Will post more ideas later if I can think of any, the one I have now isn't even entirely original.
Cast sphere: This would basically be a lil' ball of energy that you could attach to a staff. Once you attach it to the staff, you could insert runes for 3,000 casts of a spell(the exact number of casts could be changed, along with a better name). Players may not restock the sphere with additional runes after the initial stocking. Once all of the casts have been used, the sphere runs out of energy and resorts to eating the staff out of desperation in order to not whither to nothingness.
I believe the sphere destroying the staff is a good idea because it would prevent the typical player from pairing it with the already very powerful staff of the dead, while also creating an item sink for the ancient staff, and a gold sink if people chose to use it on god staves. It solves a major magic user issue of committing a large amount of inventory spaces to runes, but it does this at a cost to the player.
