The Road North

Well, when Spirry spoke, Mugwo appeared to be dumbstruck. Alania looked concerned, perhaps the only one who wanted to help the newborn demon. Karstone was about to throw one of his hammers, but Alania shoved passed him. During that time prior to the Ogre's arrival, Spirry made no reaction to the woman, as if he did not even notice her.

Alania mentioned Spirry to be lost and alone, exactly what he was. A lost, lonely, forgotten spirit from a lost, forgotten world. She then fearlessly approached him; Spirry made no reaction. A strange presence seemed to form; the Ogres looked empty, as if their minds wandered, yet wanted to do something. Alania even put a hand out to shake hands with the devil, stepping into the pooled blood around him, Spirry's immensely tall frame dripping blood as always. She asked him his name, but he did not reply, empty eye sockets staring back. He spoke his words (mentioned in previous page), asking Charles the question if he feared pain.

When Charles shouted for Spirry to be shot, Alania sprang to action, yelling out “No*. How she managed to feel empathy for him was anybody's guess. Everyone seemed to behave oddly in these few minutes; Mugwo had offered peace, Henry wanted them to part ways, and now, Alania wanted to be friends.

The five young Ogres arrived to the scene; Mugwo had done some hand signal to them, and they stopped, angrily eyeing the demon. The Ogres and humans exchanged glances, but Spirry remained seemingly oblivious to everything.

“Can you feel it? The presence of this force, this entity, it is one of mind-control. That sound of the spiritual harpies, I will kill with silence.” Spirry remarked, though whether there was many or a single entity floating around, well, who knows?

An uncanny silence came back. Everyone felt tense, simply wondering what would happen next, and awaiting what would happen next. The adventurers were ready to fight, but if any action broke out, which side would the demon be on? Which side would the Ogres be on?

After a few more silent seconds, only Spirry's blood to be heard dripping, one of the younger Ogres relaxed a bit, and then said, “As Mugwo says, he take you to Decan, take you to Og. Right Mugwo?”

“Ya! Mugwo keeps word, we keep word, unless he changes. Maybe Mugwo take you littles to Decan, and we stay here to keep demon here. We five more than match for demon.” Another proposed, gripping his weapon.

The five young Ogres were eager to fight the demon, or at least try to keep him at bay while Mugwo would take the humans to Decan, though the Ogres already forgot that the demon could fly. Spirry tilted his head and snapped his jaws.

“H-hehee! I could use the meat.” Newborn remarked with a gurgling giggle, who definitely needed sustenance; he would have no problem fighting multiple opponents.

Spirry then looked at Alania, who still gripped her longsword. The adventurers remained cautious, Charles definitely ready to fight the demon and the Ogres if need be.

“Alania Clarke,” Spirry said, hollowed sockets gazing at her as drops of blood trickled down his fleshy face, “I was born nameless, but I named myself Spirry. Your thoughts are to help me, I will remember that, I will always be with you, but not now.” He said to her, this time, not suggesting any kind of demonic possession, but rather, accepting the friendship.

“No, not now! I wait no more!” One of the young Ogres grumbled, lifting his massive great sword and swinging it downwards overhead; Spirry suddenly sprang to action, bending over acutely, and within a moment, an eye-blink, a mere twinkling, had grabbed the Ogre's forearms and held them firmly, forcing the Ogre to stand in the spot.

Undoubtedly, Spirry's grip could match an Ogre's, even though he did not appear as big as one, and that came to a surprise for the Ogres, especially the one who attacked him, feet slipping in the blood, and he would have fallen were Spirry not holding him in place.

Spirry then did something the Ogres did not expect; the demon, like a meaty spring, hopped up and away, and wings vibrating so powerfully and quickly they moved, he took flight, flapping with a steady pace and hovering. The four young Ogres had taken a few steps forward to fight, but they stopped and looked up confusedly. The adventurers, in their differing views, awaited something to happen.

“Have you already forgotten I can fly?” Spirry asked the Ogres, then shifted a bit to look at Mugwo, “Take them to Decan, to Og; keep your word to them. So will I keep my word with Alania.” He continued, and then turned in his flight to look at Alicia, the one who refused him, then looked back to Alania, and said, “I will be watching.”

At that, Spirry flew upwards, and writhed through the air, and flew off, blood flowing down from his frame. Off the demon went, probably to everyone's relief.

“Ha! Stupid red bat coward and run away!” A young Ogre exclaimed triumphantly.

“He smart, for demon. Mugwo, do you take knights to Decan? We still patrol area for spies, too.” Another remarked.

