Few people would have the ability to even penetrate such a fortress, even fewer with such a strange entrance through the front gates and with so much destruction afterwards.

It was unfortunate that such reality had to show up in front of her, for SIera had been holding onto hope that she wouldn't have to make any kind of confrontation with the demi-god. All she wanted was for him to let Cadmus go if he had him, and to tell her where he was if he did not. Conflict was not something she wanted, for she was certain that such a thing wasn't within her power to accomplish. Fighting with demi-gods was a task for accomplished heroes, and she wasn't even a regular one.

Robnoxious did not seem to be offended by Thorek's action, although the way his eyes flicked upwards indicated that there was a better target for stifling in his mind. That target, the flute, did not take the opportunity to prove him right, and dove down to SIera, taking refuge in her belt holster. Both companions seemed to understand that this wasn't a situation where they could be careless, and with their intentions to keep their master safe they wouldn't be pulling any shenanigans.

However, that did not mean the hellpup would not do what he thought was best. When Siera climbed out and shook her head at him when he went to follow, Robnoxious paid her no mind and jumped out anyways, looking up at her with a look that seemed to say, "Go ahead." When she tried to give him a stare that told him she wasn't having any of this, the hellpup returned the stare, and Siera could see that he was completely serious about what was happening. While she did not agree that he should come, the musician could not deny that he seemed to have a great deal of intelligence, and that, at the very least, gave her the knowledge that he wouldn't just be...well, a normal dog.

With a last nod to Thorek, Siera started walking up the hill and towards the shattered gates. If Thorek's intention was for them to go together, then he would be able to keep up with her pretty easily.

What she didn't see was the hellpup hanging behind the group, and, when he was sure that both Siera and Thorek were out of earshot, letting out a low whine. It trilled up into what sounded like a dog's imitation of a song, and, when the whine faded, so too had Robnoxious.

Fiery Purification is the Greatest Thing in the World...Except for a Nice MLT

Centaur upon centaur fell, but even still the charge did not stop. The agonized screams of those on fire were music to her ears, but it was not enough. There were too few of them that accepted the purification she offered them, too many that wanted the impure death of a sword or spear over the flame. It was a common attitude, one that made her eyes blaze with the flames that burned within her, for they could never understand what they were denying unless they accepted it as she had.

At this point in the mass combat, it became more difficult for her to simply rain destruction without targeting her own side as well. While she didn’t really care if they died, her own relations with the rest of those here were, for the most part, less than positive, and she needed to maintain a partially favorable relationship with them for the moment. That meant not killing the minions of her allies, which she could live with because it didn’t really advantage her to do so anyways.

While the fiery cloud did not dissipate, remaining up in the sky, it had stopped raining lances once the herd had collided with the forces of evil. Every few moments, another would fall, but they were not numerous and seemed to be aimed at the parts of the herd that were not in melee combat.

However, the cloud, which had been centered above Kira, began to move forward at a moderate speed, heading out from where she was located and looking as though it was heading for the center of the herd.

As for Kira herself, she remained back behind the front lines, her elementals motionless. She had no reason to join the melee, and if the enemies wanted to get to her they would have to get through the front lines and find her first. As a general rule, Kira disliked mass combat; there wasn’t any way for her to get up close and personal with those she was incinerating. Maybe she could accomplish her goals either way, but this was was much less satisfying.

I’d Swear I’m Calm, but that’d be a Lie

Fear is a tool every hunter needs, something to be used but not taken over by.
” was Kat’s response. “
It tells you when a hunt is unsafe, and when you are outmatched. Those without fear die early, and those with too much don’t live. To be fearless is to be foolish.

Although she was willing to respect the chain of command, she would not - could not - simply stop herself from being angry. That made them hard to stop, as her tears were not of fear, only of bitterness and rage. Although that was not something she even considered communicating, it didn’t make it any less difficult to compose herself. Besides, being fearless was fine for a typical soldier, but for a hunter, having none was a sure way to get oneself killed.

Sighing as she made no move to wipe her eyes, Kat simply nodded an affirmative to the order. There were few other options now, although after seeing what had just happened she wasn’t sure who would even have the advantage in a fight.

