Hopefully, by now you know how to identify a performance issue and have classed it correctly if you don't please scroll up on this thread to [qfc id=]How to approach a technical problem![/qfc] The below sections aims to cover the best ways to solve common performance issues that Mac Users face . Windows users, please go to [qfc id=]Common Performance Issues - Windows[/qfc].

Mac users can usually solve most problems by clearing their cache, updating their Operating System which in turn updates their drivers or by using the Java Legacy Client
. Some Mac Book Pro's have dedicated graphics cards which can be used to increased performance if they are "forced" on.

I will also list some other things come in handy for Mac users.
Keep in mind this is not an exhaustive list. If you need further help, please create a thread

Deleting the NXT Cache

Deleting the Java RS3/OSRS Cache

Making a Restore Point and Perform a System Restore - Mac

iMacs and Mac Books give you the option to back up things on your device in case things go wrong. Apple calls this process a "Time Machine Backup" and "Time Machine Restore".

You can use Time Machine, the built-in backup feature of your Mac, to automatically back up all of your files, including apps, music, photos, email, documents, and system files. This allows you to restore files from your backup if the original files are ever deleted from your Mac, or if the hard disk (or SSD) in your Mac is erased or replaced.

If you find RuneScape was working correctly until recently, and you suspect an update caused it, you can restore your machine back to the previous state and resolve the issues.

For more information on how to perform a time machine backup, please see the link below.

Deleting the NXT Cache - Mac

Deleting the NXT cache on Mac machines is very simple, it just requires you to drag the RuneScape icon to the trash can and then empty the trash. This should also uninstall the client. You can get a fresh one from the RuneScape downloads page here .

If you don't want to uninstall the game then you can follow the steps below to delete just the cache.

1) Open spotlight search
2) Enter: /Users/*insert your Mac username here*/Jagex
3) Open the 'Jagex' folder
4) Delete the folder called 'RuneScape'

Keep in mind that once the cache has been deleted, you need to allow it to re-download back to 100%. If you need more information about the cache, please see the section about Jagex Cache .

Deleting the Java RS3/OSRS Cache - Mac

To delete the RS3 and OSRS cache, drag the respective RuneScape 3/ OSRS icon to the trash can and then empty the trash, this should also uninstall the client. You can then re-download the clients.

RuneScape 3 Java Mac Client

OldSchool RuneScape Java Mac Client

Note for the Mac Client:

When re-installing the Mac client you need to have a version of Java installed on your system.

If you do not have a suitable version of Java installed, the following error will be presented - 'Unable to load Java Runtime Environment'

To install the Java Runtime Environment, please visit java.com

If you receive an error when installing Java, see this page .

To install the game client:

1) Double click .dmg to make its content available
2) Drag the application from the .dmg window into /Applications to install (may require administrator password)
3) Wait until complete
4) Eject the .dmg (by clicking Eject button)

If you don't want to uninstall the game then you can follow the steps below to delete just the cache.

1) Use spotlight to locate any folders named 'jagexcache'
2) In this folder, open the folder named 'OldSchool' (for OSRS) or 'RuneScape' (for RS3)
3) Find and delete the 'live folder following folder:

Keep in mind that once the cache has been deleted, you need to allow it to re-download back to 100%.

Increasing Laptop your performance - Mac

While Mac machines are not really meant for gaming, there are some things you can do to increase the performance of your machine, especially if it's a Mac book Pro with graphics switching technology.

Most Mac Book Pro's have two graphical units inside them (these are not found) one is a low power Intel processor and the other one will be a high power Nvidia or AMD processor.

Please visit the links below to help switch to the high performance processor.

Please note:
While you should notice a considerable performance increase by using the dedicated GPU all the time, keep in mind that your laptop will get a lot hotter and use far more battery, so make sure it is kept well ventilated and plugged into the power brick. Also keep in mind that it is normal for the fans to spin much faster if using the dedicated GPU during gameplay, hence causing a lot of sound.

Increasing the performance of the Java client - Mac

Note: This is for the Java RuneScape 3/ OldSchool client only!

If you are using the Java client for RuneScape 3 or OldSchool and you are experiencing problems such as the game crashing without any errors or running slowly, or if you just want to give your client a bit of an overall performance boost, we can edit the info.plist file to help with all of this.

1) Open the terminal: Applications>Utilities>Terminal

2) Type in the following command (This command assumes that the official RuneScape client is located in your Applications folder):

/Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /Applications/RuneScape.app/Contents/Info.plist &

This will open the file containing all the Java settings for the client.

3) Scroll to the bottom of the file and you should see something like this:

< key >VMOptions.ppc< / key >
< string >-Xmx256m< / string >
< key >VMOptions.i386
< string -Xmx256m< / string >
< key >VMOptions.x86_64< / key >
< string >-Xmx256m< / string >

4) Locate the '
-Xmx256m
' parameter and replace it with

Xmx512m

5) Save the file and restart the client.

You should notice that performance should have increased. If it didn't then please continue to read other topics in this thread or create a thread of your own!
