"I'll fill you with the magic immediately," Tsugon replied. "Then, I'll teach you to use it tomorrow."
Zaros nodded in agreement. "Where?" he asked.
Tsugon cleared off the stone table. "This is as good a place as any. Just lie down; I'll need to concentrate for a moment." Zaros took his spot on the table. "You two should back away," Tsugon muttered to Azzanadra and Sliske. They did so without question.
Tsugon closed his eyes and clapped his hands together. He was silent for a moment, and all in the room could feel the energy welling around him. Sparks crackled around the stone table, and the silver trinkets adorning the walls glowed in resonance.
Finally, he reopened his eyes. "Ready?" he asked. All Zaros could muster was a shaky nod.
Suddenly, Tsugon thrust both hands onto Zaros's chest. The energy rushed into him, causing his body to go numb. Zaros couldn't even feel his own heartbeat: it was as though his soul was no longer attached to his physical form.
All the while, there was a burning sensation in Zaros's spirit. There came a sudden rush of pain as Zaros felt his soul contort into a new shape, and then Tsugon released his hold on the Emperor.
Zaros sat up, feeling returning to his limbs. "Did it work?" he asked.
Tsugon, panting, had braced himself against the wall of the cave to stay on his feet. He nodded, exhausted. The procedure had taken quite a bit out of him.
Zaros got to his feet, stretching. "It feels pretty good now," he remarked.
Tsugon responded with a gruesome chuckle. "You two had better grab him," he responded weakly to Azzanadra and Sliske. "The last time he went through this, he was a baby."
"Went through what?"
"Well, the first thing that will happed is that your body will have to... adjust to the new magic."
Zaros was about to inquire further, but then he felt a surge of pain strike him down. He had not experienced agony like this since Armadyl had given him the Mantle.

Zaros's legs gave out under him, but Azzanadra was close enough to catch him. He carried the Emperor into a side room that Tsugon pointed out, and there he laid Zaros on a small cot to rest.
Tsugon stumbled into the room after him, watching Zaros writhe in pain on the cot. He was breathing heavily. "An odd soul, he's got," Tsugon remarked. "I realize he's a god, but still...I've never sensed anything like that."
"What?" asked Azzanadra.
"I'm not sure...It's like his soul has already been mutilated somewhat. Thaduka must have done a hasty job when he first gave him the magic. Long story short, something is in there that shouldn't be."
"How can you tell?" asked Sliske, curious.
"I could hear it," Tsugon replied. "When I was in his mind, I could hear something in the darkness."
"Is it serious?" Azzanadra inquired. "Could it hurt him?"
Tsugon shook his head. "I doubt it. If it's remained dormant this long, chances are it's just an anomaly."
They looked down at the god in agony. "How long will the training take?" asked Azzanadra.
"Not long," Tsugon replied. "He's probably a fast learner."
"We'll hurry then," Azzanadra replied. Then, he turned to Sliske. "I'm going to Tyssouga."
"Right behind you," Sliske responded confidently.
Tsugon nodded. "I'll take good care of him."
Zaros's companions left Tsugon's hut without waiting for the dawn. Their night was long, burdened by their travels. However, Zaros's night was longer still. And as the hours passed, and the Khanu was absorbed more and more fully, the Emperor's power grew to new levels waiting to be achieved.

Chapter Nine: Ihrba*ka's Lament

It was a period of uncommon peace in Gielinor. Since the Emperor Zaros had left to venture into the depths of Freneskae and his Head General Zamorak had risen to the position of Regent, the instability in the Empire had all but vanished. In three short weeks, Zamorak had subdued the Sons of Raldeir and their revolution.
The news arrived one morning just after sunrise. There burst a loud roar in the skies of Senntisten, resounding across the countryside. The onlookers in the city watched as two dragons lowered out of the sky to land inside the Palace grounds. They came to rest inside the north courtyard of Zaros's castle.
Two men emerged from the palace to meet the pair on the dragons. "General Zamorak," one of the riders greeted them. "And Hazeel, as well. We have news for Emperor Zaros."
"He is not here," Zamorak replied, barely trying to hide the pride in each syllable. "I am ruling as Regent in his absence."
The riders glanced at each other, and then the leader said, "Very well. Is Lord Azzanadra present? He should hear this as well."
Zamorak's lip stiffened. "Alas, he is with Lord Zaros. You can tell your news directly to Hazeel and myself; we are more than capable of making decisions."
The rider nodded. "As you know, before he left, Lord Zaros ordered an attack on a suspected hideout for the Sons of Raldeir. We were successful; many of the revoluionaries are dead!"
Zamorak's eyes lit up. "Perfect! How many did you destroy?"
"Well, we counted four dozen casualties. They cannot have more than a dozen or two survivors. Drakan, Malak, and we would assume several others were not present at the hideout when we struck. Therefore, we do not know the amount or identities of those still alive."
