Views on Magic

Although undoubtedly wonderful, magic is regarded in a myriad of ways depending on where in Engelain you are. The Tyrannian Empire believes that to use magic is to emulate Tyrrus's own powers, and as such magic can only be practised by members of the Church. This association with the oppressive Tyrannian Church might be the main reason why magic is outlawed in almost all of the Free Kingdoms, with only a few exceptions.

Selathon is the only country to outright allow magic and host Mages Guilds and Wizards Towers, considered the more tolerant nation. Magic can only be practised in Rigdon with the express permission of the queen, where magicians are used as a police force to hunt down dissenters. There are often rumours of dark, magical practises coming out of Y'tun*, but the country's isolationist nature (building a colossal wall to surround the entire nation's boarders,) means these cannot be verified. The other ten Free Kingdoms outright outlaw magic, on pain of death.

In the Seven States magic is greatly appreciated and admired, with sages being given important roles in society. Outside of the Seven States, Free Kingdoms and Tyrannian Empire however, in the many petty-kingdoms of man, tolerance of magic differs from place to place.
With regards to species, it is known that the elves practise magic, and that centaurs have some unnatural form of astrology. Ogress Shamans are highly attuned with nature magic, as are nymphs and fae, whilst it has been debated whether the birdmen practise magic or are simply more technologically advanced than the other races in Engelain.

Of course, even in areas with great magical acceptance, the 'dark arts' of necromancy, demonology and the like are still outlawed as being monstrous and heretical.

Hags and Ogres

As two of the three thread introductions suggest that we shall be dealing with these creatures directly, I am dedicating this section to go into further depth about the cultures of both.

Hags

Hags are, as far as humanity is concerned, a single-gender race, taking the forms of physically hideous, twisted old women. Repulsive to look upon and not very strong, hags must rely upon their natural magical abilities in order to survive. They are exceptional at casting illusion spells, often to disguise their hovels as an appealing location to lure in their prey, are adept at potion-brewing and other forms of magic, and are rumoured to breed with demons in order to carry on their species.

Though solitary by nature, some hags come together to form clusters, quite often composed of a hagmother and her children, in what is known as a coven. The more hags in the coven, the more branches of magic they can explore, thus the more powerful the community as a whole becomes. Hags are known to kidnap attractive young men and imprison them, using them only to breed, to produce beautiful offspring called Hagspawn, which are then used to lure in more men.

The Great Mother is the leader of the greatest hag coven in Engelain, composed of her and her many daughters, their hagspawn, and the descendants of those hagspawn. The creature she is attempting to summon, the Hagfather, is the true male member of their species- rare, bestial, and extremely powerful, being inseminated by a Hagfather gives extraordinary powers, but if the Great Mother were to capture it instead...

Ogres

Ogres are simplistic creatures, near-twice a man's height, grey-skinned, rocky-looking. They are primitive, with bone weapons living in mud huts. They are lead by Shamans, voluptuous women that have turned green from magical absorption, which rule over the tribes like sages.

(More to be added when I can be bothered.)
