and identify your issue as a connection issue? The below sections cover the best ways to solve common connection issues that Mac Users face. Windows users, please go to Common Connection Issues - Windows .

If you find you are playing and you suddenly start lagging, check your computer/mobile phone for any downloads/uploads as well as your other family members. Keep in mind you can lag if too much bandwidth is being used, like Netflix streaming.

Common connection issues are ISP errors which can be solved by waiting, or your anti-virus blocking your connection. If you are getting disconnections or if you are unable to get into the game below I aim to outline the most common resolutions to connection issues.

Keep in mind this is not an exhaustive list, it is just some of the more common solutions players can undertake, if you need further help, please create a thread of your own!

Checking for server outages/Known Issues - Mac


If you are playing the game and you suddenly get kicked out of the game and unable to get back in, checking for a server outage is the best idea before you do any technical troubleshooting.

The best place to check for outage messages is the Support Center as Jagex usually updates that first. Checking
@JagexSupport
on Twitter is also a good way to see if there are any known issues.

You may also check the main RuneScape 3 and OldSchool RuneScape websites for unusually low player counts.

Resetting your modem/router - Mac


Checking if there are problems from your ISP can also be done by checking the lights of your modem/router box. Depending on the make of your modem/router, some lights indicate power, connection, Wifi and a few other things. If you find that there are problems connecting to all parts of the internet, then chances are you have lost connection from the router, either because of DNS issues from your ISP or your router is having problems.

Note: This step needs you to have access to the modem/router. If you are using a shared work/university/school connection, you won't be able to perform these steps.


1) Go to your router/modem and then switch it off from the power socket.

2) Make sure all the lights switch off

3) Leave the router unplugged for 2 minutes then plug it back in.

4) You may need to wait up to 5 minutes for the connection to get restored.

5) If you notice that after 10 minutes you still have an icon of "Limited" internet connection when you try to browse to a website, then it's a good idea to call your ISP.


Calling your ISP should be done in case your entire internet connection is not working, including to other websites. While you wait for them to investigate your internet connection, read below to help you set up an alternative connection in the meantime.

Tracing the Jagex Servers - Mac


If you find that you are unable to get into the game or if you keep getting disconnected from the game then it's a good idea to do a trace to the servers.

Note: If you find you are getting disconnected in a world, please do try other worlds before trying connection troubleshooting.

These traces can be performed no matter what game version you are playing but we can tweak the world traced to make it go to RuneScape 3 or Oldschool.

In OS X Mavericks and later, Network Utility is in /System/Library/CoreServices/Applications.

In OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, and Snow Leopard, Network Utility is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.


RuneScape 3:


1) Launch Network Utility

2) Type tracert world1.runescape.com and press Enter.


Replace 1 with any world you are trying to trace, in case you are experiencing problems on just particular worlds.

OldSchool:


1) Launch Network Utility

2)Type tracert oldschool1.runescape.com and press Enter.

Replace 1 with any world you are trying to trace, in case you are experiencing problems on just particular worlds.

See if you get a large number of connection time-outs which are indicated by a (*) icon. If you get them early on in the trace (this means locally) then it means your having connection issues to the servers. If everything was working regularly and you haven't made any changes, usually this means your ISP may have something to do with it.

A good indication is that you are able to connect to other sites, but RuneScape may not be working correctly. These types of issues only affect some ports which may include the port that RuneScape game is on. If you find that is the case with you, usually ISP's fix these issues in 24-48 hours!

Flushing the DNS - Mac


The DNS (Domain Name System) cache is a temporary database that contains records of all your recent visits to websites. Erasing the DNS cache will remove any invalid records and allow your computer to find the correct address the next time you try connecting to the website or the game.

Flushing the DNS can be helpful if you find that you are unable to get into worlds even when the servers are alright, or if you find that you are getting disconnected from the servers while Jagex or other players aren’t experiencing any problems at all.

Flushing your local DNS will ensure you establish a new connection to the game servers; follow the steps below to do this.

1) Open terminal - Applications > Utilities > Terminal, or Spotlight search 'Terminal'

2) Select your OS from the list below and enter the Terminal command

OS X Yosemite v10.10.4 and El Capitan v10.11
sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder


OS X Yosemite v10.10 to v10.10.3
sudo discoveryutil mdnsflushcache


OS X Mavericks, Mountain Lion, and Lion
sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder


Mac OS X Snow Leopard
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache


3) Save and Close Terminal


You may find that your internet takes some time to restore after the flush. Once the internet has come back, connect into the game servers to see if it has made any difference.

Using an alternative connection - Mac


Note: To avoid heavy charges on your mobile phone plan, the following steps should only be done in case of emergencies (like dying at a boss and losing connection) or for connection testing purposes. Playing for long periods of time on a mobile phone connection can cause big downloads.


Some common issues that an alternative connection can help with are:

1) Internet is down for maintenance

2) Getting around restricted networks such as School/University/Work

3) Checking if connection issues are occurring

4) If your main connection is lagging due to other family members using the connection


The most reliable is a USB tethering connection because you can do it even if your machine doesn't support Wifi, like with most desktops.

Android:


Androids can connect one of 3 ways. Via USB tether, Mobile Wifi hotspot or via Bluetooth. However, connecting a Mac to an android via USB is a little bit tricky. Usually sharing the connection via wireless is the most simple.

iPhone:


Most iPhones can connect one of 3 ways. Via USB tether, Mobile Wifi hotspot or via Bluetooth, however, some carriers disable the use of the USB tether.

Updating Wifi Drivers - Mac


If you find you are having trouble with your Mac Wifi drivers (which is very rare) then the best thing to do is check for a system update.

All the drivers of your Mac machine will be updated with the system update if you need to manually search for a system update or driver please see the link below.

Another thing to do is to try to connect your machine via the ethernet (wired) connection.

Please check firewall message/ Anti Virus - Mac


If you open RuneScape and you get a "Please check your firewall/internet" connection message, that doesn't always mean that your firewall is causing the issue. This message is a bit misleading and it can occur even when the antivirus is not the source of the problem.

You should first:

Check for any server outages and then run a trace .

If you time out through your trace test you can try an alternative connection and see if that works.

If you find the steps above didn't work and you are able to rule out all other errors by being able to connect to other websites using chrome, you can try pausing your anti-virus and see if that helps. If that solves the problem, it is related to your anti-virus. Keep in mind it's never recommended to keep your anti-virus paused for too long and it's not recommended not to have an anti-virus.

There are only 2 ways to solve this problem:

1) Allow RuneScape through your Anti Virus Firewall:
You can do this by going on your anti-virus website and reading the instructions. You can also read this article here .

2) Downloading a different Anti Virus:
Some Antiviruses are more trouble then they are worth, a good list of Jagex recommended Anti viruses can be found here .

I personally recommend AVAST due to it being free and easy to use.
