"In this, our latest story competition, we want to hear tales of endeavour inspired by one of the two, great single-player campaigns in Armies of Gielinor: “Zamorak Returns” and “Saradomin Strikes”.

To enter the competition, choose which campaign you’d like to write about and then use your creative writing skills to come up with the best short story you can in no more than 400 words. Once you’ve written your story, send it to competitions@jagex.***, with your account/display name, and either “Zamorak Returns” or “Saradomin Strikes”, in the subject box.

The deadline for sending us your entry is 23:59 on Monday 29th March. The story competition judges will then spend the week locked in a room until they’ve uncovered the most engaging and exciting stories for each campaign. Once the judges have decided on their favourite entry for each campaign, we’ll announce the winners and award the authors with lifetime membership to both RuneScape and FunOrb, plus some exclusive signed artwork based on the campaign they’ve written about. Two runners-up (one for each campaign) will receive 12-months of RuneScape and FunOrb membership.

We have a dedicated thread for the competition that has full rules, terms & conditions and an FAQ. You’ll find this thread on both the RuneScape forums here, and on the FunOrb forums here.

We wish you the very best of luck!

Why don't you have a shot at it and teach us a bit more about what happened during the Zamorak retreat. :) We all know you could win. I kinda saw it and thought of this thread and your stories.

What sucks is that Saradomin Strikes is member's only. Now I have to write from the perspective of Zamorak. I see nothing wrong with Zamorak, but I really hate Saradomin (in a good way)and wanted a chance to write about his forces.
However, I agree, Riekan should try it.

Hey thanks guys! I'll have to look into the contest, Toby. It might be fun to give it a try, but things are crazy here right now so I'll see if I have time. As for adds here, I am healty again and my writing will resume. More adds will be coming in the near future!

Boss Hog, I'm not going to answer that... but I will say that there is a distinct possibility ;)

Artemis was shaking, and suddenly, Daigan noticed that she was crying. His anger shattered, and suddenly he felt the full weight of guilt again; guilt for pretty much everything he had done over the past several days.

“I know more than you would think, you jerk,” Artemis replied through her tears. “You want to know how my parents were killed? They were captured and slaughtered by goblins.” She turned and stormed off into the dark woods, leaving Daigan to comprehend the weight of her words.

Daigan slumped down to the ground beside the fire. His hand trembled with his shock, both from the ordeal and from Artemis’s revelation. How could he have said all that to her?

The Sage still sat motionless in front of the fire. He was looking nowhere in particular, and it was almost as though he were in a trance.

“Are you not going to leave too?” Daigan lashed out, bitterly.

“No, I believe I will stay,” Zharoun replied. “I am more…sympathetic than Artemis. Not to mention quite a bit wiser.”

Daigan was puzzled. “What do you mean?”

“I mean that, regardless of the evils you have done, I can still see you for what you are.”

“And that is?”

“You, Daigan, are a good person at heart, but one that lost himself to hatred."

Daigan looked down at the Sage, the cool blue eyes of the old man gazing up at him with an unreadable haze. Daigan thought back to Artemis's anger and sadness, and he felt similar emotions burn beneath his skin. "You don't know me at all," Daigan replied.

"Wrong," Zharoun said quickly. "I know you better than you know yourself. I am a Zarosian, remember?"

Daigan stumbled over to the fire, and he plopped wearily down beside it. "What does that have to do with anything?"

"You are not aware of the story of Zaros. He was the last Emperor of the Northern Empire in the Second Age. He was also made a god by the deity Armadyl."

"Yeah, I get it," Daigan replied. "What's the point?"

"Listen to me," Zharoun replied sharply. "I will make my point in due time. First, however, you must know about the man that was Zaros. He began as a human, an exceptionally powerful human. From the moment of his birth, he controlled Mahjarrat magic."

"Mahjarrat?" Daigan asked, but still he looked impassive.

"They are a race that hail from another dimension, known as Freneskae. Zaros was granted their abilities, and soon he used it to fight the very race that gave it to him. He defeated the last Mahjarrat Emperor, Raldeir, and brought freedom to many humans across the continent. He succeeded in stabilizing the Empire, however, only for a short time. Soon, rebellion sparked within his society. Unbeknownst to the Emperor, the General Zamorak was the lead conspirator."

"I've heard this story before..."

Zharoun frowned. "I have already made myself heard. Wait and my point shall be evident. I realize that what happened has left you shaken, but please listen to me."

Daigan nodded. He bowed his head, feeling even more shame for antagonizing the last person that was willing to sit at the campfire beside him.

"Zamorak managed to catch Zaros off guard, and he stabbed him with the Staff of Armadyl. As a result, Zaros's godly powers morphed Zamorak's soul, causing him to become a god as well. Now, Zaros managed to escape his burning castle, leaving behind the bodies of his family, friends, and the last remnants of his empire. He was a broken man, and he burned with only one goal."

Zharoun lowered his gaze. Daigan was paying full attention, and he knew what Zharoun was going to say even before the old man said it. As the wind cut through the trees around them, Zharoun raised his head again. "In his hatred, he swore revenge on Zamorak at any cost.

"The cost was great, as it usually is with revenge. Zaros took refuge within the city of Ghorrock, the last city in the Empire that stood against Zamorak's army. As Zamorak arrived at the gates, Zaros took up his magic. He was fueled by hatred and anger, and he lost control, giving in to his rage. His attack leveled the city, killing everyone within it. He did not allow time for the city to evacuate. He sacrificed his very people for his revenge, and it was a revenge that failed. He did not kill Zamorak. This final act has earned him the moniker of the Empty Lord, to this very day."

"He killed his own people?"

"They were a necessary sacrifice, or so he thought. I told you that he did not know what he was doing. He was carried by rage, anger, and a need for revenge. When he suffered such emotions, he lost control of himself. His mind did not decide to level Ghorrock, his anger did. However, even with the course of these final hours, Zaros was a good person. In all things before the night of Zamorak’s rebellion, he only wanted what was best for his people.”

Daigan remained silent, and Zharoun examined him carefully. “You are very much like Zaros, I can see it. In time, Artemis will as well.”

“She won’t,” Daigan replied. “I’d be surprised if she even came back.”

Zharoun chuckled. “Life is full of surprises, Daigan.”

Daigan turned and looked out into the dark woods where Artemis had gone. There was no sound or movement in the shadowy trees, and the world felt increasingly lonely beyond the fire-lit clearing.

“You have chosen a dark path for yourself, Daigan,” said the Sage, and Daigan turned back to look at him. “Do not follow it any further, or you will lose yourself entirely.”

Daigan thought about the Sage’s words, and the darkness closed in on him. He was suddenly watching himself kill Randall Malden again this time as an outside observer, and as the dagger pierced the young boy’s chest, he saw a glimmer of evil lurking behind his eyes.
