Azzanadra and his group reached the base of the pyramid and began climbing the long flight of stairs that led to the top. The sun was bright in the advisor's eyes as he scanned the apex for a figure, but found none. Perhaps he just missed her.
The climb was long in the hot, scathing desert climate, but Azzanadra's Mahjarrat powers protected him from the brunt of the heat. The platform at the top of the stairs seemed an odd place to meet, but it was true that Enakhra would not be approached by any unwanted visitors. From her perch, she could see for miles around.
The wind stopped blowing as Azzanadra reached the top of the stairs, the four guards right behind him. He stood, gazing at the empty platform with only an open shaft that led down into the pyramid, for a moment. Instantly, he realized the inevitable truth that something was not right.
Azzanadra, with the prowess that dubbed him the Demon of the Fourth Family, heard the attack coming before it came. He spun and fired a burst of electricity that met the beam of ice aimed at him. The attacks met and canceled each other out, sending a wave of sparks showering across the platform. Fareed moved in and struck with a fire blast, but Azzanadra sidestepped the flames and fired his own bolt back. Fareed was hit squarely on the chest, and he was thrown over the side of the steps and out of sight.
"Force him in!" yelled Kamil in rage. Then, Azzanadra caught something out of the corner of his eye. From the smoke left behind by Fareed's attack emerged Damis, charging directly for him. He had used the smokescreen, and now it was too late for Azzanadra to counter. He threw up his arms, but Damis caught him with his brute force and started to slide him backwards toward the open hatch.
Azzanadra composed himself, caught with his left foot and stabbed at Damis's feet with his right. He succeeded in throwing off his foe's balance, and Azzanadra tossed Damis over his shoulder and down the other side of the pyramid.

Azzanadra twirled and came to rest in a low stance, gazing at Kamil and Dessous, his last two opponents on the platform. "What?" he asked. "All of you are in on this?"
Kamil grinned. "You bet," he replied. "And even you, the great Azzanadra, didn't suspect a thing!"
"Why?" Azzanadra inquired, his face cool and expressionless. Internally, his heart was pounding. He was strong, but it would still be difficult to defeat all four of them. He needed to buy some time to figure out a plan.
"Why? Why?" Dessous shouted, his voice cold. "Because you killed my father! That's why I'll never serve the Empty Lord!"
"Your father? Ah, Raldeir. So one of the Sons was among our number the whole time. You've done a good job of hiding your ancestry, as well as their...characteristic features."
"I won't be hiding them anymore! Not in the age of Mahjarrat!"
"The Age of Mahjarrat?"
"Exactly," replied Kamil. "That's what this is all about! Our master has grand schemes; the institution of Mahjarrat reign over the humans, the destruction of all other governments, and the establishment of a Mahjarrat god on this plane."
"A Mahjarrat god?" scoffed Azzanadra. "That's fallacy! The only way to..." The smirk fell off Azzanadra's face as fast as it appeared. "You need Zaros."
"He finally catches on!" Dessous taunted. "But it's too late! The Empty Lord's end is coming, and yours with it!"
"The Empty Lord? What are you saying?"
"That's your King, Azzanadra," replied Fareed, who came walking casually up the steps from below. "The people revere our Master. They chant his name in the streets. You did not know of this, but before the rebellion of Zaros, the people of Raldeir's Empire did the same. Now, they chant for the overthrow of Zaros in favor of a new Emperor. Zaros is the Empty Lord because he has no real power in this realm."
Azzanadra got a shiver as he felt the world evaporating around him. Four traitors...no, there were more. How many were there?
