Adria had felt just fine before now, but the gleaming rays of the rising sun reminded her that she hadn’t slept all night. A stray wave of exhaustion drifted across her body, but still wasn’t enough to convince her.
She was alone here on the rooftop, albeit surrounded by the groaning wake of the crowded city. Even here on the outskirts it felt overcrowded – something Adria had never truly considered until now; now that she could sense them. Countless auras flowed through her from all directions. There were good ones and bad; those that attracted her, and those that she found repulsive.
She still didn’t know what any of it meant. She also didn’t know why she was being followed. The same aura from Central Park the previous night was periodically popping up at the edge of her range. It would appear and disappear almost immediately, but she was certain that it was the same aura each time.
If she tried to move toward its last location, it would reappear from a completely different direction. She could never catch it no matter how quickly she moved, and it always popped up again behind her, or off to the side. It must have been toying with her… but why?
She still hadn’t told Oliver.
Oliver had insisted on getting new clothes and finding a place to stay for the night. It was what had ultimately brought them to this part of town. In the end, Adria had split away from him. He was still close enough for her to sense, but she didn’t feel comfortable spending the night with him and especially not on his dollar.
Adria sighed, kicking her feet lazily against the building she sat atop. What was she supposed to do? She looked completely human, but not like her old self. Could she really just go back to her parents like this and tell them what had happened? After everything?
No. Not yet.
