Adrienne knitted her brows together. Evvie’s been in Reyalia? Why hasn’t word reached me? Would Fyrborn know anything about this?

She pushed aside those thoughts, though she noted that she’d ask her friend if he’d withheld such information or if he had simply not known.
“Well, if you should need any help getting acquainted with the court again, I’m happy to assist,”
she added.
“But I believe there’s someone else here you might be inclined to greet,”
Adrienne said.

The empath scanned the room near the king, and quickly discovered the man she was looking for: Dalhover. She reached out to his mind – nothing so intrusive as a full read, just enough to let him know where she was in the room and, when he glanced her way, she waved him over. Assuming he joined the pair of princesses, Adrienne would greet him warmly, if a bit formally.

The Throne Room

The dance began slightly ahead of schedule, as Chloelle and Flynn seized the initiative. Normally the period of mingling would have lasted a bit longer before the dance could begin, but it seems the two had other ideas. The musicians quickly switched to more dance-appropriate songs, as the rest of the room began pairing off to follow their examples. Others let a few low scandalized whispers at the sight of the Flower of Alyssium dancing with the Black Prince.

On his throne, the King looked to Leon and Dalhover. He languidly waved his hand in the general direction of the dance. "Go on. Join the celebration, both of you. I don't need the two of you constantly at my side. I'll be down there in a minute, anyway."

---

As groups broke away from their clusters and spread out through the room as partners paired up, and became clear that a great many important people were gathered here to day. Most of the nobles were Sorusian, but there were others from the neighbouring provinces.

There was Duchess Helena Harstein of Havelan, as well as over a dozen counts and barons with their entourages. There was Jarl Bolag of Orlossik, along with half a dozen of his Thanes. Marquis Marian Diranni - Chloelle and Derene's uncle, who had come with many of his own vassals. Earl Kalric Barclay of the Dwarves was present as well. Curiously, High Chief Bolag of the Goblin Confederacy was absent, but a handful of goblin chiefs had managed to attend as well.

Under the guidance of the music, Chloelle spins and twirls around their own little spot on the dance floor. She steps away, twirls once under his arm before returning to him with another spin, chuckling as she does so.

"I have been doing well, dear brother. Things do not change so often as they perhaps should here in the capital,"
she answers pleasantly, the light reflecting off the pearls decorating her hair.
"Things have been tense since His Majesty's recall of the Scions so that he can announce an heir. Though I rather suspect my dear sister is lamenting how much money this week is about to cost us."

Her feet step delicately in time with his own, as if she were lost to the dance. But still, there is a strange edge to her - as if she were on high alert. From the outside, she looks as happy and relaxed as anyone.
"You've been away for so long - you'll tell me everything you've been up to, yes? Do promise me you will,"
she twitters away like a typically nosy noble. She offers him a bright and innocent smile - the picture of sisterly adoration.

" I can't say I blame her - father does have a certain habit of overindulgence, " Flynn replied as his eyes swept over the throne room, considering the costs involved in what he could see alone - he restrained the urge to wince sympathetically for the work his sisters would be dealing with, turning his focus back to Chloelle. " What follows this week will undoubtedly bring plenty of change to the capital - mainly for those who backed the wrong horse, soon to be scrambling to gain favour with the chosen heir. "

The prince spoke of the situation with a detached amusement; the tone of one who had no illusions of his own chances at being named heir, or indeed, one who had no significant interest in being named as heir in the first place. The steps of the dance continued without a hint of misstep from Flynn, his quiet confidence projecting out just as much as Chloelle's talented grace.

One had to have at least a certain level of perceptive skill to be able to survive as a Scion of House Arenar, or at least one who was disdained by the wider populace. Thus, the unusual alertness in Chloelle did not go unnoticed by the man - but even so, he made no mention of it, particularly when prying earbugs were all around in the form of dancing couples.

" I don't know sister, are you certain such a delicate 'Flower of Alyssium' can stomach the sordid tales of the diabolical 'Black Prince'? " Poked the man with a teasing lilt.

As the dance began in earnest, Ariadne rose from her seat, moving around the middle of the hall as she avoided the dance. She might not like to become involved with many of the activities of high society, but that wasn’t to say she didn’t know what she was doing. Training for such things had been mandatory when she was younger, and although many lessons had been tedious, dancing had not been one of them. The movements were not dissimilar to combat, and the physical nature meant she wasn’t all that bad at grasping the nature of the art.

