Only about an hour to the deadline. Okay, thanks Ogdred. When I saw your name the other day I thought about asking if you won one, but it seems to have eluded me. I'll fix that up.

Thanks for your entries; I'll get to reviewing the ones posted.

Alright, guys, with less than an hour left, my second entry. I don't believe I'm cutting it so close, again. Inspiration comes at the most inconvenient times...

A Prayer and a Wish

WintryElf

We gazed upon this house wistfully only ten years ago. The cheap ochre wood in the walls and floors did nothing to faze us. You worked at the palace, up to your nose in musty scrolls and old texts, earning a meagre sum, as I sold some of our belongings in the marketplace to scrounge up what I could. You were so cute and charming – a handsome young man, brown hair falling roguishly across your cheeks, old but strong clothes fitting your slim body so well. We loved each other so much.

When we sat down together, after months of scrimping, and working, and trying so hard, and we counted our coins, and we finally had enough – how our hearts filled with joy! I will never forget the look on your face as you capered about the room, and picked me up in your strong arms, and swung me around, not caring about what others thought or saw.

You gave me a locket that day. A beautiful, heart-shaped locket wrought from silver, with ornate tendrils of fragile metal cascading down from it in rippling waves.

“Elda. Bring me a beer.”

Your hoarse growl of a voice resonates throughout the little rooms of our old house. I walk down the stairs to the barrel of ale, passing stained, burnt walls. The little building reeks of smoke.

I press the glass into your hands. You wave me away.

Isn’t it time that we stopped this? You promised that it was just with friends. Why did we fall this far?

I stop walking.

“Donovan.”

“Leave me,” you rumble, your voice slightly slurred.

“When will you stop drinking?”

“Did I give you permission to speak to me?” you roar, springing up from your chair.

“We need money to eat, Donovan,” I say, carefully, coaxingly. “It can’t all go to drink.”

“And why can’t it?” you growl, advancing on me.

“Donovan, please. Stop coming closer. I don’t want to look at you and see this hulking mass, with the stench of beer wafting from between your teeth. I don’t want to starve every night, wondering what I can sell to afford enough food to feed us. I want to love you so much, but I just don’t know how anymore.”

A slap echoes through the room. My blotchy, red cheek stings sharply. I push at your chest, but to no avail.

Stop forcing yourself onto me.

Stop it, please.

You grasp the tarnished silver chain at my neck, the locket hidden beneath my rough old dress.

“No, Donovan, please don’t-“

My response is cut off as he jerks his arm violently, snapping the delicate silver. He flings it behind him, where it smashes into the wall and splits in two.

A broken scream rips from my throat, echoing around the house. The tears finally escape my eyes, running in pleading waves down my thin, dirty face.

Another slap.

You grab and pull at my hair.

I don’t want to fight you.

I’ll give anything, just please go back to the way you were.
Please, Saradomin. Let me return to when we bought this house, and Donovan was still the same. I’ll do anything and everything to stop this.

My head clicks against the wall. My vision dims.

I just want to love you again.

But you’ve broken me.

The hilt is cold, my hands numb.

The rusty knife whistles through the air and carves a swift tear in your neck.

I’ll do anything.

The knife embeds itself in my stomach.

I’ll do everything.

I wish you still remembered how much I love you.

And that's it! Good luck again, everyone. ^^
