Making a Restore Point and Perform a System Restore - Windows

Before attempting any graphical driver update/installation/un-installation, create a restore point to protect you in the unlikely event of something going wrong. This allows you to revert any pc settings to the way it was before.

A system restore is something that can be done if in case there is an issue with your Windows or game that you were not getting a few days ago that you haven’t been able to fix. It takes your computer back to a point in time which you can select from a list without affecting your personal files or documents such as Music or Word Documents.

Note: Before performing any troubleshooting do BACKUP any files and folders you may not be willing to lose if something goes wrong!

System restore will un-install any software you have installed since the date that you have selected, revert any windows changes and install any software you may of un-installed. It will let you know all the software that may be changed before you start the process.

1) To create a restore point type "Create a Restore Point" in your Start bar or the Search bar (Windows 8+) and click on the button when you see it.

2) It will open a box that says "System Properties" go to the "System Protection" Tab

3) Hit the "Create" restore point button and this will make a restore point for you.

4) In this "System Properties" box you will also see the button for "System Restore" feel free to click that if you need to perform one.

Deleting the NXT Cache - Windows

Most performance issues can be solved by deleting the NXT cache. Remember that once you delete the cache, you should completely download to 100% (Usually over 5000MB) in size. If you don't know what the cache is, please see Jagex Cache .

To delete your cache go to:
C:\ProgramData\Jagex
and find a folder called "RuneScape". Delete the entire thing.

After that, go to the add/remove programs on your computer and un-install any versions of C++ that you have. When that’s done, get the stand alone installation from the URL below.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

The client is 64bit, so select the x64 one. After downloading and installing that, re-start your machine, try open NXT again and check if this helps solve your issue.

Another thing that may help is launching the client from the .exe file - But only do this if re-downloading the cache didn't help, follow my steps below.

1. Go to the following file path:
C:\Program Files\Jagex\RuneScape Launcher

2. You will see a few icons in there, look for the RuneScape.exe file and then Copy+Paste it onto your desktop.

3. Right click it and click "Properties", go into "Compatibility", check the compatibility mode and try "Windows 8" or "Windows 7". Make sure to tick "Run as Administrator".

You can read more about deleting the cache on this page
here

Deleting the Java Cache - Windows

The Java cache like the NXT cache should be deleted if you are experiencing performance issues, just to rule that out. OldSchool RuneScape only uses Java so this trick will work for both RuneScape 3 Java and OldSchool RuneScape.

The first thing we are going to do is completely delete the Runescape Client from your machine and then reinstall it while fixing any registry errors on the way so:

Download Microsoft FixIt Utility and use it to uninstall the RuneScape Client.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/program_install_and_uninstall/en

Then restart your PC.

Now we're going to fully delete RuneScape from drives so it can redownload all of the files it needs once again. What you need to do is firstly press the Windows Key + R at the same time to bring up the "Run" command, then you need to copy paste each of the following lines one at a time, hitting enter after each one. This will navigate you to the folders so delete the folders if you have them:

%HOMEDRIVE%\.jagex_cache_32
%WINDIR%\.jagex_cache_32
%USERPROFILE%\.jagex_cache_32
%USERPROFILE%\jagexcache\jagexlauncher\bin\.jagex_cache_32
%USERPROFILE%\jagexcache\runescape
%USERPROFILE%\jagexcache\oldschool
%USERPROFILE%\jagexcache1
%USERPROFILE%\jagexcache2
%USERPROFILE%\jagex_cl_oldschool_LIVE*.dat
%USERPROFILE%\jagex_cl_runescape_LIVE*.dat
%USERPROFILE%\jagex_cl_runescape_LIVE_BETA*.dat
%USERPROFILE%\jagexappletviewer.preferences

Restart your PC one more time and RuneScape should be fully removed from your PC.

Then go ahead and reinstall the Runescape 3 Java client from here and the OldSchool client from here . Allow the cache to redownload!

Identifying your Graphics Card - Windows

Before doing a complete re-installation of graphics drivers or if you need to check whether machine supports graphics switching technology then you may be required to check your system for your graphics card manufacturer and model numbers. The best way to find out which graphics card you have would be by opening up the device manager and looking under display adapters.

1) For opening up the Device Manager again press the Windows Key + R to display the "Run" box.

2) In the Run type
devmgmt.msc
and you will see the "Device Manager"

3) Click the "Display Adapters" drop down and you should be able to see all of your graphics cards listed there.

For more information about identifying what hardware you have, please see this support page

Boosting the performance of your laptop - Windows

Most modern-day laptops are capable of being able to play RuneScape with high to ultra FPS depending on the specifications. However, some players have machines in which they are not using to their full potential. If your machine has a dedicated graphics card (Like a Nvidia or a AMD) then you will need to tell the machine to use this card when playing RuneScape, otherwise, it will run the game with the power saving graphics card on the CPU instead!

To check if your machine has a dedicated graphics card you can do this by typing
devmgmt.msc
in the 'run' dialogue box (Press Windows Key + R at the same time).

For more information, please see Identifying your Graphics Card . If you notice that there are 2 GPU's then please follow Dedicated Graphics Card - Nvidia and Dedicated Graphics Card - AMD .

Another thing to check is if your system is suffering from a slow running CPU due to overheating. This term is called thermal underclocking, this can happen due to Intel Turbo Boost/AMD Power core, please see the post solve overheating on Laptops to fix this issue.

In addition please see the information posted on this page here .

Dedicated Graphics Cards (Nvidia) - Windows

1) Firstly you need to open up your Nvidia control Panel, which can be found either by searching for it in your start bar, or right clicking a blank space on your desktop (Not a Icon) then click "Nvidia Control Panel"

2) When you're in the Control Panel look on the left hand side you will see a "3D Settings Tab". Click on the "Manage 3D settings"

3) Once you are in the "Manage 3D settings you will be in the "Global Settings Tab" in these settings you will see a drop down for "Preferred Graphics Processor" in this section drop down the selector and click your Nvidia graphics card and not your CPU then hit apply which will be on the bottom of your screen.

4) Finally look on the left hand side tabs again and click on the "Set PhysX Configuration". Again make sure that's set to your Nvidia graphics card. Before hitting apply and launch the client, have a look at my images below for the steps.

Solving overheating issues - Windows

Intel Turbo Boost/AMD Turbo Core technology is built into a lot of newer CPU's (central processing)

The technology increases your processor's speed to that above what your CPU was built for, similar to "overclocking" (manually making your CPU faster). But the difference is it's done automatically based on temperature.

If you are getting sudden frame drops and the game is stuttering you should go into "Task Manager" and check your CPU speed. If you find that your CPU speed is something like 1.2GHz while running Runescape and your CPU was built for 2.2GHz then your frame rate issues would generally be because of this.

This technology can be switched off to help your processor come back to the normal operating speeds. Some computers are not optimized to run this technology as it's mainly based on the temperature of your computer so if your laptop is old and your Turbo Boost technology is switched on then the machine will forcefully lower your processor speed to achieve "Ideal" performance ranges.

There are a few steps we can take to try help with this:

1) Go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options

2) You will see your battery profiles in there, go to your current battery profile whatever it may be (But make sure it's not power saver) after that be and click the "Change plan settings" button.

3) This should open another page which you will a button that says "Change advanced power settings" click that.

4) Once the new dialog box opens scroll down to "Processor Power Management" click that and then hit the "Minimum Processor State" check the %'s in there and if they are on 100% set them to 99%.

5) The next thing you need to do is check the "Maximum Processor State" and if the values are 100% set them 99%.

6) Hit Apply and Ok
