Chapter XXXVIII

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“It was the fifth age, and Runescape, in most ways, was at peace. Adventurers swarmed over every land, and eliminated anything that could possibly hurt or scare civilians. Some people called it the time of peace, and in a way it was a time of peace, but a heedless act would soon put an end to that peace. A boy’s actions would lead to the destruction of peace in Runescape for many years to come.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It was only too true. Lucien and the other mahjarrat with him were determined to find Gregory at a disadvantage, and the only way to do this was to disorient and divide his group. The cities under attack were Varrock, Lumbridge, Camelot, Falador, Ardougne, and Yanille.

Each city had a regiment of spiritual mages and warriors from Saradomin, as well as a group of icyenes, but it was not enough. There was a huge force of zombies, tormented demons, mages of Hazeel, Khazard warriors, and a variety of other creatures attacking each city. The Knights of Camelot were hard pressed, the Guards of Falador were ringing the alarm, and the men of Lumbridge were almost defenseless. In Yanille, the watchmen had seen the enemy coming quite early, so they were fairly ready for an assault by the time it arrived.

In Falador, Varrock, and Yanille, the enemy had brought siege towers, trebuchets, and catapults to besiege the walls. However, in Camelot, Lumbridge, and Ardougne, it was an open battle, with guards and evil creatures fighting in the streets. The Knights of the Round Table in Camelot were fighting well, smashing and ripping apart one creature after another, but in Lumbridge and Ardougne things were taking a downturn. Lumbridge only had a few inexperienced men trained to fight pathetic goblins; what chance would they have against a massive flaming tormented demon?

“Quick!! John, you are good in leadership: teleport to Falador and help them fight the enemy. Lia and Bob, join him. Eric, go to Varrock with Robert, Mark, and Kevin. Dan, Walter, and David, to go to Yannile. Sylvia, go to Camelot and find out how things are going with the Knights, and if it is doing badly come and tell me. Julia, Victoria, and Pat, go to Ardougne, and the rest come with me!”

As he spoke this, Gregory jumped through the portal for Lumbridge, and the scene before his eyes shocked him. Devastation everywhere. The buildings were flaming, the stones making up the road were unearthed, and the grass was already burned up. He could see evil creatures running about in all directions, and a single tormented demon was busy killing all of the goblins.

Looking over his shoulder, Gregory saw a horde of zombies and Khazard warriors running into the Castle. Letting out a bloodcurdling yell, he raised his hands, and all the creatures within thirty feet of him gave out a cry and fell to the ground. Drawing his swords, Greogry charged to the castle and let loose his power on the enemies running into the castle.

“The rest of you save the city! I must secure the castle!” said Gregory, as he sliced the head off a zombie.”

The part of the team that had come with him attacked, and gradually the enemy backed off, but their resolution only increased with their fury.

The stench of smoke, blood, carcasses, and death filled the air. King Arthur looked up after resting a moment, and saw piles upon piles of hundreds of zombies, tormented demons, and other evil creatures. Merlin was leaning on a signpost wearily, having cast so many spells and incantations that his mind was exhausted.

King Arthur strode across the battlefield, and finding Sylvia, said, “I am impressed by your bravery and skill young woman. What is your name?”

“My name is Sylvia, and I am one of Gregory’s comrades.”

“Impressive. You fought well, killing almost as many creatures as some of my greatest knights did. I hope...”

At this, he was suddenly cut off by a scream: not a child, not a human, but rather, the sound of a demon roaring out his wrath. All at once, another huge force, even larger then before, came over the hill, led by a dark figure cloaked in heavy black robes. The figure raised his hands, and all of the undead creatures which the brave knights had already killed raised their heads, regenerated their limbs, and stood on their feet.

“Knights of Falador!! I have come to your aid!”

John had arrived at Falador with a flash of light and his two long two-handed swords gleaming in his hands. In all the training that Gregory’s group had received, John had proven to be the strongest warrior, most skilled mage, and best leader of the group.

“Who are you, strange warrior?” asked the captain of the knights on that side of the wall.

“I am here to lead you to victory, and save the city from this sudden attack.”

“Why should we trust you?”

“Because I know this enemy, and I alone can hold back that figure over there.” Saying this, John pointed to the black figure leading the army that was marching towards the city walls on the north side.

“That THING is a Mahjarrat. My training has given me enough power to hold it back for long enough for my master to come defeat him, but you must take my advice in defending the city.”

