"AZULLLLLLL!"

The war-cry pierced the night and was certain to rally the others- but it also gave away the position of the attacker. A paw-like appendage swung out from the contorting mass of obscene limbs, seizing the thrown axe and swinging it around to come crashing into Br'nard's sword with a mighty clangour.

Eyes that saw in all angles took in the attackers. Azul had not possessed a corporeal form since Copperdale, but had not departed from this world entirely- living as a parasite inside Kuro's body even as Kuro himself began to absorb more and more of the elder demon's power. It had observed them all through his eyes, seen their fighting styles, but even better- it remembered them from before.

Malicious delight struck the demon as it recalled Joric, whose enchanted shield had been used to open a small portal to Hell. The dwarf was however unarmed, and therefore that trick could not be played again. As for the Even'star, Azul knew him from even further back. The Caller of the Hordes might have been Elder, but it was not Eldest. There was one greater, more powerful, the first great evil- He who resides in the deepest bowels of the hottest hell, to whom all demons must pay homage. This barbarian had marked himself for death by interfering in The Demon Lord's plans, and had been sealed in Hell to suffer for all eternity.

"
The Harbinger's wench,
" said the elder demon in recollection. A pincer the size of a scythe pricked up to pluck out the heart of the trouble-making Kal'Sean, but- but something was amiss.

Anger filled the demon's scarred soul as it felt Kuro begin to draw Him back into the half-demon's body. The two were intrinsically linked, and the boy was abusing that link now to draw Him back into His prison. The boy had learnt too much!

Azul had wished to drain Kuro's own demonic energy from him and solidify His rebirth, but between Kuro's mastery of Azul's own magic and the various combatants converging upon Him, there was slight chance of that happening. Knowing that resistance was futile, that a better method would have to be found, Azul did not resist Kuro's absorption, turning from solid to smoke and vapour once more, just in time for Annie's energy bolt to come careening past- through the elder demon's body, and crashing into a charging Etheldredda. The hagspawn was lifted bodily and tossed across the room, crashing through tables and chairs before landing limp in a corner.

That the Elder Demon's return would be foiled by a dwarf's chance hunger pang- inconceivable! In this ghostly form, Azul could not hope to defend from Kuro's energy drain, but similarly could not drain Kuro and become fully formed whilst facing off various adversaries. He needed more power than one half-demon could give, He would have to have a whole slew of demons at hand to reach His full potential-

Upstairs, Siera's hellhound howled out in pain as Azul began to reform, cackling all the while.

But it wasn't just the innocent Robnoxious that Azul was drawing power from. The essence of demons was all around this room- in Rovaan, whose transformation back into human form could not mask his blighted heritage, and in Siera, who had herself brought the energy of demons into herself back in Messia, and had those devilish powers flowing through her veins. They would feel pain- yes, for having one's own essence torn from their souls was an experience few could stomach, and the more they hurt the weaker they would get, and the quicker Azul's ascendancy would be accomplished.

Already the demon was thickening, blotting, changing from smoke and shadow to a solid being once more. Kuro's attempts barely hindered Azul now, for He could draw power from multiple sources at once, counteracting the efforts of the one who had originally sealed Him away.

"
Demons and hags and,
" the demon spared a mocking glance at Br'nard, "
Child murderers. Is this what makes for heroism these days? I'm surprised you haven't tried recruiting me!
" What was happening? Azul never joked before. Had Azul even spoke before? The continual attachment to Kuro was doing something to the elder demon, changing Him in some way, a twisted way which the demon lord detested.

"
The dwarf killed more at Copperdale than I! And you, Annie, you are meant to be 'the Abolisher'! Freer of slaves! Tell me, who wears more shackles than demonkind? Humans with dark souls summon us and force us to kill, yet we are persecuted for events we have no control over! All of you are beneath me, sinners and halfbreeds! You may fight me, and you will die, or you may let me leave this place, and in return I shall slaughter your enemies. The hags? Soahc the Deceiver? I am Elder, it would be like swatting a fly.

Espionage

Father of Evil

Soahc the Deceiver went forward with a gleeful hop- so far away from the action yet so expectant of the enjoyment it would bring. He barely needed to keep on his shapeshifted disguise, for every guard and adventurer in the town were now pooling towards the centre, where the sounds of gunpowder and spellforging pierced the night- oh, and that of crumbling mortar and splintering wood, as both houses and the once-floating wreckage of John Black's flagship succumbed to the damage dealt in their collision.

But no- no, he could not go. Soahc had plans this time. Though usually content in simply meddling in the lives of kings of peasants alike, once every few centuries the demigod of chaos would envision a much grander form of villainy. Even chaos had to reigned in, for without withholding his base urges, Soahc would not be able to accomplish his much grander scheme, one which was certain to change the face of Engelain forever.