Finally, the tense moment of Newborn's arrival came to an end, but now, what would Mugwo do?

Farmlands

As she played on, delving into whatever this pile of skin was, Siera wasn’t quite sure what she was finding. What she had seen fly away had clearly been a bird of some kind, but the skin seemed to have been part of the creature as well. A shape-changing being, perhaps? That did*’t make sense, though, not if the skin hadn’t been a real part of it. Shapeshifters couldn’t just shed half of their form at will; the transformation consumed their entire form, leaving none of it - except perhaps clothing - behind.

Yet the more concerning revelation was that it did not seem to be a natural construct. The resonance of the item’s harmonies seemed to indicate that it was an artificial being, and the depth that it rang from told her that it was ancient, much older than herself or anyone else in this group. As she delved deeper, the musician’s own music began to meld with what she was finding, her own notes leading her into an evolving melody that was beginning to mimic what she was hearing. Hearing the notes gave her more insight on what she was trying to find, and recreating the entire melody would allow her to see what was actually being done.

And then, without warning, an incredibly discordant note sounded off the harp, a scream of protest from the fingers that were dancing across it. The note reverberated across the surrounding landscape, no further sounds overriding it, until it faded out in the distance. Although the harp remained in her hands, the fingers grasping it were shaking, the hand frozen in place and unable to return it to the belt even though there would be no more playing. A facial expression of concentration was replaced by one of surprise and shock, eyes widening as the fingers that had been playing dropped to her side.

She could not continue to play, for what she had heard was the same siren song that had been in her mind since the encounter with the Dread Lord.

It was not the entire thing, merely a piece, but for a moment it had resonated perfectly with that she remembered and the attempt to recreate it had forced the harp to sound in a way that it was not meant to. It was the same as every other time she had tried, and she knew that there was only one conclusion to be drawn: she could not recreate it on an instrument.

Robnoxious, having found nothing substantial, looked up from the pile of skin when the note sounded and walked back over to the musician, licking the hand that had dropped to her side. That startled her out of the shock at finding such notes here, and brought her back to reality enough that she lowered the harp and replaced it on the belt hook. Her hands were still shaking, but she smiled, patting the hellpup on the head before taking a deep breath to steady herself and starting to walk towards the bridge where Etheldredda was currently standing.

She was barely halfway there when the hagspawn turned in her direction and delivered a sudden command. It surprised the musician, for she was not the person she had expected to take the lead. There were many choices she would have thought were better, such as any of the warriors, but the fact that she felt Etheldredda wasn’t exactly in the best mood regarding her squashed any attempt to rebutt the motion. That, and the knowledge that there was no real way for her to communicate without an intermediary.

At the very least, Etheldredda seemed as concerned about Rovaan as Siera was, and the response wasn’t exactly comforting to the musician. Even if he was telling the truth about the gauntlet regulating his demonic power, it did not mean his mind was affected any less. That was what she was concerned about, not about how much of the power he could use. It was even more terrifying when she considered that the power he had just used was extremely destructive while not being the full strength he could muster.

She wanted to fight to give him a chance, and with any other race it would have been easy to do so. Demons, though...they were something she could not fully trust, regardless of what they said.

In the end, she knew it would not be her choice. The hagspawn had the decision, and with the way it was between the two of them right now the musician was not going to try and interject her opinion. She could be ready for something to happen, but with everything they were walking into she doubted anything from within would be spotted in time to make a difference.

The newcomer’s story sounded very much like the stories of the place she knew they were heading towards, and although his arrival almost seemed too coincidental she was willing to overlook that. It was coincidence - and a great deal of it - that had brought her to this point, and so its existence was something she knew to be fact. People could claim that coincidences did not happen, but she knew otherwise and had less of an issue believing someone simply because their story was too coincidental. There was a limit, of course, but hers was a bit higher than most, and a new companion that had a similar mission to what they were setting out to do could be a great help accomplishing their goal.

When the Guildmaster asked Annie to repeat what the troll had said, and she did so, Siera couldn’t deny that she had no idea what it meant. Riddles were one of her weakest points when it came to wordplay, although having never tried much in terms of any kinds she really did*’t have experience solving any such dilemmas. The unfortunate part was that she knew she should at least try to understand, for such puzzles always seemed to come up when something important was at stake.

It made no sense. Everything that it had said had a clear answer, that answer being “You don’t”, but that would defeat the purpose of it being a riddle in the first place. If the answer was not that, then perhaps it was something to do with the reason there was an obvious answer. Why do something that you shouldn’*? Was there a reason, or was this just words without meaning, spun to confuse them?

