×Chapter 15×
×Jailbreak×
This was the only practical use for the rags that they had given Adam to wear in place of his usual desert attire; a use as a key holder. With Al’s help Adam had managed to sew a rough patch over the spot where the key was concealed.
Adam looked down at his hands, they were raw and torn from his grasp on his pickaxe; a grasp that tightened any time a guard would menacingly pass by. He wondered if he could still wield a sword with his hands in this condition. Adam was lying on his cot a little while before sunrise, he was sprawled awkwardly on his side, his best attempt to be comfortable on the thin sleeping mat. Rachel’s conscience delicately touched his. Adam sat upright and blinked as she mentally encouraged him to wake up. Adam stood to his feet and looked about, everyone else was asleep. Everyone except Al.
Al was actually a very religious man, he prayed every evening before he sat on his mat cross legged and meditated until morning. Adam’s slight movement was easily detected by the master thief. As quietly as he could Adam whispered into his ear, “Ready.”
Al responded just as delicately, “I have been ready.”
Adam and Al stood up silently and brushed the dirt from their clothes and drained the water that had been placed near their beds at night. They began to navigate upwards through the dark tunnels. Adam and Al’s footsteps fell silently upon the smooth mud that made up the floor of the passageway they were in. Suddenly a clunk reverberated throughout the tunnel and a shadow appeared around the corner. It was a guard going about his morning patrols. Adam and Al hugged the wall tightly, shielded from sight behind a jutting rock in the wall.

As soon as the man passed them Al snuck up behind him and daintily removed his hilt and sword and handed it to Adam. Adam would have been surprised to see such a mastery of thieving if Al had not already demonstrated many times before his expertise in his craft. The clunking slowly but surely faded off into the distance and the shadow vanished behind a corner leading down into the tunnels, he was going to wake up the rest of the prisoners.
Adam felt a sudden jolt as a thought from Rachel struck him with a tidal wave of joy, “I can see you Adam.”
A wide grin spread across his face and he thought back, “Don’t leave me in suspense here, come join us! This is Al, a good friend of mine. Don’t worry; I’ll shield you from any harm that may come at us.”
This time a voice responded as Rachel walked out from behind a different corner than the guard had come from, this one was the other of the two main tunnels, this one led to the women’s mines, “I can defend myself Adam, as long as I have the right runes I am a force to be reckoned with.”
Adam smirked when he knew she was just as quirky as ever, even after being imprisoned.
“Shall we?* asked Adam.
“Yes, let’s,” Rachel replied as she channeled her magical energy through an air rune and swung the door wide open with a large gust of wind.
“Go!” Adam said as guards turned to see why the door was opening.
At his signal Rachel turned around and used a very powerful water jet to carve boulders from the tunnel behind them, blocking any guards doing rounds in the tunnels from coming up behind them. They were much better off than the guards outside the tunnels.
Guards funneled out into the main opening of the mining camp, a flood of them coming from the guards’ quarters with swords at the ready. “You two, run for the gate! I’ll be right behind; those guards took my favorite dagger.”

Adam ran towards the guards quarters as all of his swordsmanship rushed back into him in great bursts. Adam plowed through the guards like they were small game, defenseless as mice in a trap. He thrust forward and brutally skewered a guard on his sword, then withdrew it and with a horizontal swipe dispatched several more. He had gotten stronger from the manual labor he had undergone during his week in the mines, these guards were no longer a match for him. After he had killed the last of the guards blocking the building Adam ran inside to find where they had put his supplies. Adam burst through a door labeled “Captain Ali” and spotted his favorite dagger on the Captain’s desk. The red dagger was shining in the light, its sturdy grey hilt ever so familiar to Adam’s hand. Adam swiped it without a thought and was just about to sprint back down the stairs when Captain Ali himself appeared in the doorway.
“You won’t be leaving this prison. Nobody has ever escaped under my watch!”
Adam held his dagger at the ready, “First time for everything.”
Ali sprinted forward with surprising speed and swung at Adam’s head, Adam parried his longsword with his dagger, employing his great skill with a sword. He slipped under Captain Ali’s guard and thrust his dagger upwards between the gap in his platebody. Adam then sliced sideways and left a huge incision dripping blood through the Captain’s armor. The captain fell to the floor, blacked out from the pain.
Adam raced down the stairs to the ground floors of the building and rushed outside, sprinting for the gate at full speed. A huge sound reverberated throughout the prison yard; the Captain had sounded the alarm. All around the prison armed guards appeared in towers lining the perimeter with extras stationed on a wall over the gate and armed with bows and arrows. Adam spotted the Captain supported by one of his guards who was holding him up by the arm so he could see what was happening.
