" No, you've understood me quite well - to sit on the throne is a burden I have little interest in taking on, even were my chances better than 'laughably close to zero', " Flynn replied without any need to think about it, the ring of truth surrounding his words - albeit the reason for his lack of interest didn't entirely strike with the same truth, at least not to one so keen eared as his sibling. He chuckled. " Can you imagine me sat on the throne all day, solving disputes and humouring the nobility? I'd go mad within a week. "

The song sounded as though it were soon coming to an end, likely to be the end of their dance floor discussion - already the prince could see on the sidelines people watching them, some eager for their chance to ask one of the Scions for the next dance.

" I would say the court is always adversarious, proving you right all the same. " He lightly shrugged his shoulders with his agreement, considering Chloelle for a couple of short moments - his eyes still full of warmth but boring a hole through her all the same, momentarily unreadable. " But you have my promise that I'll tell you of where I've been and what I've done, though I don't think I can condense so many years into a few songs - later, when we're not soon to be bowled over by eager young lords and ladies looking for a dance. "I thought as much - I can just imagine you sitting on the throne, crown askew...That blank stare as you're presented with petty disputes among the nobility and advisors yelling their advise at you while you wonder why they're wasting your time with this kind of thing...Have I guessed you right, dear brother?"
Chloelle comments with a soft giggle, twirling outwards for a moment before spinning back to meet him in the middle.

Slowly, the music begins to slow down - signalling that the first dance is coming to an end. As the music slows, so too does Chloelle's steps until finally, their dance finishes.

"I'll hold you to that promise, Flynn. Perhaps you'll humour me one of the days by visiting for tea, hm? I suspect the evenings leading up to His Majesty's grand announcement will be quite busy."
She seems to gaze off at nowhere in particular, her expression distant but for a moment before she blinks once and smiles up at him.
"Alas, it seems I've taken up your time long enough now, hm? Perhaps again later?

Eva noticed Adrienne's questioning look.
"I kept mostly to myself. I did my best to make my presence unnoticed."

She followed Adrienne's gesture and saw Dalhover approach. She smiled, and curtsied.
"Hello, Dalhover. It's good to see you again. This is a most exciting time! I hope you've been well these past years."
She waited a moment, hoping to hear his response, and she made a note to herself to ask Adrienne her own thoughts at a better moment.

Unfortunately for Ariadne, her knowledge of the situation of which Reyner spoke was minor at best. It had certainly been a topic around the time it had happened, but she had still been new to her post and hadn’t had time to actually investigate what had happened. It was shameful, really, for she felt as though it was difficult to claim she cared about the people when she did not possess adequate knowledge of the goings-on of said people. Still, that did not mean she could use it as an excuse to stop trying.

You misunderstand. I am not looking for a specific structure, nor am I looking for order through violence. An army’s purpose does not need to be solely to fight.
” she told him. While it was likely she could continue on with this conversation for a while, she noticed his eyes moving away from her towards something else, and so decided to end with, “
I don’t expect you to trust me right now, but I just ask that you keep in mind that I would like to help.

Although it was clearly meant to end the conversation, and give Reyner the opportunity to go after whatever else was taking his attention, she made sure to give him a chance to say something else if he wished to before giving a slight bow and beginning to move away.
Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

The tallest sister is also the nicest! the old knight thought.

“Well, my bones haven’t gotten much better since your absence! Though, it’s better knowing you are safe. Barbara was guilty when you were gone, she thought that, by telling you that you were being married off, she caused your departure and blamed herself. She would be so happy to see you. I think she’s at The Golden Butterfly right now. Oh, and we can’t forget, but I am sure Lord Theren and Lady Sibilla would be elated to see you, too--unless you already met them recently?”

Dalhover swagged his drink, and then...

Adrienne smiled serenely as the older man approached the two women. She was, of course, dissatisfied with her sister’s answer. But the time for arguing for more details was not now, and certainly the place was not here.

Once Dalhover arrived, he customarily bowed to the two royal women. He offered some pleasantries at his arrival, which Evvie returned in kind.

“Yes, everything is going much better than expected,”
Adrienne replied, shooting her younger sister a glance.
“I’ll leave you two to catch up, I know how close you used to be,”
the elf said, slipping her way gracefully toward the food table. She picked at some of the provided refreshments, but mostly decided to look around the room. Occasionally, some dignitary or other would offer their well wishes, but mostly she allowed herself to observe the room from some distance.

