Her skills as a huntress had granted her nearly everything that would be useful for the job of a scout, and her lack of care about being paid made her an even more desireable choice. She wasn’t sure what she was hoping to find, but assisting the Church that she believed in accomplish anything seemed more useful than siting around and praying while hoping for a miracle.

Sighing, the huntress came to a halt as a new smell filled her nostrils. She sniffed again, a grimace coming to her lips as she recognized one of the most basic scents for one on the hunt; blood. It was coming from nearby, but she had heard nothing to indicate there was a fight and there had been no signs that something injured had been moving around nearby. It was unlikely that she would have missed such a thing, either, and that both worried and intrigued her. If there was something strange going on, she needed to find it out before she returned to the camp.

The scent led her to what was certainly blood, but blood that appeared to be dripping from the treetops above. Placing her spear and the captain’s greatcoat that she still wore at the base, Kat scaled the tree, leaping from branch to branch with grace and precision. The top of the tree wasn’t far, and it took her only a small amount of time to make it up. The blood trail had indeed originated there, but it seemed that it hadn’t come from on the tree itself. The way it was positioned seemed to tell her that it had come from above, in the air, but that made no sense either as there was nothing around that would have dropped it.

Climbing back down, she examined the pool on the ground, and realized quickly that there was something wrong with this blood. Up close, it did not smell or look like the blood of any animal she recognized, and although it almost seemed human it was not quite right. Only one thing was actually clear, and that was that the blood was from something that was old.

There was nothing that she had seen in the forest up to this point that would fit that category, and so it meant there was something new here that they had not seen before.

Her curiosity piqued, Kat picked up her spear and put the coat back around her shoulders before setting off in the direction the source of the blood appeared to be going. It had left a pretty clear trail - namely, that of blood - and that made following it easy. The problem was that she had no idea what she was following, so for all she knew this could be leading her to something far beyond her capabilities. Still, she wanted to know what new creature had entered the area before reporting back to the camp, and all she needed to do was get a good look at what it was.

She had been walking for perhaps a minute when there was a massive crashing noise in the forest ahead, accompanied by a guttural scream that she recognized as belonging to an ogre. Increasing her pace, the huntress began running. This ogre might be able to tell her what was going on, since the blood falling had not been that of an ogre and therefore it was likely this ogre had become involved with whatever this new thing was.

The ogre that she found was lying in a patch of sunlight that had been let through by the hole in the forest canopy above, created by the fall that had landed him there. Although it did not seem like he had fallen from too great of a height, it had been done during movement and not from a stopped position, and his weight and size had made the fall more deadly than it may have been otherwise. At least one branch was sticking out of the skin of the creature, and the lack of movement - although not the lack of effort put into it - told her that its spine was probably broken. A large number of others likely were as well, and she could see at least one through the skin where the armor was not obscuring it.

Although looking unaware at first, the ogre’s head turned in her direction as she stepped out from the trees and approached. While she did not recognize him, it seemed that he recognized her, for no sense of hostility appeared in his eyes as she came closer. Instead, they retained a sense of panic and terror that she was sure had entered during the fall. His hands twitched, but looked to be unable to move any more than that.

*
What happened? What dropped you here?
” she asked, kneeling down next to the ogre’s head. It did*’t take much for her to see that this ogre wasn’t going to be leaving this spot. His injuries were too severe for him to move, and in the time that she could find anything to deal with them he would already be dead. It was a pity, but one that she knew she couldn’t do anything about.

The ogre was silent for a long time, ragged breaths the only thing coming from between his lips. Kat remained where she was, waiting, hoping that he would be able to say anything, and finally her patience was rewarded. He said only one word, barely being able to get it out, but that one word was all she needed.

“D..***...demon.”

Kat’s eyes immediately narrowed, and she stood up, taking a step back from the ogre. If there was a demon here then things were going to get a lot more complicated quickly. Demons never showed up without causing chaos, and more chaos was the last thing this area of the world needed right now. The Decan needed to hear about this, and as soon as possible.

That just left the ogre, and although she did*’* want to Kat knew what the right thing to do was. It was going to die already, and so the only thing she could do to help it was to speed it along on that journey. The crash would already have alerted anything nearby to the presence of living creatures in this area, so more noise wouldn’t matter, and that gave her the option of taking the slightly more efficient means of sending the ogre to the next world.