Though the plan was to meet the others in the centre, that seemed like suicide now. Not suicide in the literal sense- Soahc was beyond the means of mortal men to kill. But suicide of the idea, of the plan, of the stroke of genius that would be spoken about in the histories for generations to come. Instead, the demigod assumed he would simply continue the plan alone, of going to the building that was their real target, and if any of the others survived they could continue on to their true destination.

It was upon considering this thought that the millennia-old criminal gave pause, for there was something tugging at the back of his mind... No, not tugging, inviting . An ethereal force was calling on the astral plane, something powerful. This was dream weaving, a very abstract branch of magic, and Soahc had not felt such mastery of the art in centuries.

Too curious to resist the temptation, the demigod slipped into the form of a snake, slid down a drain, and dreamt...

The Black Knight

Brodus's pre-emptive shielding was well planned, for not a moment later was the room buffeted by a raging gale emerging from the stairwell, throwing parchment and stationery everywhere, and following this gust of wind into the room was the air elemental, cutting a graceful path through the storm of its own creation.

Perhaps seeing the futility of its attack, or else longing for a more satisfying end to the life of the one that had evaded it, the air elemental dashed forwards, the fingers on its detached hands elongating to form great claws- the first flew out like a spear to shatter the man's shield, the second followed quickly after in an attempt to rip apart the armour that the invader wore, the two appendages followed shortly behind by the rest of the elemental's body, its eyes revealing a tranquil fury.

Town Centre: Total Carnage

Kira's erroneously-aimed blasts of fire rocketed out towards the charging knights, who did as best as they could to split- but the main disadvantage of such a tight-knit cavalry charge was that it was difficult to disassemble once ranks were formed; especially when you had two lines of lancers. A horrific scream signalled the explosion of a horse, making guts and gore rain down as another blast caught a knight square in the chest before exploding, and yet enough the cobbled streets. The ground beneath blasted upwards, charred rocks peppering down on the combatants as the knights were either set aflame or thrown bodily from their horses- which were bolting away from the magical fires, their speedy retreat aided by primal fear and leading them to trample on an inattentive stage hand.

Still, some of their number were little more than bruised by this, and almost half a dozen had managed to remain ahorse, (those who had been at the back of the scrum and therefore had less trouble escaping the oncoming volleys,) And now the reinforcements were beginning to appear, mages and heroes, barbarians and rangers, eastern warriors and half-elves. The wealthy lord of this town had graciously offered funds to the usual rabble of adventurers to defend the streets and now they were all coming to the first sign of trouble, leaving their posts unguarded as adventurer's were never known to be able to hold down a real job.

They were undisciplined and reckless, and none of them anywhere near the skill of Cirion who was a seasoned fighter, yet they were plentiful. And with Kira targeting the knights and John Black skirmishing with the wand-wielding elf, and Ryokin pondering upon the death of orphanages and puppies, it would seem that the villains were both utterly distracted and completely outnumbered.

The Necromancer

Ubaid the Undying was well served by the actions of his contemporaries, drawing the attention of the town's defences towards the centre. With little encounters he managed to snake his way through the skulking shadows of back alleys, using his knowledge of the void of magic that he had earlier sensed to arrive at quite a bizarrely out-of-place structure.

It was uniquely built from white brick, which immediately made it pronounced in comparison to the rest of the inadequately cared-for buildings around it. It was octagonal in shape, at the centre of a square in an otherwise unremarkable town of identical houses. The roof was flat and slightly larger in diameter than the building it sat upon, the excess mass being held up by polished columns.

Despite the columns, it was somewhat apparent that this was a building of recent construction, no more than a century in age. By coincidence the armoured ghost had arrived at the side with the front entrance- double doors of mahogany, and above it sitting a great circular plate, made from a gold-imitating material. Engraved within this was the symbols of many religions and deities; the half moon and blazing sun, the sceptre-sword of Tyrrus, an etching of The Great Stallion, a staff atop which sat an uncanny depiction of Soahc's deformed grin, and many more besides, both religions from within Engelain and without- the harsh gods of the frozen northern continent and the burning southern continent which few Engelites ever lived to see.

Though there was once most likely guards outside this building, currently it sat undefended, though lights were on within, showing that whoever lived within this place was at least somewhat aware of the dangers lurking outside...

The Hive

"No...Wait! Come back here!" Snarled out Ethyl, as the monstrosity she had been engaged in combat with mere moments before decided to turn around and go for a leisurely stroll in the opposing direction. Lifting a hand and muttering an incantation, the hag leader was a few seconds away from obliterating the swarm outright for the sheer audacity of its departure before seeing where it was heading- towards the town that Soahc was currently assaulting.

