"Players have also asked for the trade to expire a certain amount of time after a player has gone offline - how long do you think is suitable?"

14 days

This looks like a cool idea!!!

Yeah! yep! If anything 14 days would be good if you decide you really have to limit "auction time".

Fives minutes. People shouldn't be able to make a profit while they're offline. Also, as a buyer, I want to be sure that I can communicate with the person I'm buying from. Five minutes is enough time to hop worlds.

The g.e. was originally a Player submitted idea, which was aimed at allowing players to buy and sell their items more efficiently than simply scouring through the trade forums or standing in Falador park coping with the spam.

I envisioned it as an in game access to the already thriving marketplace forums, which would allow me to focus more on playing than opening another browser window to find a trade offer I was interested in and hoping the other player was still on line.

Where the g.e. failed, in my opinion, is that it allowed a single player to purchase a large quantity of items from several hundred players all in a single transaction. Instead of giving players better access to trade opportunities, it gave direct access to the items themselves.

I play another game, Path of Exile, which has a similar marketplace forum, and several chat channels devoted to trading, posting your offer in the forum automatically posts it to the trade channel and can verify that you actually have the items you are selling.

Ingame access to this list of offers is effected by a bulletin board at each banking area, which does not require a separate area on the game map and keeps the public spam to nothing, although the chat traffic in the several devoted channels is equaly as hectic as the current Varrock trading areas.

I personally think the Auction House should act as an agent to help us find trade offers and should not greatly automate our ability to buy or sell items, especially from more than a single trader per transaction.

Perhaps a better vision for the Auction house is to have it as a communication medium which will connect us to the person we are trading with, without the need to change worlds or add them to our friends list. It could then connect us through the existing trading windows which allow us the chance to not be scammed.

I think the problem with buying items while offline is; while consumers are looking for the ability to buy a quantity of items they can use, there develops the short-term holding mentality in which players are able to quickly profit from taking advantage of the "cost of convenience" phenomena.

This in itself is not a bad thing, but 'flipping' should still require the effort to find a seller with a lower price and then to find a buyer with a higher price. To fully automate this aspect of the trade system will quickly make the game about accumulation of wealth and will actually make it more difficult for skillers to profit from their product and to acquire supplies at an affordable price.

The next logical step, as evidenced in rs3, is to evolve into another version of buyscape, albeit with lower graphics. This is something that I think most of us came here to avoid.

In closing, I will reiterate that I think the Auction house should be a communication medium to streamline the mechanics of finding buyers and sellers across worlds, a dedicated spam free transaction window to negotiating price and quantity and completing the trade in a safe manner, and it should not allow any direct access to obtaining items from more than a single person per transaction and especially during periods when neither party is online to negotiate, even if that negotiation is a simple agreement to the posted terms of the offer.

You can farm herbs and make profit while you're offline, shall we change how farming works too?