Plucking two notes on the harp, Siera’s pointer finger began to glow blue, and she used it to write, “
Perhaps it is to make something happen that should not? None of that is a good decision normally.
” in the air in front of her.

While the written words were directed more in the direction of those discussing it, anyone that could read them would be able to do so. She was not excluding anyone from this, because if it was important then there may be something that they would need to find, some meaning that would be relevant later on. Whatever had created this likely knew more about this world and the current state of events than they did...and maybe the answer would lead her where she needed to go.

Evil Sharing Time

I’ll trust you about as much as I can burn you, my dear Soahc.
” the pyromistress replied, a venomous grin coming to her features in response to his moment of doe-eyed sympathy gathering. Like most of the interactions between them, the words both held truth and a joke, but as usual it was difficult, if not impossible, to discern which was more the case. “
And Black, you say? Mmm, now that’s a man I wouldn’t mind seeing again. Don’t worry, I never got close enough to do anything...untoward.

She pouted, adding, “
He’s such a tease. Puts everything a girl could want in front of her and then keeps it just out of reach.

The attempt that Soahc made at ice-breaking was enough to make Kira start laughing, the seemingly awkward silence not bothering her one bit. Whether he was actually serious or not, she had no idea, but even if he was it was such a mockery of the type of things that all of the would-be hero types did that she couldn’t help herself. It was like they were actually trying to be a real team, with actual knowledge of and trust in each other! That thought cracked her up most of all, because it wasn’t how the world worked, but if they wanted to pretend then there was no reason for her not to go along with it.

The necromancer was the first to speak, and his first words made her respect him just a bit more. Her own question about the two on the cart had been ignored, and it seemed he knew another inquiry would be as well, so he had instead put it in the form of a small jab at the demigod. She still wanted to know who they were - the boy especially, since he looked like he would be a lot of fun to toy with - but without knowing their significance she couldn’t do much of anything regarding them.

He was old, though, a lot older than she had expected him to be, which made him one of the more formidable members of this group by default. Raw power was incredibly important, but she was sure he knew more than anyone else here save Soahc, and that could be of great advantage to one who wielded it properly. Fortunately the undead he summoned would fall to her fire somewhat easily - at least if they were anything like the numerous undead she had encountered in the rest of her life - but that did*’t mean he wasn’t still the one she would least like to fight out of those assembled.

If you did*’t know from the wanted posters scattered around the world, my name is Kira Vesteros.
” the pyromistress introduced herself, giving everyone a deep bow that gave them a pretty clear view down the front of her dress. “
I am the most gifted pyromancer in the world and the most beautiful woman you’ll ever see. I don’t trust any of you, but as long as we all have something to offer each other I welcome an alliance. Come to me if you want someone or something purified, and I will grant that, for it is my purpose to bring the eternal fire to every last corner of this world.

Although she was grinning at the start of what she was saying, by the end her visage had turned somewhat more serious. Every word uttered was the truth, for she saw no reason to obscure such obvious facts with a transparent lie. If anyone disliked her for speaking her purpose, they could take it up with the fire themselves.

Joric Ironfist - Farmlands

Joric walked over to Etheldredda when he heard his name called. Odd... he wasn't really used to people calling him by his name.

He took some time to reflect on what happened in the fight. Siera and Zed hadn't really surprised him - he had seen them fight before. Annie used more of her unspecified god magic. Fredic* had cowered, and was getting an earful from Annie for his behavior. Rovaan appeared to be part demon - and seemed to think Kuro was as well. That was odd. When had Kuro ever said he was part demon? Had Rovaan ever met Kuro prior to this adventure? He couldn't really remember. Did half demons have the power to just sense other demons like that?

Some newcomer had also appeared, who Ethel (because spelling Etheldredda is a hassle - I mean come on guys!) was in the midst of questioning. Deciding to break the tense mood, Joric finally spoke.

"I think you should let 'em join. You could say you were... taking him under your wing. " He said, gesturing to Conleth's bird.

-----

Brodus - The High Road

"Let's see..." Brodus began, thinking back on his own life story and deciding to play along.

"My name is Brodus, last name unimportant. My family couldn't stand me, so they shipped me off to become a knight's squire, which I hated. I served for the necessary amount of the years before I was promoted to a full knight somewhere around nineteen, which I hated slightly less. Rebellious teen angst and all that. A year later me and some other knights found this sword..." He patted the weapon on his back. "...in an old tomb that some cultists were holed up in. I blacked out, and when I came to we had all killed each other and I was the only one alive. The sword called out to me, I walked up and grabbed it, and just like that it was mine."