Muttering profanities and understanding now that this Hive might actually be one of the demigod's pets, or else at least part of the plan, the hag refrained from continuing the battle, not willing to risk a reprimand from the Bloodgift. Instead she let the beast- or perhaps beasts was a better term- go. Up the hill it would find a breach in the walls where John Black had flown his enchanted ship through, though scaling a wall might not be so difficult for something made up of winged insects anyway...

Encampment of the Empire

"Immediately," answered Decan Martha to Alicia's question, a spark in her eye that could only be chalked up to religious fervour. "Auxiliary, make a round of the camp and tell everyone to have everything disassembled and packed for sunrise, and their blades honed. If the demon is bleeding then perhaps it's weakened, and even if not, it is our duty as soldiers of the empire to seen its scourge banished from the earth."

"Tha'll be your funeral," Karstone pointed out.

"If Tyrrus wills it," responded the decan, her voice an honest conveyance of her lack of care about dying. "By His Grace do we live- it would be a disservice to all we hold dear to us to allow this demon the chance to murder and destroy. Citizens may cower in fear, but an imperial strikes with the sword of the Lord Himself."

Karstone shrugged, apparently deciding the decan was a lost cause, and turned to Alania instead. "Yah've got a good 'eart, kid, but it's gonna lead yah to your own doom. There ain't no such thing as a good demon. Either it'll kill yah, or else these imperials will gut yah when you try an' keep the demon as a pet."

"The greatest demons are those which we fight within ourselves," said Alania, and believing that vague and faux-deep comment to be enough to solidify her point, she turned away from the old man and Alicia.

"Alania Clarke," she told Kat, releasing the grip from her hand and standing besides her pre-emptively for her sweep of the camp. On voyages she had introduced herself to captains John Black and Ryle Emeraldian as Alania Clarke of Engelain- she'd even introduced herself to Alicia in that way as well, but just now it was becoming apparent to her that it was somewhat redundant when they were all currently within Engelain. "I wasn't aware you were from the empire. What brought you here?"

Karstone turned away as well, shaking his head as he did. He'd been of the idealistic sort as well, some twenty-five years ago, and that had ended in blood and misery. Pragmatism was the key; recognising the world for what it was, and not as what you wished it would be. Karstone could see some of that same rational thinking in Alicia, which had already singled her out as the one Karstone would wish to continue this journey with, (her being eye-candy only adding to the appeal,) except maybe Sir Charles, for the two had a shared past, though Karstone was not quite sure the shabby knight recalled it. Besides, he seemed to be having a nap at the minute, so there was little time for chit-chat.

"Well, y' 'eard her," Karstone said, sending a thumb in the decan's direction. "Overstayed our welcome, so it seems. Bes' be gettin' out o' here soonish, afore she gives us another speech abou' the good will of Tyrrus." With an eyeroll, he began to walk towards the opposite end of the camp, where Mugwo the ogre was still finding entertainment in cracking rocks with his weapon.

In the opposite direction strolled Kat and Alania, who frowned at the snoozing knight- how could one go to sleep at a time of excitement such as this? She reached out to the man's shoulder to shake him awake, unaware of a building sensation in the back of her skull, until the two touched, and suddenly her mind burst into flaming action, her eyes fluttered, and Alania went cascading into a world of dreams...

Playroom

The sound of torture, the rushing of blood, the tearing of flesh and the flaying of skin. All around was dehumanising acts of deprivation on a grand scale, orchestrated with inconceivable complexity and bolstered by technological feats so bizarre and alien to the populace of Engelain that it was enough to send one mad from the revelation.

Luckily enough, Soahc was already quite mad to begin with.

"I love what you've done with the place," he said amicably, wiping some crusted blood off of the side of a prison bar and putting it to his lips. Though this was a dream world that was not his own, the demigod felt no fear, for abstract magic was his own speciality. Such an unusual branch of magic used so skilfully after so long since anyone had ever bothered to dabble in it had caught the Deceiver's attention- for he needed to know if this piece was one which he could move for his own benefit, or one which needed to be eradicated from the board entirely.

"Not my cup of tea though. A bit too... Orderly, for my liking." He flicked at the bar of one of the holding pens and it flickered precariously in and out of existence, before solidifying as soon as a massive rush towards the newly-made exit occurred. Turning away from the misery and the blood, Soahc sought out the dream weaver, or any other occupants of this timeless plane who, like him, had been pulled into this mess.

A brief glimpse of a blue flash put the demigod on edge- did they know about the vial? But it was gone as soon as it started, and instead Soahc saw a man in armour, and fading from his own position he emerged besides Sir Charles of Richton.

"Hello knight," he said fondly, grinning his sadist grin as he went to poke the man's cheek- and then retreating his hand as he felt his fingers begin to welt and burn. "A true knight," Soahc clarified, nodding in appreciation. So it was not just a gathering of the doomed and damned.
