is VERY welcome as I have not ever written truly romantic material, and so I am very sure that I am at fault in some way.
Elly
EDIT: Cund, your thoughts are all very helpful, I will edit the story to fix them (at least some of them) later today. Thanks!
