"Odd ain't the word I'd use," said the old man, spitting on the floor. "Suspicious, I'd say. Someone's pulling their strings for their own gain, an' I mean to find out who." Rickard had no doubt that everyone in this room was out to find out who was pulling these strings, or perhaps to start pulling strings themselves. It was true that the ogre clans had miraculously united, utilising weapons and magic that they had no right in knowing. Everyone suspected foul play, but no one knew who to blame. Some reckoned the elves were weaving their dark spells, or the birdmen were getting the ogres to exterminate themselves out of spite, or that Soahc the Deceiver himself had come to wreak havoc on the northern peninsula.

Personally, Rickard didn't care for this conversation whatsoever. What did it matter whether or not these savages ended up creating their own extinction event? The only real worry is if they turned their sights south, which they couldn't do if they continued fighting each other. Rickard didn't like these adventurer types meddling in affairs. Nothing but trouble came when adventurers were around. Supposedly adventurers had summoned elder demons in the west, just to give themselves something to do. Rickard wanted no part in that.

Standing up as the barely-disguised elf spoke up of political corruptness in his or her government, Rickard waddled his way to the bathroom to relieve himself, half expecting to find the drunkard passed out in there. He smiled as he remembered a rather rotund woman who had entered the establishment the other night, yelling about her desire to save the ogres. She'd looked like half an ogre herself. Whatever happened to the conventional warrior? Walking into the restroom he pulled down his small clothes and let loose until no more could come, and then turned to leave.

The drunkard was standing at the door.

"Excuse m-" Rickard's sentence was cut off as slimy, segmented fingers grasped at his throat. He reached up to claw away the hand, but the fingers began to stretch and contort and wrap themselves about his neck, cutting off his airways. He threw a punch at the hand, he scratched at it, but it was no use. His eyes were watering and he could feel his body convulsing for breath.

"Are you afraid of what is to come?" Asked the man, in a deep voice that sounded completely foreign, not just to this region, but to this reality. The stranger was hooded, their face concealed. "Do you... Dread it?" Rickard looked below the hood, looked into the shadows, into the face of his killer, and began to scream.

But no noise could come from Rickard's throat, his trachea nearly snapping in two with the force being placed on it. His attacker, that thing, was leering towards him, so close that Rickard could taste its foul, monstrous breath. And as Rickard's lips parted once again to cry out for help, the creature lurched forwards, and forced its way into his open mouth...

Hello one and all, and welcome to Into The Fire! My name's D F Angel, and hopefully I'll be your TM for this thread. Into The Fire is set in the fantasy world of Engelain, your stereotypical medieval land of adventure. Although this roleplay is a sequel to The Champions Guild, knowledge of that thread isn't necessary, and anyone can hop aboard at any time! My following posts will detail some background information on the setting, which might help in giving you a broader understanding of the world we'll be roleplaying in, but again this is not necessary.

If you need to talk to me about anything, feel free to get in touch with me either on here or (preferably) on the Role-Playing Community Home. Whenever I log in I make sure to check all of the posts I have missed on the RPCH, so I'll definitely get back to you as soon as I am able. I look forward to role-playing alongside you all, and I hope that we have a blast together!

Rules

~ All usual RPing rules obviously apply, (No Godmodding, autohitting, powerplaying, etc. If you're uncertain what these are, don't be afraid to ask!)

~ Keep Out Of Character posts to a minimum- OOC is especially frowned upon when not accompanied with an In Character post. I will almost always be monitoring the Role-Playing Community Home thread if you are wishing to contact me personally

~ There is no maximum amount of characters a roleplayer can use, though I'd recommend no more than three- don't try to overstretch yourself if you don't think you can handle multiple characters

~ Non-human characters are allowed, however the more abstract the race is, the less likely I am to accept it, (e.g. a half-dragon half-fox will be a hard concept to sell, so if you're going abstract you'll have to try hard to convince me)

~ Magic exists in this setting, along with some primitive gunpowder weapons, if this is what you wish to use. However, magic is draining to use and gunpowder weapons are limited to single-shots.

~ Speech is to be shown with speech marks, "speech," Thoughts are to be shown with the tilde, ~thoughts,~ or through italics and OOC talk is shown via parenthesis ((out of character)) or by beginning the sentence with OOC: out of character

Geography

Into The Fire takes place in a fantasy world, roughly equivalent to the middle ages in western Europe. Specifically it takes place on the continent of Engelain, a place rife with adventure, heroism, knights, etc. Black powder is a recent discovery, and an isolationist nation holding a monopoly on the powder mines means the weaponry is not widespread.

Engelain, being a temperate climate, is a host to a myriad of creatures. Chief amongst these are fae; fairies and sprites and nymphs and spirits. Centaurs and satyrs are indigenous to Engelain too, as are mysterious birdmen to the far north. Elves and dwarves are not natives to these lands, but aren't uncommon sights.

Engelain is boarded north, west and south by ocean, and to the east by a forest-country which is home to elven kind. Further east of this is another continent with a much colder climate, home to honour-bound nomads and treacherous mercenaries.

Engelain consists of thirteen kingdoms to the west, known as the Free Kingdoms, which are an offshoot of the south-eastern Tyrannian Empire. Further east than the Empire are the Seven States, another offshoot of the empire that is generally seen as impoverished and neglected. East of the Free Kingdoms and north of the Empire and Seven States is The Great Plains where the centaurs roam and satyrs rule over their petty kingdoms. Further north than that is the mountain eyries of the birdmen, and the savage ogres that live at their base.
The first and second introductions take place in Selathon, one of the Free Kingdoms, and the only one to openly encourage magic. The third introduction takes place in the rolling hills of the ogre clans, to the far north-east, bordering the elven realm.

