Boosting the performance of the OSRS/RS3 Java client - Windows

We can add things to the PRM file to make the game run better.

We can also change the compatibility mode of the client which helps some machines detect the client, especially good for laptops that utilize Graphics Switching technology.

1) Copy paste this line into Run by pressing Windows key + R:
%USERPROFILE%/jagexcache/jagexlauncher/oldschool

For RuneScape 3 Java use
%USERPROFILE%/jagexcache/jagexlauncher/runescape

2) Open the oldschool.prm file with Notepad and replace its contents with:

-Djava.class.path=jagexappletviewer.jar
-Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true
-Dcom.jagex.config=http://www.oldschool.runescape.com/jav_config.ws
-Dhttps.protocols=SSLv3
-Xmx512m
-Xms512m
-Xss2m
-XX:+DisableExplicitGC
-XX:+AggressiveOpts
-XX:+UseAdaptiveGCBoundary
-XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=500
-XX:SurvivorRatio=16
-XX:+UseParallelGC
-XX:+UnlockExperimentalVMOptions
-XX:+TieredCompilation
jagexappletviewer

Then press CTRL+S to save the changes and close.

For RS3 keep everything same but subtract "oldschool" from the URL.

-Dcom.jagex.config=http://www.runescape.com/jav_config.ws

3) Right click the RuneScape icon on your Desktop click Properties. Then at the top of the properties box you will see a few tabs tabs Click Compatibility Tab:

- Check the Box that says "Run this program in compatibility with" select Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the drop down box.

- Click the checkbox "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" And hit Apply.

If you make a mistake, revert it to the default prm here

Running RuneScape 3 / OldSchool RuneScape on browser - Windows

Yes you read correctly! It is still possible to run both OSRS and RuneScape 3 in a browser, as long as the browser supports Java and you have a version of Java installed the game will run.

In terms of browser, Internet Explorer (Which is still on all Windows machines - not edge browser) will still run Java and RuneScape without any trouble.

To open the correct Internet Explorer press the Windows Key + R to bring up "run" in there type
iexplore.exe
and this will open up Internet Explorer.

Then make sure you have the latest version of Java or a Java version installed, get it from:
https://www.java.com/en/download/
.

Once you have got a version of Java just type:

http://world2.runescape.com
for RuneScape 3

http://oldschool2.runescape.com
for OSRS.

When promoted to run Java, click "Allow" and if it asks for an update select "Run Now" and check for those updates at a later date (Good for Work Computers with Old Java).

These steps should allow you to still run RuneScape on any machine that has an internet browser and Java.

Note: From Java 8 v20 If you have any problems with not being to run the game, then follow the steps on the below page to help you diagnose issues.

Diagnosing Java Issues for Running RuneScape 3 / OldSchool RuneScape on browser - Windows

If you are still having issues with Java not being able to run, please read the steps below. - Thanks to Pescao6 for providing these.

1) Download Java from
https://www.java.com

https://www.java.com/verify

3) Make sure ActiveX Filtering is off/unchecked from Internet Explorer's Menu (F10) > Tools

4) Add the following exceptions on Internet Explorer's Menu (F10) > Tools > Internet Options > Security > Trusted Sites > Sites:
*.runescape.com
oldschool*.runescape.com

Uncheck the box that says "Require server verification (https) for all sites in this zone" if it's checked.

5) Open your Control Panel and search for Java
On the Java Control Panel > Security > Exception Site List > Edit Site List... > Add:
http://*.runescape.com
http://oldschool*.runescape.com
https://*.runescape.com
https://oldschool*.runescape.com

6) Click ok and close the Java Control Panel

7) Try the steps above and see if anything changed.

Additional Information - For troubleshooting

1) Close Internet Explorer
2) Clear your Java cache
https://www.java.com/en/download/help/plugin_cache.xml
3) Clear your Internet Explorer's Cookies and Temporary Internet Files by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+DEL

Note: Some security programs including 360, Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender, BullGuard, K9 Web Protection, McAfee and Outpost have blocked or interfered with Java-based applications like RuneScape in the past. If you still can't get Java to load on the RuneScape website, you might need to add *.runescape.com
