The pleasant calm of the river soon faded away to yet more disarray, though not nearly as much as the night before, as Conleth stepped off the boat and onto the bank of the Elopa, eyeing the village before them.

He tried to ignore the myriad characters and commotions going on, although not paying attention to the dark armoured knight’s rather dramatic entrance was by no means easy. Instead, he opted to listen to the group’s leader, who seemed to be calculating the best course of action.

It seemed they had two options. Naturally, Conleth would have much preferred going straight into the forest; he was much more at home in such an environment. Had he been alone, he would be making his way already, across the tree-branches. However, instead, he chose to stay silent. Traversing the forest may be the more suitable option for himself, but, having relatively little experience of being in a party, he had no idea what the best plan would be for them collectively.

On my own, once again

Her escape from the town on the previous night had been as uneventful as she had hoped it would be, nobody stopping her from walking out and starting her trek. It was fortunate, as she had lacked any energy to do more than walk slowly outwards. Had anyone been chasing her, she would have been caught before she had made it to the town outskirts.

The lack of interruption allowed her to make it a few miles out before she found a small hollow to curl up in. Despite the amount of time she had spent sleeping in beds, the years that she had been sleeping on the road kicked her old habits back in and made the ground feel less uncomfortable than it may have been to a normal person. She knew that there would likely be many more nights like this as well, and so she may as well put herself back in the habit of sleeping on the road.

Although she was exhausted, she did not go to sleep until she had woven a net of magic around her small campsite. Her net had begged permission from the land and air, and with the blessing of the world there was very little that would be able to or would want to disturb her rest. Only powerful magic, woven with the intent to find her, would have been of any avail. A protection granted by the world, using the natural magic that would not be obvious to one looking for magical anomalies, was safer than most things one could weave for their protection.

As expected, she woke in the morning a bit sore but otherwise unbothered. To her surprise and great relief, there had been no dreams, no reliving of the events of the previous night. That had been the last thing that she had needed, as she would already have plenty of time to go over what had happened in her head while she walked. The trip would be long, after all, and now that she was no longer with a group there would be nothing to interrupt her contemplation.

Under her head, the pillow shifted with a snuffle, and she realized that she had been sleeping with her head on Robnoxious. She couldn't remember whether that had happened before she had gone to sleep or not - or more accurately, she couldn't remember him lying down there in the first place - but she couldn't deny that this was much more comfortable than placing her head on the ground. About to give him a scratch on the head to show her appreciation, Siera stopped, as he was still sleeping and she did not want to disrupt that.

The flute, which had rejoined her when she was most of the way out of the town, had tucked itself into the belt sheath attached to the thin leather strap Siera had removed from around her waist and placed aside before going to sleep. It was still there now, but slid out and floated up to her as she rose from the ground. While there wasn't any reason an instrument should need rest, Siera couldn't deny that it seemed to take periods of rest where it seemed mostly unaware of what was going on around it. It was odd, but at the same time she felt better because of it. It was one of the many things that made the flute seem more like a living being and less like an instrument that could just do tricks.

It whistled quietly, but that was enough to rouse the hellpup from its slumber as well. Yawning, Robnoxious put his feet back under him and got up, yawning again once on his feet. Now Siera gave him a scratch behind the ears, and the momentary closing of his eyes and the slight lift of his muzzle told her that he appreciated it. Whether he knew what it was for was another thing, but that really didn't matter since she did care for the hellpup anyways.

Taking her hand back and using both to brush the dirt off of herself that may have collected there over the night, Siera gave just a nod to the flute.

She wasn't sure what she was answering, as the question was one that she could give a broad variety of answers to right now, but a nod seemed to be the best one she could do that would answer in the most useful way. They were continuing on, and she wasn't in bad shape, even after everything that had happened.

Siera wanted to believe that she had heard and seen wrong, but everything she had seen indicated that one of their group had summoned Azul and that Annie had been protecting him. Rovaan had taken a full demon form too. Kuro and Joric had appeared to be on their side, but Ethel had appeared to side with Annie. It was too much for her to want to concern herself with right now when she had more urgent things on her mind.

