Chapter XXIX

Death, carnage, smoke, shadow, and evil flooded into the six cities. Lucien was leading an army against Varrock, Zemouregal against Camelot, Hazeel against Ardougne, and Khazard against Falador. Lumbridge and Yanille did not have a Mahjarrat in their battles, because the Mahjarrat considered them impossible to lose. Lumbridge was defenseless, and Yanille had two armies attacking it: the Mahjarrat army and the ogre army.

************************************************

“Ardougne!! Ardougne!! Fight for your city, brave warriors!”

The battle had become havoc. Every street was filled with bodies, and the guards and civilians alike had been forced to begin fighting for their lives. Julia, one of the members of Gregory’s group was fighting a tormented demon in Ardougne square.

“Die, creatures of Lucien!!” she screamed, and as she spoke she charged at a tormented demon, made a leap in the air, and stabbed it in the chest. It roared, and as it was about to seize her, she climbed nimbly up on its shoulders, and made a finishing blow by hewing its head off.

Disgusted by the spurt of blood that ensued, Julia leaped off and sliced in half two zombies with one stroke, and then twirled around to parry an axe stroke from a goblin. Releasing a blast of fire from her hand, she killed another thirty zombies and charged headlong into a small group of tormented demons.

Elsewhere in the city, Victoria was fighting a regiment of hobgoblins with all her strength. With a yell, she swung her sword around, slicing two heads and a limb, and with her backslash killed another. As she was surrounded, she whispered an incantation that Gregory had personally taught her, and all the hobgoblins within about fifteen feet screamed, and fell to the ground. Taking advantage of the goblins’ petrified surprise, she charged forward, cutting her way out of the circle and shooting a blast of earth magic at those who followed her.

Pat was in front of the gate of King Lathas’ palace, and she was faced by twenty tormented demons, at least a hundred zombies, and a large variety of other creatures. The knights of the castle had chosen the cowardly path, and had closed the gate with Pat outside, and she was trapped. As she prepared for her last fight, murmuring incantations and spells, suddenly she heard a cry, and Julia came up behind the army of evil creatures. At the same time, at least thirty icyenes flew down from above, and assaulted the demons. Pat charged forward, and the battle continued.

“This... is our last battle. My king, the enemy is too great, and we cannot fight a Mahjarrat.”

“I know, Merlin, but we will not give up. We will fight to the death! Come, let us die with glory!!”

Arthur let out a battle cry, and charged headlong towards the enemy army. His knights followed. They broke upon the enemy line like bowling balls through a flower bed, but the flower bed was too large, and even bowling balls traveling at great speed lose their momentum.

At least eight hundred creatures died with that first charge, but then Zemouregal let out a roar, and cast his staff on high. The earth clove asunder, and the quake that ensued made the knights lose their footing.

As the army was ready to close upon them, there was a cry.

“Wait! You have forgotten something Zemouregal!”

“What do you want Lucien? Can’t you see I am about to win this?”

The figure who Zemouregal called Lucien walked toward him, with the zombies and warriors ready to kill the knights at any moment.

“Zemouregal, you have forgotten... ME.”

As Lucien said this, his robes changed from black to a heavy many-colored cloak, and the hood was thrown back, and the staff in his hand changed from the Staff of Armadyl to a straight, silver staff.

Gregory raised his hands, and all the captured knights suddenly felt a burst of energy. The zombies holding the knights all reeled backward, and the knights jumped on their feet.

“YOU!! I knew you would turn up eventually!”

“Yes you did, but you did*’t expect it in this way, did you? I defeated your army at Lumbridge, so now I am here, to kill you!”

Gregory twirled his staff, and it disappeared into thin air. Drawing his swords, Gregory charged at Zemouregal, who assumed his full form, rising up to fourteen feet tall.

Blast after blast of energy was released, and Zemouregal’s army was quickly dwindling. With a roar of fury, Zemouregal opened his hands and an ocean of water poured out, flooding Gregory off his feet and sending him twirling away.

The carnage was shocking. The piles of zombies had grown so tall that the attacking army did not even have to use siege towers or ladders to get on the wall; they simply climbed up the pile of bodies.

Varrock was in a very dangerous position. The guards were demoralized by the cowardice of the king, and the only people really leading the defense were Eric, Robert, Mark, and Kevin, who were all sent by Gregory.

Lucien, foreseeing the presence of many, many adventurers at the Grand Exchange in Varrock, had sent a very large army here, largely consisting of tormented demons. The noobs walking in the city barely had time to say, “FR33 ST00F Pl0x” to the demons, before getting killed by a single stroke. Experienced adventurers, with a lot of combat history in their background, either tried their hand against this assault, or teleported away.

The elite of the elite, the 138s, the partyhat, torva, and chaotics owners, prepared for the coolest battle of their lives. They had experience in killing tormented demons before, and usually succeeded in fighting them. However, they underestimated what they were going up against. Hundreds of tormented demons were attacking, and even the most experienced and powerful and RICH adventurers were killed by sheer numbers.

The city was filled with enemies, setting building on fire, grabbing and carrying away civilians, and breaking up the ale houses. Robert, Mark, and Kevin were running through the city, slaying enemies, and helping people stop the fires that had spread all over the city.

Eric was at the west wall, giving orders and fighting off the tormented demons, and hoping... for aid...

Yanille was under heavy siege on two sides, and the captain of the guard was under heavy stress. The walls were being battered to pieces, and siege towers were on every side. Night was falling, and the torches of the enemy were already being lit.

Dan and Walter leaped off the south wall to the amazement and horror of the guards, and charged headlong into a wall of ogres! They were quite confident, especially due to the fact that ogres have large bellies, making them clumsy and easy to stab right in the uncomfortable place. The two brave men broke upon the wall like water on rock, but all the ogres they struck cried out and fell in pain.

David, concerned with the seeming carelessness of his comrades, jumped off the wall as well to try and save them, but when he arrived, he realized it really was quite easy, so he joined them.

Meanwhile, on the north side of the city, things were not going so well. The gap in the wall at the north-east corner was taken, and several other holes were appearing in the north wall, through which goblins and zombies were charging. The tormented demons had climbed the wall and were killing the guards and archers, and the wizards in the Watchtower were forced to flee.

The Magic Guild, however, was a bastion of refuge and power for the wounded soldiers. Adventurers were required to have good magic skills to enter, and were not allowed in if they did not apply. The reason for this seems to be normal, but as a matter of fact there was a magical barrier around the tower that would push back anyone who the wizards did not want to enter! Therefore, the wizards let in wounded men to rest for a while before sallying forth again to attack.

However, the battle was far from won, and on the contrary the city was almost taken by the massive numbers of the enemy.

Fire... smoke... terror... death.

The assault on Falador had been devastating. Apparently Khazard had some skill at besieging, as he had made a superbly skilled assault. The trebuchet* fired pots of oil which exploded into flame when they hit their target, and the city had fires burning on many buildings already. The gate had been smashed by a battering ram, and the warriors of Khazard were flooding the walls.

The city had been occupied, and the civilians were not killed, but simply made captives in their own homes. The last of the knights and guards lined the bridge up into the castle, and the battlements bristled with archers. John, Lia, and Bob were at the front of that last line of defense, and Khazard walked right up to them, giving the defenders a glare so fierce that even the bravest knights whimpered.