This passed beyond her area of expertise, the demon here being something she would normally stay away from rather than try to engage. She was a huntress, not a hero, and it was surely a hero that would be needed to defeat a creature such as this.

It didn’t help that she didn’t particularly have the most faith in their ally. The Big Fat was...well, not something she was a fan of. That creature was almost as much of an abomination as what they had just fought, and, unlike Martha, Kat did not believe that this demon had anything to do with the conflict. It looked, to her, to be an independent force, and that was much more troubling than if it was allied with either side. Still, that wasn’t something she was going to point out to the Big Fat, not when it would likely be important in gaining aid.

As for making sure nothing was on their tail, there wasn’t anything special to do. It seemed that this creature had no interest in keeping them there, and Kat suspected that if it did they would not have been able to leave in the first place. What they were dealing with was something far above them in strength, and everything that had happened had made it fairly clear that it simply didn’t care about them.

Trying not to think about the friend that she had just lost and the betrayal that had made it happen, she started walking once again. They once again had a destination to get to, and even if she was sure there would be nothing following them she had the directive to make sure.

The burning and stinging pain fell away from Rovaan's gaping wounds. They still bleed but the pain did not linger. Rovaan sighed, his shoulders slumping before taking a deep breath and opening his eyes. The chaotic scene that lay before him made him grin, baring his monstrous fangs over the edge of his titanic maw. The brief glimpses of the beast that had come to either slay or prevent from being summoned broadened the grin further. Raising his head to the canopy above Rovaan let out a howling roar and renewed his flurry of attacks on the scattered hagspawn with his demonic blade in response to the cries of the furies.

The pain of his wounds no longer a hindrance to him as he pushed past Zed's barrier swinging his blade. All Rovaan wanted to do now was kill anything that got in his way or die taking down as many as possible. His blade seemed to share in his disposition as the runes etched into the steel glowed with delight. Rovaan had no specific target in mind, whatever was in his way would meet the cold edge of his blade, or his claws.

Whatever attacks that lashed out against his flesh from the hagspawn and their allies only drove his bloodlust more. Each new wound drove Rovaan deeper into a frenzy as he batted foes aside or cleaved them in two. He stumbled once, having to plant his blade into the ground for support as a direfox bit into Achilles, maiming him. In anger Rovaan swatted the fox away sending it flying into a tree before trying to stand once more. Rovaan was doing his best to make himself a target so that the others could recover and find some way to accomplish what they had come to do, even if it meant his own death. But none of that mattered now, Rovaan's thought were only focused on one thing, killing as many things as possible and trying to not let the destructive nature of his demonic heritage run too rampant.

Conleth buried his head in his arms as he was tackled to the ground, just as the stream of siphoned flames rushed over both him and Etheldredda.

Pulling his head up, spitting out his complimentary mouth-full-of-soil, he saw the forest in total darkness. Then he heard it. Far off, some huge thing was approaching. No sooner had he been able to register what was going on, than Etheldredda told him they had to move and disappeared into the shadows.

"Er...Right!" he replied rather weakly, pushing himself up and dashing into the inky blackness after the party's leader.

Blast , he thought to himself, stumbling on the uneven ground as he ran. The tiny, meager lights punctuating the darkness were hardly enough to guide the way. He was vaguely aware of Rovaan however, thanks to his rather conspicuous appearance, and the fact that he'd almost hit him with an unfortunate direfox which had been stupid enough to bite his ankle.

It was shortly after jumping over the creature as it slumped to the ground, that he turned to look in Rovaan's direction. Somewhere else in the clearing, a brief flash illuminated Thorek near the coven's leader, fighting with what appeared to be one of her guards. He took one of his knives, drew his arm back and threw, aiming not to damage but to catch the hagspawn by surprise so Thorek could gain the edge in the fight.

Through the fog of nothingness, through the pitch black lens of night, a greater darkness lurched towards them.

Without any source of light, it was impossible to tell its composition. It was large, for every footfall shook the earth, and its bouldersome form crashed into the ancient tree-trunks about it, the sound of shattered bark filling the air, the sound of falling timber. It seemed to be a mobile mountain, with two appendages reaching forth that must have been arms, or perhaps claws- something of their shape and their movement reminiscent of reptiles.