Shifting the spear to her left hand, Kat reached under the coat and drew out her second weapon from the holster that was hooked over her shoulder and hanging by her side. This weapon was a pistol, but an interesting one. It had no hammer, and while the grip was made from the traditional material of wood the rest of it was not. Instead, it seemed to be made of some sort of crystal, a somewhat bluish material that looked to be chiseled into the form of the gun barrel. The only part of the gun, apart from the grip, that was not made from this crystal was a small chamber at the back of the gun, behind the barrel and where the firing chamber would normally be. It was instead made of some kind of black material that also looked crystalline in origin, and looked to be purposefully placed in a spot where the hand holding the weapon would not come into contact with it.

Intricate runic symbols covered the entire weapon, but those on the black chamber were particularly numerous. On the majority of the weapon, the runes were green-blue, but those on the chamber were white. They were all carved in some sort of magical language that Kat did not understand, but she did know that they functioned to keep the weapon operating. That was all she needed, and why she had not tried to figure them out.

Pointing the pistol at the ogre’s skull, Kat sighed and pulled the trigger. Although there was no hammer to cause a spark, there was still a crack as though one had caused the ignition of powder, and the bullet still flew out, slamming into the ogre’s skull and causing any movement that it had been doing to cease. During the firing sequence, the runes on the small black chamber at the rear of the weapon lit up a bright orange-red, and remained that way for a few seconds afterwards before dimming down to the white color that they were normally. The rest of the runes appeared to be unresponsive, perhaps fulfilling another purpose rather than the firing of the weapon.

All of the important tasks done, Kat quickly reloaded the pistol and put it away before leaving, her destination now being the camp. If they did*’t know already then they needed to be told, and it was her job as a scout to do so. Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

The Docks

Etheldredda's journey was plagued by thoughts of what she had just heard- of Rovaan's supposed blood lust. Etheldredda was violent, she was filled with rage and could go into an uncontrollable frenzy when it came to it. But she never revelled in the deaths she caused like the half-demon had. Still, had Rovaan not killed those men, disaster would have struck Copperdale, so Etheldredda wasn't going to call him out. If her battle against the Dread Lord had taught her anything, it was that anyone could be a hero.

"Tell me of your previous mission, Conleth," the hagspawn addressed the young man she had taken along with her. Of their group, Annie was the only person that Etheldredda really knew and trusted, and ignoring Siera she'd not seen any of them before in her life. Still, Conleth's coincidental appearance at the troll bridge was more than a little suspicious. Was this a trick being played on them? Had Conleth been hunting hags, like Etheldredda suspected?

And if so, did that mean that the Coven knew of their plans?

Food Forage

Even this late into the day, the marketplace had yet to close entirely. Those too poor to own their own shops manned their stalls instead, selling whatever wares or old antiques or stolen goods they could. A few guards marched around the place, casting Zed and Judy suspicious glances as they made their way through- after all, Zed's dark blue robes were quite distinctive, and quite out of place in this environment. Still, neither of them were stopped.

"A mage!" Called out one seller. "You'll be wanting my bones-to-bananas spell scroll! Completely legitimate, given to me by the Time Mage himself!"

"Jewellery!" Hollered another to Judy. "Premium earrings! Immaculate necklaces! Rings that'll put your mother's pride to shame!"

"Battered cod!" Came a third voice. "You question the cod's value and you'll be battered!"

A lot of the meats were issuing a somewhat off-putting smell for having been out in the sun all day, but the vegetables were fine, and the fruit when they weren't rotten, and one stall was serving fresh bread of all kinds. Further down, stood upon the marketplace fountain, was the town crier ringing his cow-bell.

"The devil walks among us!" He called. "Father to Fire! Husband of Demons! Soahc the Deceiver has sacked two towns! Repent, ye sinners, or rest in eternal toil!"

The Local Pub

Annie and Siera would find themselves in an old, white-wooded and high-beamed establishment which called itself Pride of Tyrrus . Inside the pub was three rooms, each one connected to the other by open alcoves and each room bordering the bar which sat at the centre of the establishment. It was clearly the most popular place in town, with glass collectors swishing in and out, either ignoring bawdy comments or making bawdier ones of their own. Four barwomen tended their station whilst the proprietor of the place sat and drank with his own customers.

Five particularly drunk gentlemen were trying to form an a capella group and failing miserably. Two knights sat on the side furthest away from the fire. A group of hooded travellers sat in a corner with their backs turned to the festivities whilst a lone stranger hid in the shadows of a corner. At a table a man was defeated at a game of Forger , the victor having a large pile of coin next to him- clearly, he had been winning at this particular board-game all night and was welcoming any challengers.