Then there had been the dream, the reason she was out here. That had been Soahc, for she knew his appearance, and his offer to meet the demon meant he would be where he had said. There was no reason to offer an alliance and a meeting point if one didn't intend to go there. Perhaps it was just a ruse, and he wanted to trick her into going alone, but she suspected he knew that he didn't need to use an elaborate ruse to get her there. All he had to do was say where he was going to be and she would have been there. This was the only lead she had, and she had to follow it.

The rest of the dream had been bad, too. Apart from the two demons, who she was sure would have torn her apart had she not somehow come up with whatever song she had sung and been defended by the others in the dream. That song had spoken to her in a way that only two other songs ever had. The first had been the time when she had been thrown from the Citadel, and the other had been when the Worldsong had been projected into her unshielded mind. It was a song of power, of that she was sure, but she already knew that it would be impossible to recreate if she could not sing.

Instruments were never enough to draw the true power from music, for they were a medium when song was directly from the one calling on the power.

That was unfortunate, but only because of the same reason that the lack of ability to recreate the Worldsong was. Songs of power were, at this point, the only thing she could think of that might allow her to go home. In the years that she had spent searching, nothing had come up. It wasn't that she had found something that stated how difficult it would be to go back, it was that there had been nothing at all to indicate her home even existed. There was nothing in any records she had found that indicated anyone here had ever made a trip to where her home existed, and it led her to believe that only what had brought her here could bring her back.

The Worldsong had been the first clue that that; the other Song the second. Because what she remembered from the time of her exodus had not sounded like either of those, she was convinced now that there were more and that one of those was the key. She just needed to know what she needed to sing, and then gain the ability to sing it. It might seem almost impossible given that she had discovered both Songs she knew by accident, but now that she had a clue to that it once again seemed possible that returning home might be possible once again.

It was unfortunate that she had been unable to talk to the god that Cadmus had told her they had run into after Messia...

First, though, she had to find Cadmus. Even if she figured out how to go back at this very moment, she would not go back until she could go back with him. The only thing she wanted more than to return home was to return home with the only person she truly considered a friend from this world.

She wanted to show him everything that she had described in words, everything that she remembered from so long ago. Compared to the world down here, it was completely different, the structures designed for beings that had little worry of invasion and who had millions of years to perfectly structure their homes.

Being on the road alone again was a strange feeling, one she had not thought she would be so unused to after having to be this way for years. The last year or so in Copperdale, staying in an Inn and being in the Guild, had made her unused to not being around people, and now that she was out in the middle of grasslands and farmlands with nobody else anywhere she wasn't sure if she liked it or not. Being around people that weren't bad people had been something that she had gotten used to liking, and although she appreciated the world itself like few others did that didn't mean she didn't want to have sentient company as well.

That was why, when the single traveler came into view, she did not shy away or try to hide. It was certainly a little strange that she was even coming across another person, but by the same token she supposed he would feel the same way about her. Her company was much stranger, anyways, and most normal people would stay away just because of the fact that Robnoxious existed. He even spoke to her as though there was nothing abnormal about her at all, which even gave her hope that he may not be too bothered by her own greeting.

Reaching over to her harp - which she didn't even bother taking off the hook on the belt that it hung from - she strummed it once, and the forefinger on her right hand glowed just slightly blue. Using that, she drew in the air, "
Indeed it is. Forgive me for asking before I know your name, but can you read my written words?

It might seem a bit rude in most situations, but since Siera could not communicate with the spoken word she did not want to begin an entire conversation and insult someone who could not read by acting like they could. She hoped they could, for the obvious reason of being able to talk with them. Apart from the fact that they might know something interesting, she knew little about the roads here and wanted to see if there was a faster way to where she needed to go.

The activation of her magic also inadvertantly activated her innate hearing of the melodies of everything around her. The world itself sang out to her, letting her know the base nature of what was there. It didn't give any real information, only the essence of what something was .

This included the stranger, but at the moment the most interesting thing she noticed was the flute. Last night, she had not noticed what the instrument had been emitting - perhaps because she had been playing it at the time - but now that she did it sounded...strange. It sounded as though it was trying to play a song, but did not know the correct order of the notes or the volume and speed it was supposed to be playing at. Only one refrain sounded correct, and the noise made her feel as though she was being wrapped in a protective shield. The musician had no idea what this meant, but like with every other melody she heard it made her feel a little different about the one it was about.