"We've got to move," whispered Etheldredda to Conleth, scrambling off the young man and heading where she had last sighted the others in her group. She tripped, fell, her iron mask denting as it smacked against a rock. Teeth gritted she rose again and continued, reaching like the summoned beast was reaching its way into the coven, hoping beyond hope that she would not run straight into an adversary.

They needed light, and they needed it now. The hags were lighting fires of their own through means of magic, but just as soon as they were created they were snuffed out again, morsels for the Hagfather's unending hunger. Brief glimpses of the behemoth revealed it to be bloated, supported by two titanic legs, with a great hunch marking the top of its body- the creature's small, tumorous head emerging from the centre of the body.

At last Etheldredda stumbled into Zed, grabbing his robes and gesturing upwards at the canopy of spider silk above, she offered but one piece of advice:

"Raze the roof."

Firefall

On the ground there was only darkness, but above their heads was a sky of flame. A red ocean hung above them, a raging inferno that seemed to suck the oxygen out from the air around them. Cracks of thunder would signal the snapping of a branch that had hung overhead for a thousand years, and with it would be brought of flood of raging torchlight. Fire rained from the sky, engulfing combatants, crushing buildings, illuminating to the world the chaos that swept through the forest of Myrkvior.

In the falling light of the burning woods, the Hagfather was brought to frightful focus.

It was a mountainous thing, lumbered forward by two elephantine legs. It was either thick skinned or fat, or perhaps both, a round monstrosity that crept forward with purpose towards the Great Mother. Its head stuck out from the centre of its body, (or else the thing was incredibly hunchbacked,) somewhat like a turtle, though also like a slug. It was wrinkled, it was slimy, and a tongue almost as large as its head lolled out of its gaping maw. As it moved forward it dropped suddenly onto all-fours; the reptilian claws it had as hands miraculously taking its full weight. It was no male hag; it was a beast, a monstrosity that had somehow become part of the hag's reproduction cycle.

Behind it came Etheldredda.

She fell sideways, propped herself against a tree, and then dove out of the way as a flaming branch fell where she had just settled. She landed hard; her metallic mask smashing into her chin as she hit the floor. The horrific visage she had made of that mask, a depiction of the Hagfather's face, could not capture the rippled, undulating ugliness of the true thing. Arm reaching forward, Etheldredda pulled at a root, got one of her knees under herself, and forced herself back to her feet.

She tried to make sense of her senses. Acrid smoke and spilt blood filled her nose. The torturous screams of the furies burning to death, the horrendous shrieks of the darkness-dwelling arachnids witnessing the fury of the light for the first time. Her left arm hung uselessly out of its socket- foliage from above had crashed onto her shoulder. It had set her skirt alight- she had torn it away, but on her left thigh her flesh was ripped over where the fire had made short work of her skin and bitten into the muscle.

She tottered after the Hagfather, stumbling as though drunk. Another hagspawn ran straight past her- weapons abandoned, Etheldredda's kinswoman sought only to escape the nightmare that had descended upon her sinful home. Seeing the weaponless woman made Etheldredda realise that she too was unarmed, though she didn't remember losing her weapon. But she did see a spear sticking out of the Hagfather's rump: she reached out with her right arm, ground her teeth together and tore it from the monster's flesh. It didn't seem to realise. Looking, Etheldredda saw the spear was of elven make. She didn't want to speculate how long it had been lodged in the Hagfather, for it seemed not to bother the quasi-god one bit.

Etheldredda knew this was out of her hands, completely and utterly. She could not face the Hagfather. She could barely walk. But she knew who could- and scanned the flaming battlefield helplessly for her.

There, in a clearing, was Annie.

Somehow the girl was still standing- and more, she was taking out the hags about her with ease. Etheldredda bit her lip against the pain as she ran over to the demigod's side. "Annie," she gasped out, pointing her spear towards the Hagfather. It was clambering over the ruins of the bonfire it had just consumed, and walking towards it was the Great Mother. The Hagfather's tongue split open into four quarters, and something glowed grey inside it.