Eva smiled to Adrienne as she stepped away.
"I'm sure that we'll catch up later,"
she said as her sister headed towards the banquet table.

She then turned her full attention to Dalhover. She diverted her eyes when he mentioned Barbara's guilt.
"Oh, that had nothing to do with it,"
she said much too quickly. Still looking away, though more carefully considered, she continued,
"I'm sorry that she had that impression. I didn't mean to cause her any pain."

Realizing she was staring at some noblewoman's shoes, she looked back at Dalhover.
"I haven't seen any of them since my arrival. I'll have to arrange to meet Barbara soon. Perhaps this week, to avoid the dull mid-week point in the festivities!"
She scanned the room, and then the castle with her magic.
"I don't think Lord Theren or Lady Sibilla are here currently, though I'm sure that as soon as they're notified of my return, they will arrive, probably sometime within the next few days."

She paused for a moment, then asked,
"And how is Constance?"

The Throne Room

Most of the room had begun dancing, although clusters had begun to form around those Scions who were not currently at the dance floor, as nobles either attempting them to dance, or began clustering around them and discretely attempting to eavesdrop from a respectable distance. As Derene had predicted earlier, conversing with any privacy in such circumstances was effectively impossible.

---

As soon as Flynn and Chloelle parted ways on the dance floor, they were soon beset by other nobles hoping for a dance themselves.

Flynn found himself face to face with none other than the Duchess Helena Harstein. She was a few years younger than him, and unattached as far as he knew, but her intentions in asking for this dance were still a mystery. However, Flynn also noticed that his uncle, Leon, was watching him from afar.

Meanwhile, Chloelle would see that the Princesses Derene and Kathlyn were beckoning her over to join them. However before she could decide whether or not she wished to do so, one of the people pressing her for a dance introduced himself as Thane Rorok - the son and heir of Jarl Bolag. He was tall, with snow-white skin, and a pair of short tusks. He too was uncommitted, although a match between an orc and the royal family was unprecedented, and there was a certain hint of reluctance in his eyes. As if he either didn't actually want to dance with her, or was worried she would reject him - orcs could be hard to read like that.

Before Adrienne could take her leave from Evalyne and Dalhover, the crowd surrounding them soon parted, as Prince Gallus strode toward them and entered their little circle. "Never was one for dancing," he remarked casually. "Not this sort of dancing, anyway. Give me a sparring yard any day." He offered a respectful nod to Dalhover - the one who had trained him - and then he made a show of looking around. The bastard prince sighed, and lowered his voice to a whisper. "But they expect us to. Bunch of vultures, the lot of them. They won't leave us alone otherwise."

He looked to Adrienne and Evalyne. "I don't suppose either of you would be willing?" he asked casually, though there was an almost pleading look in his eye. It was well known among House Arenar that Prince Gallus had no interest in romantic or intimate contact with neither men nor women, and had little patience for those who attempted to express such an interest in him. Dancing with a sibling would give him an excuse to evade such advances without coming across as rude or anti-social.

---

One lord was bold enough to directly approach Reyner and Ariadne directly. Earl Kalrik Barclay, ruler of the dwarves. He had bright red hair and a bushy bear. "Honour to the both of you, and beggin' your pardon, your graces," he said with a bow. "But would either of ye be interested in a dance?" he grinned.

Of course the Earl of Darmoor was quite happily married, and dwarves took such vows especially seriously, so the intent behind this request was likely non-romantic and strictly platonic. Perhaps he simply wished to make their acquaintance, get to know one of them better, or strike up a friendship.

Flynn smirked. " I daresay you aren't far off, " He replied, flowing through the final motions as the last notes of the song played out - soon the pair of them coming to a halt. " Naturally, I made a promise did I not? Once we can be away from the press of all these courtly expectations and eager ears, you'll get your stories. "

With a last smile the pair separated, the prince striding little more than a few steps towards the side before the first of the eager nobility met him on his path. And what a first it was - none other than the ruler of the east, Duchess Helena Harstein herself. Flynn's expression betrayed no hint of surprise at coming face to face with the woman, taking her in with the same cool smile he had extended to the room upon his initial entry. At her request to dance the prince's smile widened marginally.

" It'd be a pleasure, Lady Harstein, " He answered, smoothly accepting her hand while the space around them cleared to make way for the new dance partners. Even as they took the first steps and fell into the motions Flynn could not help but make a comment, tone tinted with a friendly amusement. " You've shot up since last we met. Less than I'd expected, but more than I'd hoped. "