Religion

((Note, this isn't to say your characters can't have their own religion/gods. This is just the religion most commonly followed in Engelain))

The Engelite Pantheon is a story that spans many centuries, but shall be condensed here. There are two conflicting stories for how the world came to be: Either it was created by Tyrrus, God of Order and Wisdom and the most commonly worshipped of the Engelite Gods, or it was found by Janus, God of Time and the 'Head' of the pantheon.

The story told by the Tyrannian Church, (the greatest church in Engelain,) is that Tyrrus created the earth, then created Janus to guard the Halls of Janus, a realm which is connected to every door ever made, and through which one can travel through time. The Church of Engelain/CoE (most common in the Free Kingdoms,) says that Janus decided to guard the Halls of Janus himself, and appointed Tyrrus to guard the earth.

The former religion believes that Tyrrus created Fiara and Ciera, the sun and moon goddesses, to guard their respective planets, whilst the latter attribute this to Janus. Afterwards, Tyrrus created the animals of Engelain, before wanting to make his chosen race to teach his vast knowledge to. First he made giants and dwarves, before settling on humans.

Centuries later, a son was born to Tyrrus, Soahc, God of Chaos and Anarchy. A war erupted between father and son, after which Soahc was sealed away by Janus. (The CoE believes Janus sealed Tyrrus away too, whilst the Tyrannian Church say Tyrrus left willingly to stop the war.) For centuries there was peace, until a man named Arran, angered by the destruction of the gods, rose up to fight them. However, Soahc gave his godhood to Arran so that he could re-enter **gelain and cause mischief again, and Arran was sealed away by Janus for being a god; though he is planning on regaining mortality again.

History

Mythology aside, scientific research suggests that the world in which Engelain is a part of is roughly between twelve-thousand and five-hundred thousand years old, (some suggest even greater, perhaps an infinite span of time, but are often deemed heretics.) Bordered on three sides by ocean and on the last by a hostile elven nation, Engelain in its early history was somewhat isolated from the other continents of the world- of which only three others are known to exist.

The earliest records of mankind are lost to the countless wars which it has fought, whether this be the Great War between Almighty Tyrrus and Soahc the Deceiver, or the warring of empires and nations. It is known that the first civilisations to develop were those of the birdmen and the now-extinct onocentaurs, cousins of the centaurs of today, roughly twelve-thousand years ago. How the onocentaurs built their cities is a mystery, but the birdmen's geothermally-powered, mountain-top eyries were fashioned from slave labour; specifically, the abduction of dwarves from other continents to craft the tunnels which generate their energy. Most dwarves in Engelain today are descended from these same slaves, that were simply cast out after their work was complete.

Eight-thousand years ago, legends spreading across Engelain detail a great war between demons and undead, though this could simply be a poetic analogy for wide-spread diseases.

The first empire of which there is any great knowledge of is the Casurillion, which spanned across the Great Plains of the centaurs down to the shores of what we know as Tywrought. After the mysterious destruction of its capital of Cassul, the empire collapsed.

And it was from the ashes that the Tyrannian Empire arose. A superpower like no other, the Tyrannian Empire conquered most of Engelain, from the westernmost point to the shadows of the elven forests. Their great ships sailed out to conquer other continents, and settled countless primitive isles. They wiped out the onocentaurs and many species of the birdmen, forced the ogres into the north where they remain to this day. Their conquering of the land was absolute, and many believed the Empire would last forever.

However, like all great empires, its undoing was by overstretching. Unable to keep control of its outermost colonies, the first great loss came five hundred years ago when Legatus Dwail Hogsworthy crowned himself High King and annexed the then-seventeen realms which would become the Free Kingdoms.

Two hundred years after this loss, another came from the east, as the Seven States were united by a warrior named Arran, and together overthrew the rule of the Tyrannian Empire there, at the cost of Arran's own life, (though some say he ascended to godhood.)

Since then, little much has changed. The Free Kingdoms became thirteen in number, satellited by various petty-kingdoms formed by bandits and barbarians and pagans and exiles. The Tyrannian Empire has shrunk to a fraction of its former glory, now only holding a few provinces outside of its home-country of Tywrought. Most of the land they once ruled has been reclaimed by the centaurs, who have become fiercely territorial to compensate.

Most recently, the northern ogre clans have united into two large nations, Og and Ogrin, and have declared war on one another. The Tyrannian Empire has begun expanding east into the Seven States, with a war of the western boarders of Romia imminent. The monarchy of the Free Kingdom of Gaules has been overthrown and replaced with a Republic. The next chapter of the world's history, whatever it may be, will most certainly unfold in the days to come...

Species

These are the races which are endemic to Engelain. Note that other species do exist, but aren't from **gelain itself. If you wish to add any races to the list, feel free to contact me.

Human: The dominant species on the continent, which I hope you are somewhat familiar with

Fae: A blanket term to describe a myriad of beings such as fairies, pixies, leprechauns, sprites, changelings, etc.

Fairy: Highly magically-attuned, yet reclusive individuals

Pixie: Non-magical cousins of fairies, with a greater relationship with nature

Centaur: Half horse, half man, ruling over the largest area of land in Engelain, lead by a powerful stallion and wise chiron

Satyr/Faun: Two-legged half goat, half man with horns, live alongside the centaurs with a rudimentary culture

Avian: Commonly referred to as birdmen, who live in cities built atop mountains, have various subspecies, though most are now extinct

Ogre: Not originally from **gelain, but notable for their tough hides, strong bodies, and dim-wittedness

Nymph: Nature-spirits that personify plants and rivers and many other things (Non-playable)

Faeborn: A misnomer, as they are born from nymphs. Most are half-animal hybrids monsters killed by adventurers, but occasionally a talking dog or something equally as bizarre is born