The captain of the entire guard walked up and said, “We will take your advice, but don’t count us as your servants.”

John said, “Very well then. Archers on the walls! Heavy infantry on the walls to defend the archers. Close the gates and secure them with beams. Set up ballistas and catapults to fire at the siege towers! Light infantry prepare to repel...”

The guards, paladins, and knights of Ardougne were absolutely exhausted from the battle only a few days before, and the city had only barely managed to repair a few of the main buildings. Here they were, already having to fight another battle, with even more creatures then before.

The members of Gregory’s group that were sent to Ardougne immediately organized and encouraged the fighting men of the city, of which there were about four thousand. The creatures already in the city were quickly killed, and the guards, knights, and paladins formed battle lines on the outskirts of the city. The battle was going well, until a Mahjarrat, uncloaked, stood before them. He stood fifteen feet tall, and opening his mouth he boomed, “Finally I take my revenge on Ardougne. I have been trapped, defeated, humiliated for hundreds of years: NOW IS MY HOUR!!”

Hazeel raised his hand, and the men that stood before him were thrown back. The three women that Gregory had sent to Ardougne had not the ability to stop him, so they simply skirmished with him and lasted as long as they could. Pat teleported to Lumbridge to tell Gregory what was happening, and the other two fought, mindless for their own safety, but only caring for the survival of the city.

“King Roald!! King Roald!! Where is he?!?!” Eric was roaring at the head guard who was blocking the way into the palace. “Let me in!!”

“No one may enter under the order of King Roald. No matter what the circumstances, he is not to be disturbed.”

Eric’s face lapsed into a look of despair for just a second, but then it settled into a savage and grim frown, full of fury. Swinging his sword, he struck the guard’s weapon to the ground, and then Eric picked up the guard and threw him aside.

He charged down the path, up the steps through the door and into King Roald’s chamber. It was empty. Thinking he heard a whimper, Eric lifted the side of the bed and looked under. Lo and behold, there lay the great, brave, and powerful King of Varrock, hiding under his bed.

Filled with fury that grew with every second, Eric picked up the king by the collar and lifting him up off the ground, (Eric was quite a strong person) he yelled, “What are you doing here?!?! You order your guards to do nothing, then you order to be left alone, then you hide under the bed!!! I can’t even get them to defend the city because of ‘King’s orders!!!’ The enemy marches ever closer, and the guards of Varrock will not fortify the walls. I DEMAND that you immediately get out there YOURSELF and help me get your guards into position!!”

At this, five guards burst into the room with drawn swords, and seeing the position of the king in Eric’s hand, they advanced.

“I will come,” said the king, “but I first require that you put me down.

Eric placed him on his feet, and walked behind the king as he strode out the door, down the steps, and into the city.

With the approval of the king, Eric finally got the guards onto the walls, forming shield walls at the gaps in the walls, and archers stationed in the battlements. Eric looked out on the enemy army, and his heart sank. He saw hundreds upon hundreds of creatures, and a horribly familiar figure leading the army. The figure was dressed in black, and it leaned on a staff: a blue staff with the emblem of Armadyl on it.

“Yanille, of all the other towns, was probably the most prepared for the onslaught that ensued. The warriors that Gregory had sent did not have to organize the defense: the captains of the guard and the wizards of the Magic Guild did that. Dan, Walter, and David simply fought, and they were very useful in the battle.

However, the downside to this situation was the fact that the Mahjarrat sent the largest force they had against Yanille, and Yanille did not have as many men as did Ardougne or Falador.

The men guarding the walls fought valorously, but the gap in the wall at the northeast corner was vulnerable. Dan, Walter, and David were stationed here, and they repelled wave after wave of tormented demons and zombies. But eventually, the battle took a downward turn. A ferocious tormented demon made it to the watchtower, and climbing up the outside wall, he reached in through a window with his hand, and grabbed one of the crystals guarding the city!

As he did this, the wizards inside cast a flood of spells at him, and the demon died, but it brought down with itself the crystal, clenched in his huge claw. As if by a signal, and ogres of the ogre city nearby all came out of hiding.

The Mahjarrat had planned for this, and had made a temporary alliance with the ogres to attack if the crystal protection could be removed. As soon as it had, the ogre legions charged forward, and the beleaguered guards had to face a two-sided attack: from the north and the south.