Return to the March

The mechanical creature may have ended up near Soahc, but it would have nothing to do with Kira guiding him for the simple reason that she wasn’t going to do that. Although she did*’t speak to Ryokin when he called out to her, he got his answer in the form of fiery letters in the ground in front of him.

Do it yourself.

He could be as impressed as he wanted with her, but she was far from being impressed with his antics. Summoning demons in the middle of the town for no practical reason at all - and bringing something like this into the world - was not a good way to ensure success for what they were supposed to be doing, and she did*’t care if this would add another being that may have power to the retinue. Demons weren’t creatures to trust with the success of grand-scale plans unless those plans were their own, and Ryokin’* actions right here proved that.

Nothing else happened for the rest of the assault, save for one thing right at the end. As she saw Soahc, along with Ubaid, Brodus, and a third individual whom she assumed was their reason for being here, leave the building, a sound echoed through the air. It wasn’t fully recognizable, but enough of it sounded right that Kira could only assume it was a sound of mirth. In a town that had been hit like this one, that was disturbing, even more so because it seemed to come from where Soahc had just left yet was not caused by him.

-----

It was somewhat of a pity to leave behind a town that did not have flames rising from every building, but in the time that it had taken them to leave she had taken the opportunity to set at least half of the place on fire. Her methods weren’t too important, as they all ended with the buildings, and possibly those inside the buildings, burning to ashes. Suffice to say, the flaming phoenix that had flown above the town that night had left an inferno in her wake, and hopefully none would forget about it anytime soon.

The transformation back into her more desirable human form had taken place when they were leaving, and was much less of a show than the original transformation had been. Shifting forms did**t require a grand entrance like what she had done in the town square, but that did*’t mean she did*’t like to do such things.

To her dismay, although she showed it not, the demonic creature that Ryokin had summoned was along as well, and she made sure to stay clear of the copious amount of blood it was leaving behind. She would provide it no guiding, either, since she was not in the service of any demon and did not answer to them. She trusted it less than everyone else, too, and since she did*’t trust anyone else at all, one could say she was just looking for an excuse to destroy the damned abomination.

Still, none of this showed, and she remained, on the outside, her normal self. The only action she made that indicated a disagreement with a decision was the immolation of the blood flying at the singer. Like always, she did*’t bother to make any gestures to bring the fire into being, and did*’t even look at what she was doing, but the blood that was flying at the mouth of the singer evaporated before it made it anywhere close.

Even if she had not disagreed with such a pointless decision, the song was somewhat fun to listen to. It did*’t have nearly enough about her in it - since in her mind it should be at least fifty percent about her - but it was amusing to hear nonetheless.

She paid little attention to the ramblings of the demon, only listening because it was speaking in her general vicinity. Nearly everything he said was completely pointless, riddles that seemed to indicate he wanted something that she did*’t see why he did not just say outright.

Why search for someone to assist you and then launch into minutes-long, vague riddles about what that help entailed?

The wink from Sileo was much more interesting, and it was a pity that the man seemed to be vanishing before he could get anything done. That made it interesting, though, and she gave him the reply of, “
If you think that was fire…
” before giving his wink a grin in response and turning back to the direction they were going.

Time to Hunt

Kat actually felt a bit sorry for Alania, although only because she recognized how idealistic the girl was - far too much, really - and knew that her actions were because she was trying to see good in everything. Without seeing whatever they had seen, she only knew what Charles had said of it, and what he had said sounded...bad. She did*’t have personal experience with demons - not in the sense of fighting them, anyways - but it did*’t seem to her like any creature who wanted to make the world a torture chamber was worthy of redemption. Those were the people that were killed as soon as possible so innocents weren’t caught in their crosshairs.

Still, she did what she could to make the young woman not feel like she was about to be set upon by religious zealots. The two of them had been comrades in a rather nasty situation before, and although they weren’t friends Kat knew more about Alania than most other people here. To her, it was clear that Alania wasn’t intending to be a bad person. In fact, it was just the opposite, but that was even more of a problem. If she was a bad person, then the solution would be simple, but a good person doing stupid things was a bit more difficult to correct.
