Distant yelling was no surprise in the crowded city – not even at this time of day in this part of town. What caught Adria’s attention was – in conjunction with said yelling – the abrupt disappearance of two life forces. What particularly interested her was the proximity of the two lost forces to two deviant forces. They were disturbing and quite unlike any others she’d sensed recently. Whatever blessing or curse that God or the devil had bestowed upon them was frightening and unkind. Yet nevertheless Adria had to investigate. For in this world without answers, she knew that simply watching and waiting was not the will of The Lord.

The reaper tumbled from her rooftop perch, landing gracefully on the filthy pavement of the alley and quickly whirled around to the front of the building. She swept past hardly a passerby or two on her way toward the door, which she subsequently burst through with righteous vigor. On the other side -

The lobby was marred with red, littered with papers, and adorned in jostled furniture. Behind the counter was a fiendish man coated crimson and filling his pockets. By the hall was another, still and silent on the red-washed floor.

Adria staggered backward, hit with the metallic scent of suffering as she struggled to make sense of the scene.

“Wh-what…?” she remarked instinctively, not prepared nor conditioned to expect or to navigate such a situation. Her humanly instincts were to turn and flee – to run or hide or escape somehow. Yet she hadn’t come here simply to run. God had drawn her here. Why had he done so?

Adria fortified herself, praying internally as she braced to do The Lord’s work.

“What happened here?!” the reaper demanded, her child-like voice cracking under the attempt to project authority. Her stance was rigid, but inside she was unprepared and outside she was shaking.

“Huh?” Simon’s tunnel vision was broken. There at the door stood -

“The fuck are you supposed to be?” Simon replied, unimpressed with the sight. She could easily be his type, but her outfit was bizarre even to the man who’d been sipping blood most the night. Under what looked like a trench coat was something that appeared to be a few steps up from a two-piece bathing suit, and each piece of her outfit was an impressive shade of black.

Simon paused as he considered the situation just long enough for a smile to creep across his face. Whatever oddities befell this girl hardly mattered now – to Simon she was just another target.

“Oh, right.” the man said with a blink and a high-handed shrug “Let me just explain...” he trailed off, throwing himself over the counter and soaring across the room to Adria, hands outstretched for her long, pretty neck…

-

Adria’s eyes widened only to close as she reeled back, turning away and throwing her hands up with a surprised yelp. Nothing happened for what felt like a long second, and subsequently her eyes opened again only for her to see that Simon was still mid-lunge. Adria was shocked to realize that she still had plenty of time to react, and positioned her now raised hands to catch her attacker by the wrists.

Both of them were shocked, now grappling in an unexpected struggle. Adria had never anticipated just how quick her new body was. Simon could never have predicted it. Neither would have expected her immense strength. No longer was she a frail and puny bookworm. Now, caught at odds with a much larger man, she felt no difficulty in restraining his arms.

“Wh-what are you doing?” she asked, with her woefully unthreatening voice.

-

The look of shock was quickly seared off Simon’s face by frustration as he caught his bearings. He was no mere man and he wasn’t about to take this from some mere girl. With a fierce growl he threw his arms out to break her hold, ducked low, and then launched another attempt at her neck.

The result was the same. Adria caught his wrists with ease.

Simon roared in fury, baring a frightening set of fangs. Ignoring his bound hands, he lunged forward to try and bite the girl’s neck.

Adria was just as quick to react, releasing his wrists and catching him by the sides of his head.

“Get away!” she yelled, pushing him head-first away from her and across the room.

Simon tumbled backward, crashing through the counter and onto the floor.

“Shit!” he swore, whirling to his feet again and glaring across the room at his assailant. He was right back where he started, and even though the young woman opposite him looked and sounded harmless, the two were definitely not evenly matched.

GET IN HERE AND STOP HER, YOU WORTHLESS BITCH! ” Simon shouted, eyes whirling around the room for a plan.

No sooner did he finish his command than the door burst open once more, giving way to Simon’s nameless companion who was quick to grab Adria from behind. She was incapable of ignoring Simon’s orders, and brutally quick in following them. It was a benefit he hadn’t gotten used to since he’d spent most of the previous night trying to get away from her after their date-gone-wrong.

“H-hey!” Adria exclaimed. She resisted, but couldn’t gain an advantage with the position she was in.

“Good little bitch.” Simon grinned again, suddenly confident again now that things were going his way.

He dusted himself off as he casually crossed the room – a wasted effort on his tattered and blood-soaked clothes. He looked down on Adria ravenously, now certain that she couldn’t stop his bite.

“Hold her steady and I might save you some.” Simon said to his valiant servant before leaning in for Adria’s neck.

“N-no, stop!” she protested, fighting and failing to break the vampire’s grasp.

Simon stopped.

His eyes met Adria’s.

Her crimson irises were brighter than blood, and deeper than the night-stained ocean. Transfixed, he saw in them-

A look of pure terror took over his face.

“You’re-”

“NOBODY MOVE!”

“HANDS UP, ON YOUR KNEES ALL OF YOU!” a battalion of police swarmed into the room from the many other entrances, guns trained on the three by the door.

The vampire woman shuddered uncertainly.

Adria let out a relieved sigh.

Simon tore himself away from Adria’s gaze and eyed the advancing officers.
