Chapter Five: An Unseen Enemy
Zayd was under Kamil's careful watch for the rest of the night. The guard, with his cool eyes that caught every detail of his surroundings, observed Zayd's actions with interest. Kamil stood behind Zayd's table at dinner, watched as he handled Lassarian business in his conference room, and finally showed him to his quarters that night.
"Thank you, Kamil," Zayd said as he stood in the doorway of his bedchamber. "I will take it from here."
"I would feel better if I searched the room for traps first," Kamil replied, walking into the room after Zayd.
Zayd nodded. "Of course." He almost shut the door behind him, but he stopped several inches short. "Excuse me," he said to Kamil, who was running his hand beneath the table near Zayd's window. "Continue your search, I forgot to tell Torin something."
A flash of disgust formed on Kamil's face, but it was almost unnoticeable. "Very well," he grunted, and Zayd left the room.
Zayd closed the door behind him and hurried down the halls to the security headquarters. He burst through the door, and Torin got up from his wooden stool to greet him.
"Lord Zayd?" he asked, surprised. "What brings you here this late? I would have thought that Kamil would have led you to your chambers by now."
Zayd's face was dark, and he spoke with gravity. "That's the problem," he said. "I don't trust that guy."
Torin's eyes widened. "He's Zaros's guard! You think Zaros would try to kill you?"
"I'm saying that Zaros doesn't know everything. Kamil may have deceived him."
Torin clapped Zayd on the shoulder and led him to the door. "I think you're getting a little paranoid. Kamil isn't there to harm you, he's there to protect you. Zaros knows what he's doing." Torin walked Zayd back out of the room into the halls. "Go to sleep, Lord Zayd. After a while, you'll grow accustomed to Kamil being here."
Zayd sighed. "Fine, Torin. Good night."
Zayd rolled his eyes as he went back to his room. Torin hadn't helped at all.