Still, not having a partner generally made such activities undesirable, and as she certainly did not have one here. That was enough to keep her off the dance floor, which was just as well since now was a better time for a discussion than the small amount of time in the entryway. There may be plenty of time for such a thing, given the announcement that this party would continue for much longer than was necessary, but it was probably best to just do something rather than sit around.

As for who to approach, there were two options. The first was already engaged by her twin, and Ariadne didn’t feel as though she needed to interject herself into the conversation. The other, and the one she decided to approach, was Reyner. Not only did she still need to introduce herself, but there were a few questions she wanted to ask.

Excuse me, Reyner?
” she asked, approaching and offering her hand. Although he likely already knew her name due to everyone’s introductions, it was still right to introduce herself. She would also be rather easy to recognize; not many people here would be wearing a formal military uniform.

Ariadne. I apologize for not introducing myself earlier. Would you mind me asking you a few things about the goblin tribes and the military structure there?

The heirs came one after the other, the various drinks arranged over yonder tempting the old knight. After what seemed like an eternity, Dalhover was dismissed by The King. The old knight nodded and something clinked in his dusty brain...

An Elf? Not just any Elf.

She waved him over, he approached. Smiling, Dalhover bowed before the elven lady. “Hello, milady.” If Princess Evvie, who had spoken with Adrienne moments ago, remained, Dalhover would bow before her as well. “I hope all goes well. Only a week before the next heir is chosen!”

He fetched a nearby beer and drank while...

Reyner accepted the handshake with his usual iron grip and a less usual expression that hinted slightly more hostility.

"Well met." he replied blankly. "Far be it from Alyssium to care about the affairs of goblins. And me of all people you ask?" The lord of Wheelton was clearly unimpressed, and anyone familiar with his home region would more than understand why.

She accepted the grip with a solid one of her own, and although she gave no indication it was a good sign to her that his grip was that way. It was not the grip of a noble that had nothing better to do than sit around all day, and although she hoped that meant he would be better to deal with than most of those the expression that came with it was less than encouraging. It was what she expected, really, since he was not incorrect. Still, even if that was how it would be, she still at least wanted to say her part, whether he believed she actually meant it or not.

I ask you because you’re here, and because you’re right. Alyssium as a whole does not care, but that does not make the goblin tribes any lesser citizens than those here.
” was Ariadne’s reply. In a slightly quieter tone, she added, “
I admit that it is also because I have little knowledge of the true situation, and cannot think of any way I can help in an official capacity that will not make things worse.

Though her lack of arrogance was a good sign, Reyner was yet not familiar enough with this one to decide if her honesty was in fact that.

"Then maybe it's best that the arms of the palace stay within their concerns." Reyner concluded defensively. "You ask about goblin military structure - a dangerous subject if the tenets should be so divine. Maybe you've heard the stories from Wheelton - of the warlike chief who's blasphemy saw his death at the hands of own. He sought and found an assassination - one for the lord, and then his own for his misdoings."

Reyner was of course referring to the events preceding his ascension to lordship. While not widely known due to the inconsequential nature of the town, it was certainly not unknowable to those with an interest in such matters.

"Goblins move in the shadows of the trees. Like rain falls through every leaf of every branch to every rock and every root - goblins are the same. You'll not find the military structure you're looking for, nor any fight that can be won by presence of knights. It is why I sought trade deals rather than threats of violence." All the while making his point, Reyner's eyes darted back and forth a few times from Ariadne. Though still engaged, he had clearly spotted something in the room that was tugging at his attention.

Chloelle laughs in amusement.
"That is true - I am curious to see how many panicked faces I will witness when the heir is announced. Though you make it sound as though you have no interest in being the heir yourself. Or have I misunderstood?"
She watches him with unblinking eyes, her attention on him. Their movements are constant - too swift for the twitch of her elven ears to be very noticable.

Even with the music and dancing couples surrounding them, she took note of her siblings interacting with each other, curious to see who held ambition and who did not.

"I think I can stomach such things - I reckon the tales of the cursed Black Prince are greatly overexaggerated,"
she answers pleasantly, her warm smile leaning towards a slight smirk at the corner of her lips.
"Besides, even the most delicate and beautiful of flowers have a myriad of conditions to survive and bloom in the face of adversity, wouldn't you agree?"