The owner of the bar was drinking with three women, a young man and a rather posh-looking gentleman who wore a sword by his side. At the bar, only one of the barwomen was free to talk, the others engaged with serving customers.

It would be up to Siera and Annie to choose their targets.

The Stowaways

As tensions between Joric and Rovaan seemed to raise, and the owner of the B&B they had hijacked awkwardly set some food in front of them in order to defuse the tension, the door to the building opened, and an old man hobbled in.

"Sorry sir, we're closed," said the building's owner, somewhat baffled. She was pretty sure that she had locked the door after the others had left, as per instruction.

"That'd explain the sign," said the old man. With the butt of his walking staff- one taller than he and as old and gnarled as the most ancient trees on the planet, he tapped the door closed, where the lock clicked into place as if of its own accord. The woman's eyes bulged in realisation that she was witnessing magic, and took a tentative step back.

"Best you wait upstairs," the wizard told her, and she complied immediately. He was as ancient looking and twisted as his own staff, wrapped up in layer after layer of robes and cloaks, greens and browns. His white beard trailed to near his pelvis, his hair fell in a silver waterfall behind him, and his eyes were a furious emerald. Though he stood straight and far taller than any his age should ever have a right to be, he looked older than ninety, with a thin frailty that a small gust of wind could break him.

"So tell me," he said, in a rough voice that did not match his appearance, "What brings such strange folk as yourselves this far from home? And why do you remain behind, whilst your friends explore the town?"

Espionage

"Exactly?" Repeated Soahc, his voice a gruff and barely-literate growl in his new disguise. "That implies I have a single goal in mind. I'm after a loyal servant, a knowledgeable man to question, and an organisation to rebuild. Anything else of interest that pops up on the way will be acceptable too."

With that said, Soahc departed for his own part of the mission.

The Black Knight

The walls around the village were high enough that Brodus would have little hope to scale them. Bowmen were patrolling the walk ways, clearly wary of an imminent attack. It would become evident that news had spread of Soahc's rampage through the countryside, as the tower he had chosen was being strengthened and repaired. Though the arrow-slit windows were too high as well for Brodus to pull himself up, a pulley system had been left erected, which would be used to carry heavy stones to the tower's top where a guard leaned casually over a loaded ballista.

The pulley could be operated from the ground and had been left unguarded. Hoisting himself up would require going past the windows, but there was no helping that. Brodus could decide either to rise to the level of the walls, where two bowmen waited, and either try his chances with them or to sneak past them, or he could go further up to where the windows became wider and try to slip inside the tower. Then again, the pulley seemed to go all the way to the top, and there was only a single guard on the ballista. Perhaps it would be easier to head there and work his way down?

The Assassin

Sileo Umbra's choice of tower was well chosen- the factors of the cloud coverage and the rising of the moon would play excellently into his ascent. The village walls were pristine, having clearly been raised higher and higher throughout the centuries, making the brickwork near impeccable.

The towers however were far more ancient, and less often given maintenance. For a skilled climber, it would be easy enough to find the right hand-holds and pull oneself up the tower in order to reach the arrow-slit windows, and then it would be an even easier climb to reach the larger windows further up the tower and clamber in, or else swing around the side and land on the walkway where two bowmen stood in hot debate. At the tower's top was a ballista with a man beside it, and another ascending from a trap door to give the sentry a beverage. Though Sileo would have to risk being seen climbing to the very top, that option could also prove a more fruitful venture.

The Pyromistress

The tower which Kira Vesteros approached was in better shape than most- perhaps this one had been built more recently than the others. It certainly stood higher, and seated two ballistas instead of one, with five guards perched at the top. This however lead to the walls at either side of the tower being less manned, with only a single bowman on either side and a great space between them and the next patrol.

Like the other towers, there was a great expanse of wall stretching higher than any man before reaching the arrow-slit windows and higher than that, wider windows which defeated the purpose of having arrow-slit windows in the first place. Light poured out of those higher windows, the promise of a roaring fire, and most likely extra guards huddled around it.

Just underneath the parapets that surrounded the circumference of the tower's top was a length of rope, from which hung the banners of Selathon their country, of Damian the Good their king, and of whichever lordling held court over these lands. If the rope was to be damaged, it could most likely serve as a way for Kira to hoist herself up- though in quite an undignified manner.
